I admire what you have done to maintain your dragon fruit garden during the winter months...I realized then that I am very blessed... I am from the Philippines . I have lots of sun, high temperature, and lots of small dragon fruit plants that needed to be transferred to a farm.. I have not started the farm yet and looking at your difficulty, I decided to pursue my dragon fruit farm .. I am not to face the problems you are facing therefore I have NO REASON not to pursue that plan... Thank you ...

I'm going to use this exact method since I live in North Texas. It rarely stays below 35° for more than 48 hours but I know too much cold will kill dragon fruits. I have about 12 cuttings and I'm planning on doing some grafting soon. They will all be outdoor/indoor plants until we get the greenhouse up. Thanks for the video!

Hey there found your channel after being gifted a couple dragon fruit cuttings. Keep telling my wife that you sounded like you from the area. And sure enough your from just up the road. looks awesome Ty! i've used some cheap electric radiator type heaters that have their own built in temperature control and i would say it works well enough for me "next door" in metairie. as you know, last year was exceptionally cold around here. i also had some remote temperature sensors to monitor the temperature with and they would turn on a fan to help move the air inside the hoophouse when the temp starts to rise in the morning hours. for me, my setup was constrained and the south end would heat up before the north end and the fan helped to even the temperature out...

What size are your hoop house(s) and the wattage of your radiator heater? They do work well, I found I need at least 3KW per hoop house and this alone was near/over 20AMPS. What size fan and do you have it blowing low for cold air or high for hot air circulation? BTW, this is a good idea. I just came back from Napa and noticed the had fans over the vineyards. They turn them on when the temperature is in danger of damaging the vines. I look forward to your response.

@@Spicyexotics my hoop house is small compared to yours Ty. only 5x25 along the east side of my house. and i had two of those heaters inside to maintain the temp above 40. they were 120V 15000W oil filled radiator type heaters. IDK if they are still available? Model HO-0250H. like you said in the video, when the sun hits the hoop house the temp goes up rapidly. so i was using the fan to circulate that heat and help reduce the spike in the front. and if the temps got too high i'd open the back door and the fan helped to move in the cooler air from outside.

We're in 9B also, but in central Florida. We get frosts here too but apparently not as bad as you. Winter a year ago was like summer but I wish I had had a few hoop houses this past winter; I lost about half of my plants. We wrap each trellis with a wire and plastic windbreaker every year but this year it got cold enough to freeze the tops. I see you grow in pots. Do you move/space them out more in the summer?

Hi, Thanks for sharing. I feel I might have a few ideas for you to consider, but please know I am just a home gardener . I wonder if plants need darkness to rest at different stages of the day/seasons. Also maybe try infrared lights (sauna like) which actually contribute to the plant health. Different light spectrums have been studied to help humans and plants as well. Next, radiant floor heating (like they use in homes, )and used with something on top (wood, connecting tiles, heavy duty industrial mat etc) to hold the heat. Also some type of steam humidifier or misters (with foliar feed)to keep the plants aerial roots happy. That’s all, don’t know if you have updated your systems over the 4yrs or not. Thanks for the feedback, however we have tried all that you mention with results, good or bad. Not sure what area your growing, however things like humidity does not apply to us as we are 100% most of the year. If we were to add more humidity, it will create another problem. Also, as you mention a updated system, this is an old setup and everything has been replaced with new technology and larger greenhouses for our Dragons and we make adjustments each year. You can check us out on FB or IG to see the changes and hope to get some videos up soon. In summary, depending on your growing location, information may not apply as well as the same solution in other growing areas.

Hi Ty, Thank you for the video. You really invested a lot into this greenhouse. I was searching to get one and saw a lot of not too good reviews on this type of green mesh enforced covers. They said after about a year, the plastic start to fall off like snow flakes. Did this happen to your greenhouse too? and how long this plastic cover can last?

We use the light for heat, not production. When temperatures drop below 45 degrees F, the plants go dormant. Adding light during this period would be a waste.

i believe dragon fruit can survive on zone 9b.i live in zone 9b houston texas it's a cactus so it will tolerate winter. just wrap them when it gets under 32.

If I were to take my dragonfruit inside where it's warm and give it plenty of light in the winter, do you think it would keep growing, or would it probably still go dormant?

Some grow but in our experience, it's undesirable growth. If any new growth appears to be thin or small, I would remove it.

Great video and very interesting, in dormancy does the plants need the lights and warm also watering?

The lights are used for heat. We water when the plants dry out. This is usually every two months in the winter. Our winters are usually 3 months so we water once.

Hi Ty, Thanks for the video ways to care for your Dragon Fruit plants during the winter months. So you remove the cover in summer time for exposing them to the sun? I thought DF plants needed full sun? Thanks for the info

We use the larger string lights and wrap our tropical trees that are not in the green house. It can give you a few degrees of warmth and this can assist when temps drop for short periods of time.

Search Amazon 12X26 greenhouse and yes the cover is one piece. It's convenient but not easy. A two to three person job for sure.

@@billmaghielse8324 Delta canopy. They have improved the product over the years, like adding stainless steel wing nuts and slightly larger covers so it not so tight. I had a greenhouse blow away last year and damaged most of the pipes. The anchor system that comes with the houses are not nearly strong enough. You can use many other things to anchor down the greenhouse. We to get high winds and always in danger of hurricanes. Overall it's a good product and I will continue to purchase more.

I use 100% composted cow manure. Fresh cow manure will burn the plant. I top dress in the spring with fresh stuff. I do not use any other fertilizers or micronutrients.

They are kits. I replaced them every 3 years. It's dual-layered plastic with a green fiber mesh in between

I have a question. When you say purple haze is not self fertile, does that mean it will not set fruit without another variety or does it just mean I need to hand pollinate the flower with the same pollen?

You need pollen from another variety. Not just any other pollen will work. Closely related varieties will not work.

Today our Greenhouses are twice the size. We follow the manufacture anchor points for the greenhouse design and use 16" to 20" anchors. We monitor the weather daily and when a windy day is expected, we close up the greenhouse.

How much does the polytunnel raise the minimum daily temperature without a heater? How quickly does it lose the heat it absorbed during the day?

During the day, a clear day in the winter with the sun out, inside temperatures can reach 120 F, so venting and cooling is a must. Night time temps drop of quickly, about 3 hours after sunset. During this time its about 2 to 5 degrees different.

What's the low temperature setting to turn on the light?

auto = 40, but monitor your local weather on when temperatures drop. You can get away with it being lower.

Cool. Do you have led and solar type alternate for this setup of bulbs?

No we do not. Solar would be massive to support the power draw and LEDs do not put out any heat.

We use incandescent bulbs for a heat source, not for light. LEDs do not produce much if any heat.

Have you changed anything over 4yrs ?? Have you looked into ceramic metal halide bulbs ? Use hi temp gasket maker on the porcelain to dish connection to prevent water dripping down to bulb 😉

Yes, everything is replaced. We now use electric oil heaters. Two per Greenhouse and our greenhouse is now twice the size.

BTW, when we had this setup, we tried several types of bulbs. Energy cost and bulb price had alot to do with what we choose at the time. 60 lamps going at once was a huge energy draw. Typically half of the bulbs would fail during the season so you can figure on a bulb cost.

I would say the gulf coast, as we are in Louisiana and works for us. It will have more challenges in colder locations, but making adjustments to the setup could overcome those challenges. Its a good cost affective solution to winterizing.

18 to 20 in the summer and 26 in the winter. You can squeeze more, but we prefer comfort over additional storage. That's 20x40, not 50 feet.

Hi friend ...there is a guy doing r&d along with 12 acre farming ..he is doing all kinds of experiments with lights he eliminated heat problem by working with a china company by manufacturing a customized led bulb ..it costs 15$.. including shipping etc..he is planning to setup a plant and reduce the cost to 4$ ..mass production makes it 4$ . A Pitaya é a mesma coisa, a maioria das híbridas surgem assim, se quer tem nome, mas com o tempo você vai entender, quando comecei a quase 10 anos também pensava como você, eu mesmo não vou catalogar as minhas, vou dar um nome e pronto, se a pessoa quiser a planta vai ter, pode ser que seja com brix mais elevado ou não, só vou saber quando produzir! Tenho várias plantas aqui que não tenho nem ideia que variedade é, mas produzem belas frutas

Just saw the following warning for today: HARD FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 8 AM CST SUNDAY... * WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 23 expected. * WHERE...Portions of central, south central, southwest and west central Louisiana. * WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to 8 AM CST Sunday. * IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

That's correct, we experience cold down to 21 degrees on 1/23 and freezing temperatures over 12 hours

@@Spicyexotics wow I really hope the plants are fine! In Holland we normaly have freezing winters but the last few winters are allmost without frost. Strange it looks like things are shifting and I wont be needing to heat my greenhouse in the future

@@samderksen8499 The greenhouses had an average temperature of 50 degrees this weekend, so the plants are doing just fine at the moment. Next month is our coldest month historically, so we have more winter to deal with.
