We are all so worried! Take control of your finances
Sometimes, when the world seems like a scary place, it can pay to take control of what you can, especially when it comes to your finances.

TODAY, I have a decent roof over my head, food to feed my family, no ones in the hospital, car is running, I have good friends and mostly I have Jesus!!! Gratitude makes what you have enough!

Very true.
The world news leaves me feeling so depressed, sad and anxious that we now limit it to watching the 6pm BBC news only. The radio gets turned down at news time or I leave the room. There is only so much we can cope with knowing about especially, as you say Jane, things over which we have absolutely no control. Our lives are stressful enough! Great video again 👍

The BBC news, that's the worst option possible. They may have spoken truth to the world once but now they are a poisonous bunch of lying toads. They don't get a penny of my money.
The good news is no one has to spend much money on stuff because there is such an excess of stuff. People can get most things second-hand or from thrift shops for very little money. You can find things left out on the street or alley for free. Also it will keep a lot of things out of landfills. It will teach people how to be frugal and resourceful so it's not all bad.

You’re so right!!
This was so comforting to me. It felt like being in fear or panic and having my mom or aunt hug me and talk to me and make me feel like everything’s genuinely going to be okay. Will save this because I know I’ll need that pep talk again. Thank you so much 🙏🏼

I’m so pleased! Thanks for watching.
I made a decision about 4 years ago to stop watching and listening to the news. Worked well. I just catch up on the bits I need to know.
I think everyone is feeling the same anxiety and feeling overloaded with bad news over which we have little or no control. I think we need a good news channel telling us only good news and a common sense party in government to help get us back on track!

I hear what you are saying. I agree with Jane about "taking control where we can" and dealing with things that we have control over and focusing more on that. I want more positive info and news too, but I also want to know what's going on so I can make good decisions... so, that balance of the positive and the negative info for me. Life is not a flat path to walk. Sometimes, it's uphill and downhill along the road. You will get through this.
Truth!!!
Good points and good advice,Jane! I read "The Millionaire Next Door" and some others like it years ago during the recession in the 80's. Took control where we could, lived a comfortable life, and were (and still are) careful with our money and what we have. It worked. We didn't do fancy cruises, but took vacations using only what we could afford. We are now retired and feel that we won't be a burden on anyone, especially on our children. Here in the States, we are also anxious about what's going on in the world and possibly getting a lunatic as a leader, but as you said, we have to stop immersing ourselves in the stories 24/7 and get on with living and dealing with things we can control.
You are a breath of fresh air Jane, with lots of common sense. People in the US are very worried about the elections this year. There is anger and fear that I never noticed in previous years. I was never wealthy, but always had enough to live comfortably. Now as a retiree I have a decent monthly income and some money in the bank. My wants are less, and I can give a bit away to those in need. Living frugally has always been my choice. I would agree that saving is essential, even if its only fifty dollars/pounds a month. That's 600 a year, 6,000 in ten years, 18,000 in thirty years not including interest. Who couldn't use 18,000 of nearly painless money? Start today and you will become more encouraged as the money adds up.
Ideally we should find joy in the simple things. My other half and I went for a lovely walk in the woods earlier at around teatime and it was beautiful lots of lovely trees, bluebells and birds. We stopped by the lake and watched the baby geese. Both of us were very grumpy when we arrived. Within minutes our mood had changed and on the way home he said to me that’s the most relaxed I’ve felt for a long time! ❤

It is an anxious time, definitely, I used to love going into town at the drop of a hat to have a nice lunch and spend money. These days though, I am content to buy second hand and stay at home on days off instead of rushing off to buy stuff I don't really need. My NHS credit union savings are now at a good level and I have a little "nest egg" for emergencies. All thanks to coming across your blog and you tube videos. Keep up the good work and thank you ❤
I put a ban on the news. I don't see the point in stressing myself out and making myself worry over things I cannot change.
We’re all so different in the way we handle money, the media is the number 1 influencer, it used to be adverts in the papers/magazines, then it was the tv and now we have the internet, there’s little wonder people find themselves in debt, I think when pay packets with cash in them were phased out, people lost control of what was theirs and what they believed was theirs, after all the brown envelope contained firstly the household bills, the rest was what we had to live on until the next pay day, and when it was gone that was it, and we managed as best we could. Thankfully I’m not jealous or inclined to follow what I see daily, people driving round in new cars, planning holidays abroad, buying everything under the sun simply because it’s in the shops and everyone else has it, and don’t get me started on school trips, how families are expected to buy school uniforms and pay for expensive school trips abroad at this moment in time really annoys me.

I remember the school trips! Skiing in Europe - how was that anything except divisive? It used to make me cross.
Very good points in this video. I agree - baby steps. For folks that say they don't know how to start on a budget, I encourage them to look at their bank accounts online and look for an option to download all the various entries onto a spreadsheet. Then they can look through these, categorize them and analyze them. It's a good start. I recommend doing the same for all credit cards so you make sure to catch all monthly expenses. I have done this and it was really helpful. Thanks for all your good work.

Really good suggestions!
I agree dont listen to the news or read newspapers etc. Change the subject if everyone around you are talking negatively about anxieties etc. We are conditioned in society to listen to bad news and fear. Be aware and imagine if we had good news all day every day . Listening to the good things and random acts of kindness which goes on every day. There is so much positive if we look for it. We have free will and need to be aware how we can achieve so much and be so grateful for all the blessings we have and often take for granted.

I think it is, but then it makes people feel they have to be that way too....
Thanks for another great dose of common sense. I totally agree about the wealth disparity in society these days. I also find it quite telling that media is trying to influence everyone into looking upon tax cuts as a good thing even though the richest benefit from those and the middling/ poorer end of society lose free access to many services upon which they depend. You can see it happening with the NHS… Maybe we are both anarchist ladies of a certain age😂

Me too! You can’t have good services and not pay tax
Retailers have retrained generations of consumers to buy now, worry about the debt later. We don't teach saving and buying outright over living on tick any more. I don't think your average Joe on the street understands the long term joy of saving gradually for something over paying it off on a credit card for 2 years and living on the edge.

Debt is totally normal now. But then we all have to keep our noses to the grindstone and it's win-win for the men in suits
All sage advice...
The novel by Voltaire called 'Candide",in which the author looks at how to cope and deal with all the troubles in the world. That was 300odd years ago so what we think is puzzling and new is actually perennially forever. The last line, the advice, the way to go, "Cultivate Your Garden". I do.

Well, Jane, I understand and agree with your sentiment that many people are struggling. We do need better help for them. BUT ( and this is a large " BUT"). If you took every single penny of Elon Musk's fortune away from him, and divided it equally amongst every single citizen The U K, you would each get one check for $2850. I believe he can do far more good by continuing to employ people and donate to causes, etc., than each of you getting a one time check for just under $3000. I believe that would barely cover two months' expenses for many people; and for some, it wouldnt cover one month. Capitalism works, and the old saying " I have never worked for a poor man" is spot on. I do love your frugal ways. I hope you make YOUR fortune someday.
Hi Jane, thank you for another thought provoking video. If anyone is looking for a great money UK based book I would highly recommend The Meaningful Money Handbook by Pete Matthew. He also has great KZread and audio podcast channels called Meaningful Money covering everything from the basics of budgeting to retirement planning. He’s a Chartered Financial Planner so he is very knowledgeable but he also explains things very well with practical, actionable wisdom and is a nice guy.
