The period between May 1997 and late 2002 was the worst period in the station’s history. This was as a result of the implementation of a hybrid tabloid/traditional news format by then news director Bill Carey a year after he initiated mass layoffs at the station in an attempt to increase viewership for its news programs following a ratings decline during the early 1990s that culminated in a last place finish in 1995. The format change produced a ratings increase for its first three years but the increase was smaller than expected, prompting his successor Joel Cheatwood to implement additional tabloid elements into the news product, including a fully tabloid 11 pm news program. The station’s ratings plummeted as a result of this, causing the format to be discontinued in late 2002. It would not be until the late 2000s that the station would fully recover from this…

That mass firing in 1996 became known rather infamously as "The Massacre" and a similar situation would occur at sister O&O KYW-TV in Philly. In 2015 lead anchor Chris May, then-Chief Meteorologist Kathy Orr and Sports Director Beasley Reese were all summarily fired by the station. The thing is Reese and May were supposed to go on the air THREE HOURS before they were fired while Orr was on vacation when she was informed of her firing. Then in 2020 right as the pandemic struck 12 more people were laid off from the station.

This itself is an update of TheOpensGuy's WCBS-TV compilation. And eventually, you'll get to its sister stations in Denver & the Twin Cities.
