He was already hugely successful at this point, commanding very large salaries for major roles. You can sense that he felt he could really pick and choose his projects, and also explore all aspects of film making. He was very wise with his money. Not bad for as former life guard from Oakland... He was smart to model his directing technique on Don Siegel's. Siegel made crisp films, under budget and under schedule for the most part. He could take a low budget film like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and create a masterpiece.

I'd guess this is from 1972 based on him mentioning his recent first movie as director (Play Misty for Me) released in '71. Very cool, thanks for posting.
