September 5th, 1980 This was the nite they dedicated the Buddy Holly Statue, and inducted Waylon into the West Texas Walk of Fame. In advance of the ceremony, they asked Waylon to perform, he politely declined, saying “this nite is about Buddy, I don’t want to distract from his being honored.” Thus the reason he didn’t have a familiar Fender w/ him. After a great deal of prodding and coaxing, he finally gave in did a song or two…using an uncovered Tele. There’s a photo of him taken straight-on, which very clearly shows where his mind was… I’ll dig it out.

I love how he shouts out Buddy at the very end. All those of 3 guys were his boys.

I saw a show with Tony Joe White, The Crickets, and headliner Waylon a few months after this in Texarkana. Waylon came toward the end of the Crickets set and joined in a few songs, then J.I. and Waylon stayed as the other Crickets left, to segue into the headlining set. J.I. Allison was Waylon's drummer at the time.

Another great one! I've only seen segments but not ever so much of this! These guys have such a magic when they play together, the energy is alive and well. As another poster said, the curiosity here is 'that' Telecaster, and where does it fit into the picture. We know he had many different leather covered versions over the years, but what's the story on this blonde/black pickguard guitar? One thing is certain though, it doesn't matter which guitar Waylon plays, it always sounds like Waylon. Pedals, amps are a small piece to the puzzle to the Waylon sound.

I didn't realize until today that the photo was from the show in the video. I have the same question about the Tele. I know nothing about that guitar, but taking a wild guess, if there were ever a time that Waylon were going to downplay his signature look with the leather cover, it would be during a tribute to Buddy as this show was.

Maybe i am just seeing things but looking at a couple of different pictures of Buddy on Feb 2, 1959 at the Surf if you flipped Strat the colors around on Waylon's Tele it would look just like Buddy's Strat
