    As an educated electrician I just want to say: you don't even realize how ridiculous it is to continuously run a telegraph entirely from the storm's current. Firstly do you know why coil exists? Because one wire doesn't induce much in either direction, but stacking them together is adding them up together. The telegraph wire is, well, a line of two wires as far as I'm aware. Plus if you've ever seen an electrical transformer from any device you'll notice they're tightly packed around a piece of iron. That is to keep the magnetic flow in that small space. That magnetic core will have easily 10,000 times greater magnetic field intensity within them than the surroundings, that's what we have to run our devices. Imagine all that, but instead of being the size of a horseshoe the entire planet is bathed in this field. And add to that the fact that the power in our outlets is specifically made alternating because only a changing magnetic field will induce current. A natural magnetic field will fluctuate, but not very much which means this magnetic field must be incredibly massive. Also if it has the power to induce currents strong enough to run devices in a wire now thing of the steel construction of a building! You touch a random railing and get fried like you touched the phase on a power outlet. Everywhere on the planet. From a process probably hundreds of thousands of times less efficient than what we use in our electronics. The sheer amount of brute strength of that storm is biblical.

    Actually, it's almost guaranteed to happen. The main variable is which side of the earth will be turned toward the sun when it hits. If it hits the US, all long wires will be charged with huge currents. Everything will be destroyed that is plugged into electricity, telephone wires, or tv cables. All the transformers will be destroyed. It takes over a year to get one replaced today. The US doesn't manufacture them any more. We will be back to an 1800s lifestyle immediately. Most of the people living in or near to cities will die quickly of violence, thirst, or starvation. It won't matter if your cellphones still light up, as you won't be recharging them, and there won't be towers to relay the calls. It will all go down. We have had CMEs in that range of power, but they happened to miss the earth. I have studied this extensively. I have also studied nuclear EMPs which are even worse, as they have a high frequency component that will kill all other electronics. I've seen components fry on circuit boards from that type of EMP. The main thing to do in preparation for that happening is to store extra electronics in a Faraday cage or equivalent. That includes a camera or cellphone to document the aftermath, backup hard drives, backup laptops to use the hard drives, and solar panels and associated equipment to supply electricity to the computer equipment. It's not if, but when.

    It's expected. We're coming into a solar maximum in 2025, and the next one will be in the 2030s. Bigger sun storms and with our Earth's magnetic shielding weakening they effect us more. Just like how that X3.8 flare causes the Arora's to be seen across England and Europe, even down in Argentina and Portugal - who have not seen it in 103 years. The Carrington event was X45 , it would take much less to cause much more damage these days. We rely heavily on electronics in our day to day lives. We can hope it won't happen, but eventually it will happen again.

    The likely reason for all the electrical issues in 1859 was that at that time and for many years afterward they didn’t know about the function and importance of grounding in electrical systems. When the energy is generated it has to go somewhere. Present day grounding is probably why these solar events don’t have the catastrophic effects that they did in the past. It’s not luck. It’s an understanding of grounding and having it. In electrical code proper grounding is vital for safety and is still an evolving concept.

    Yeah it not that simple. Grounding could an issue during a solar storm as significant induced current. All energy has to go somewhere, so we get enhanced lightning storms and its even been linked to earthquakes. The only way to save electrical systems is to turn them off in a large solar event. 1859 was at least X5 compared to what we just had, and the following had issue servers, undersea cables, power grids all had outages. We are not prepared for this event and I've worked in high voltage substations and the like they could be damage by events like this.

  • @bite-sizedshorts9635

    @bite-sizedshorts9635

    24 күн бұрын

    @@ruslbicycle6006 A solar EMP would burn up any kind of filter. It's not just a bit of radio noise. It sets up powerful currents in all long wires, destroying all electrical devices connected to the wires. The transformers would be destroyed too, and cannot be replaced within many years, partly because of difficulty and mainly because they aren't made in the US any more. There's already an 18-month waiting period to get just one large transformer replacement. In many locations, the original big transformers were delivered by trains, but the trains are gone from a lot of locations, as well as the tracks even. Those transformers are too large for any trucks, so they'd need to be replaced by multiple smaller ones and figured out by engineers. That's just part of the problems.

    The Carrington phenomenon was due to the long, unfused, unshielded lines and nature of the telegraph equipment itself. We are very well prepared today, as side effect of everything being fused and heavily shielded/hardened against a saturated EM environment. And considering the almost 4 decades of complete intransigence by public health authorities regarding ME/CFS, there are no treatments and the funding for research is paltry for a disease that affects 2-2.5 million Americans (and that was before the pandemic; many more have gotten ill since covid happened). The reality is Diane will likely not recover and she will be fortunate just to have a small amount of improvement at some point.

The big thing is that SKYWAVE (long distance radio communications) and satellite communications will be impacted, with a modicum of a chance that certain power lines in areas where the storm hits particularly hard might have currents induced that could damage the grid, but again that’s pretty unlikely. Solar storms happen all the time lol, it’s just this one is powerful enough to make an impact

    @@Emily-fm7pt “Likely” in this situation really depends on the timeframes we’re talking about. On the average human lifespan, it’s quite uncommon, but over slightly longer periods of time it becomes increasingly more likely. Same with impact events…it’s gonna happen, sooner or later. As far as we know now, we’re in the clear for quite some time on that one, but there will come a day when a massive km+ object is on a collision course with our planet…and earth will be directly hit again by a massive CME. Hopefully, we prepared as best we could for those eventualities 😅

    I hope you realize the Carrington event was an X80. The storm we just had was a combination of X's all at X3 or less. Nevertheless it had the same effect as an X45 in 2003. Why do you think that is?

    @@beinganddoing2123 There’s many factors that influence this, however it’s also important to remember that solar flare≠coronal mass ejection. They’re very often occurring together but not necessarily. Also, keep in mind that the solar flare classification system is logarithmic, like earthquakes (so that should be taken into account when comparing two different events)

    Dear physgirl. Really nice to hear from you. Hope U R recovering well. Also a nice topic with more knowledge (for me) For info. Me myself was just blown away 3 years ago. F-ing C19, Well, after some time in intensiv care I was released home. I said it was version 1.2 of me. Most disturbing: memory loss, after just sitting a while I fall asleep, my balance was let say not good. I had to learn how to sit, stand up (lovely), eat, walk without support. I got it in spring -21. This autumn I unexpectedly met myself, ver 1.1. (A bit boring this one) Still I got easy tired, need a lot of sleep. Strong as child but it GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. Slowly.,It just take so bl-y long time. So don't give up, it take a time, a lot of it. My best part I don't feel angst. It's ok to just sit down in a comfortable chair, staring. Take good care of you. You deserve it (as all of us survivors do)

    We are a bit more prepared now than we were ten years ago! Many new satellites are designed with solar storm protection in mind. It would still be disastrous but global comms, GPS, and some power grids will survive now relatively unharmed. I remember helping a friend who worked with ESA write a proposal for such preparations twenty years or more ago. The close call in 2012 was around when the world's governments started listening to the astronomers and engineers about this problem.
