Yes!!! I've been screaming this to every two mom family I know. Go through a legal adoption!!! My wife adoption our son when he was a baby to protect him. California made it easy for us. We were able to do it the ourselves with $50 and it took two weeks. It was the best money ever spent. Take care of your LEGAL business.

I'm so glad that you took these legal steps. My niece lost the love of her life to a heart attack. They were married with a daughter but my niece was not the biological mother. Therefore, her wife's mother, the child's grandmother, took the daughter that they had been parenting together and would not allow visitations between my niece and the child. They didn't know that a legal adoption was extremely NECESSARY to avoid this outcome. All of this caused even greater devastation when they were already grieving the loss of their wife and mother. It was completely heartbreaking. I'm so glad that your family is covered. May God continue to bless you and your children forevermore. 🙏🏼

I find this an interesting question especially with the intersection of being Black and Queer. Shopping Black is HUGE for us, but let’s not ignore the homophobia in the Black community. As for step parent adoption for a Black two mom family, it was upmost importance to work with someone who was (1) referred and (2) LOT of experience with LGBT+ family laws. Barbara is that and more. If you are discussing keeping money in the Black community, I ask that you keep your money in a Black owned bank, purchase your car/home from a Black bank, invest in Black companies, shop from Black farmers and grocery stores. Due to systematic racism, keeping the Black dollar in our community is hard but not impossible. For my family, it’s an added layer bc the company would have to be Black owned and pro LGBT. I provided a lot of resources on my IG (Millla.Jay) to shop Black in the ways mentioned above. I think in the instance, focusing on JUST race can be shortsighted as this is an intersection of race/sexual orientation. Thanks for your question but I think it’s bigger than us making a choice and more so systematic. - Jamilla
