One of the hardest parts of having pets, is the sudden injuries/sicknesses. I cried with you, Esme, the fear of losing your animal, who is basically like a child to you, is horrible. I'm glad that Joey is feeling better already though, he's so lucky to have you. ❤ Big hugs to you and Joey. 💕

I've had to leave one of my dogs overnight at the vet for observations (and at that time I had a gut instinct that he was dying) and I can attest how truly traumatizing it is to leave an animal behind, no matter how well cared for they are. I'm glad Joey is alright. And while he is healing, I hope you take care of yourself too, Esme. This kind of situation is quite literally PTSD-inducing, so please take care of your mental health, and seek therapy if you feel this is necessary. Never underestimate how a pets injury can effect your mental state.

Ah yes, this video brought back memories of finding out my small/med dog had been attacked by a neighbor’s large dog. He had long shaggy hair at the time thanks to quarantine in 2020, so it wasn’t until he got released from the vet that I could see how bad his injuries were. Fortunately he made it out in one piece and healed just fine. And aside from the first few days home, I think he genuinely enjoyed his recovery period- he got so much love & attention from all the neighbors while he was wearing the cute little tshirts I made for him to keep his open wounds clean & his bare skin out of the sun

Our one horse got his leg stuck in the wall of the barn and cut it up really badly, the vet wouldnt come out because it was a sunday even though it was an emergency call. He was on stall rest for a while but it healed he still does have a scar but we learned to ride on him after the accident happened. I was the first to see him down in the stall i ran out and yelled at my mom because i thought he was colicing but no he had slipped his leg through the wall of the barn and cut it all up. It happened halloween and we rode him in January to help the process heal. You are so lucky esme with vets so great. Where i live the large animal vet wont even come out. Just remember lots of treats and hugs are the best healer❤️

The only tip I have is to keep an extra eye open for colic. When a big tendon in my pony's back leg broke he had to be box rested for many months and it resulted in severe colic so he was hospitalized for several days the vet didn't know if he would make it. I felt like I was living a nightmare, so I understand how you feel. Fingers crossed that everything goes well with Joey ❤

I’m so glad that Joey is okay and I hope that he makes a full recovery. A horse at my barn had a similar accident out in the field and has been on stall rest for about 5 weeks now and we think that the cut got into his tendon. The vet said that he is going to be on stall rest for another 8 weeks because His left back leg is very swollen and he may never be able to ride again and we might have to put him down. I’m so happy that Joey is okay though and I hope that he recovers fully. Much love! ❤

tips for box rest, give them a rolling feeder ball, with hay or treats (or a mix of both) in, drilling holes in carrots, parsnips, swedes, apples etc, your idea of the snaffle mats are really good but carrot put in a food processor and a bit of water would be a nice not too sugary snack, the swinging is good as it doesn’t let them get it all at once and is more of a challenge, for our ponies who are difficult travelers, we hang carrots up for them to distract from the movement of the box, i cannot tell you how close to tears i got, i’m not one to cry but this one really got me esme, wishing so much for joeys speedy recovery, love you and the equines so much!! heads up to your parents for their quick thinking!! love you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I totally understand how you feel Esme. Seeing your heart horse go through an injury, fatal or not is so much harder than seeing other horses get injured. I’ve had a couple horrible injuries happen at my barn but it was always the scariest when something happens to my heart horse. The most recent was when he had a sore leg and was constantly falling onto his knees, tripping, and just wobbling around when i was riding and when I was lunging. I stressed about it so much but he ended up being fine after he had his hooves trimmed and his sore leg went away fairly quickly. Seeing you happy in the last part really warmed my heart and I’m so happy Joey is starting to recover and I hope he makes a full recovery. Thank you Esme for all you do for your horses (and donkeys.) it is truly inspiring how you are able to handle a situation like this ❤

I had a horse that was in and out of box rest for 8 months, and my best advice is to enjoy the little things, be in the moment and If that moment happens to be balling ur eyes out while giving joey cuddles then that's 100% OK. I know how scary something like this is. Just know that so many people are here to support you, and I wish joey the bestest and most speediest recovery ❤️

Sending full recovery prayers. I cried when I heard about Joey. Glad he will be well and better. I had a bit of a freak out moment when my mare decided to cut her forehead, all the vet said to me was cut skin and apply medicine needing no stitches. Am glad she didn't make her head worse. You got this Esme & Joey! Love you and have a wonderful holidays 🥰☺️.

This really hit home for me, similar thing happened 3 months ago and my horse is only just coming back into to work. It really does make you want to protect them more.Apart from it was a kick so we did know what happened.we didn’t know what would happen to her or if I would be able to ride again. She couldn’t even step forward at one point it was awful and the wound was in a really difficult area on the leg to heal as a big flap of skin would lift when she lifts her leg…but the body does amazing things and if my horse can come back from that your joey can! have faith xx

This is the 1st video I've seen of yours, but had to see if Joey was ok. How heartbreaking to have to go through that, and worry about 1 of your babies. I am so glad he is out of the woods and I hope he continues to heal well. He's a beautiful boy and seems to be such a jolly and playful and kind and friendly soul 🥰 I sadly don't have horses (though I've always loved them) ... I have dogs. I can relate to seeing them as your children. So it is simply awful when they get hurt or become ill. Glad Joey is being spoilt and that he has Casper and Mickey keeping him company. It's clear you think the world of your horses and take exceptional care of them. Sending healing thoughts and wishes for Joey. Hope you and the horses and the rest of the family have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year 💝

I’m so sorry about what happened, Esme. Watching our beloved equines suffer is one of the most awful things… 6 months ago we had to put two of our horses down on the same day, one, Amor, was really old so we got the vet out so we could consult him regarding her, then we had him to look at our other horse, Tiara, because she had been pretty lethargic recently. My world stopped when he told us that she had heart failure and was slipping into a coma. Nothing could prepare me for losing my two friends like that, for so many years they were my world. I’m not trying to look for sympathy here… sometimes sharing our stories help, although mine is pretty bleak there is hope in it; I’m still riding and carrying on because I’m a better person for knowing Amor and Tiara. I’ll be praying for you and Joey and a full recovery and that your bond will be stronger then ever ❤

I'm so sorry you had to go through this Esme! I'm very glad Joey is okay. No matter what, you always take such good care of your horses. Stay strong! Joey will get better. Once he is healthier and feeling better, you could even try a little bit of simple liberty with him! It might help during rehab. But for now, just keep giving him lots of love! For box rest, you could try giving him different fruits and veggies to try or mix some into his feed for enrichment. I hope that helps!

I’m so sorry you and Joey are having to go through this. He couldn’t be in better hands for his recovery 🥰 When my mare was on stall rest for a while, I did a lot of little games with her that would engage her mind like teaching her to pick things up, pass things to me, “look away” when I ask, smile, pick a specific object out of group, etc. I also started learning the masterplan method techniques so I could work on her body a little bit to help her be as comfortable as possible. I hope some of that helps! Sending love to you guys ❤
