There's a huge problem with doing that friend. WD40 breaks down over time, sort of like drying out. Instead of it all disappearing like water when it evaporates, WD40 becomes gooey. It will become slightly sticky, and give it time all dust and dirt will cling to it. That's why using it on things like door hinges that are outside doesn't fix them for very long. Try using an engine degreaser instead. Engine degreasers will break down the WD40 you've used and will break down built up dirt and grime. It's not that much more than a can of WD40 as that...and has way better results. Or buy a simple bottle of granatize's degreaser, super safe on lots of stuff works wonders on almost anything.

WD40 does attack various greases, but it's not a cleaner....it's a lube. It's designed to remove old aged lubricant, and remove what has been caught in it. Not clean an engine bay.....what he did can be accomplished with simple green, and it actually renders awesome results. Plus I can clean my house with it.

Excellent explanation. I would've never known that. But still I wouldn't use it to clean anything unless I literally HAD to clean something and had nothing else lol.

Ask 10 people about WD40 and you'll get 10 different opinions. It doesn't "attack" or destroy anything. That's utter nonsense. It explicitly says that on their home page and probably on the bottle, too. If you can't trust that then don't even breath on your car because the moist might cause metals to rust. WD40 can be used on any surface. People need to start learning how to read and stop listening to fairytales or their own, home made conclusions. If you think or believe otherwise, then show solid proof how WD40 has EVER destroyed rubber, plastic or metal surfaces. As long as common sense is applied it can indeed be used everywhere except in your mouth perhaps. The same goes for silicone spray. Iuse it everywhere and now that winter is 3 or so months away, I'll start using WD40 as well.

Opinions are like 455holes, everyone has one. Then there is science. It is fact that materials and solvents are not universally compatible. There are charts to look up such things. The makers themselves state specifically not to use it on polycarbonate or clear polystyrene, and suspiciously omit the problem with erosion of the protective silicone oil film on modern rubber. In other words their criteria for "safe" cannot be a comparison of the long term effects, which are important in an (expensive) automotive environment. The same does NOT go for silicone spray, it is protective rather than detrimental to most rubbers and plastics. There is a reason both exist as lubricants for different situations. Duh. Except WD-40 isn't even a proper lubricant, so it's silly to try to equate the two. Not all things that come in a spray can are magically equal. Can't believe I even had to write that, lol. WD-40 is best for some things and not so great for others.

putting an oily product all over the engine is never ever a good move, could cause the drive belt to slip off resulting in major engine damage
