'We are forgotten': Inside the UK's late life homelessness crisis

Sky News was granted unprecedented access to one of the busiest homeless drop-in centres in London, run by Crisis as new figures reveal that homelessness in later life is up 13% from last year.
The housing crisis will be a major issue for the next government. Should they win the general election, the Labour Party is promising 1.5 million new homes in the next five years, while the Tories are promising 1.6 million new homes.

Trevor seems like a decent human being. He clearly cares about himself, he looks clean and presentable and someone who could be your friend or relative. I live in Cornwall, rent is cheaper here. Also, there is a real shortage of people in the trade for home renovations, maintenance, building. Of course I wouldn't want to force anyone to relocate or do a job that wasn't what the were suitable or capable of doing, but if a man like Trevor was interested in doing contract work in another county where life is cheaper is this a solution? Training, a relocation budget, a set up budget... Then he starts to be a tax payer, worker and just someone back connected with society. I would talk to whomever my MP will be after the general election if this seems like a workable idea.

@@sandrafinbar Ok my bad I misread. Whilst it's better than living on the streets and might work for a few people it's still not really a good long term solution, more like a short term fix. Most counties that have cheaper living do so because there's generally less work and wages are lower, plus that work tends to be limited to just a few industries. On top of that a lot of property agents and landlords are not wiling to take on anyone that doesn't have a full time job or that can't pay a significant amount of rent upfront so any person doing that needs to secure work somewhere before they can even think about relocating. The anwser really is for governments to build affordable homes and stop letting the rich buy up all the land and property in certain areas.

What a lovely society we live in, older people left on the streets in addition to all the rest failed by the UK's housing system. Councils, and the laughable housing system are at the centre of this national disgrace. But in general it's our society's contempt for homeless people. "300,000 houses" were supposed to be built and that didn't happen. Two years ago the government trumpeted a £654 million homelessness funding package, promised for councils to target support at those who need it the most. It was part of a wider £2 billion package of support to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the next 3 years.

We cannot expect that govt should be the one to house healthy and young folks. Did this person go and get a skill or meaningful employment for all the time he wasn't in school? Did he decide to drop out of school and was expecting to depend on the govt for a living? Questions questions and questions.

They should support people to move to other towns and support the whole process to ensure they get proper social support wherever they go to avoid isolation and loneliness and to make it easier for them to integrate.

Where there is a will there is a way. Sadly, there has been no will in the UK to fix the housing crisis. If there had been, thousands of new homes would have been built. They would have fixed the immigration crisis by now also, but instead it has become worse. What is the solution? As unpalatable as this implies, taxes are going to have to be raised as without additional revenue the next UK government will not be able to fund improvements in education, healthcare, defence, infrastructure, housing etc. Is it me or is the UK becoming more like the US?
