so it's time for a teast test between two different kind of all day breakfast meals.

If you wanted to save money buying the tinned version, just take a very small tub with a knob of butter and the same amount of ketchup. Once the meal is hot, mix the butter in and the ketchup and it gives the taste of the bean juice a creamy and rich flavour for no extra price.

Agreed.works a treat every time, even for my jaded palate Works well even without the butter.and the pepper. Long ago realised that the premium brands, especially Heinz are an outrageous rip-off. Branston taste good but although cheaper than Heinz, still over-priced for my budget. I realise that baked beans are only one item on the shopping list, but applying this philosophy to all my menu options offsets a small part of the high cost of travel in these economically sketchy times. Happy trekking everyone, sray safe, and recognise when it's time to bail or take the less difficult option 'coz the trail will still be there for another go when your skill, gear levels, and weather match anything the trail demands.

The tinned one is meant to be heated in a saucepan. That would boil off some of the juice and concentrate the flavour.

As said by at least one other comment, tin with brown sause added helps alot. Ive also got a tin of heniz beans. Added that to the bag and the extra bits from the ADB tin. I also do the curry in a tin with some microwave rice mixed in. Works perfectly. I also preslice bacon grill in my bags.

I prefer the tinned all day or the full monty breakfast. I found the wayfarer was stodgy and bland, but everyone has a different palette of taste. I'm in receipt of a low income and do a lot of batch cooking working out roughly £1 or £1.50 a meal, so I'll look into buying some of those bags for when I go Stealth/tarp/wildcamping. I was thinking of purchasing a dehydration kit but they take a long time to dehydrate wet meals.

I totally understand the balance between calorific value vs taste vs cost, but all in all, I much prefer the tinned ADB every time. Strangely I keep mine in the tin and just dip the opened tin into boiling water, stir occasionally and it works a treat, crush down the empty tin and take it back home for disposal. Nearly two tins for the price of one wayfayrer, does the job for me.

I'm one of those who said that tinned stuff is cheaper but I was talking about Asda basics bangers & beans at 58p for 405g 😂😅 Based on you saying that the omlette & tiny sausages were tasteless and if I using a reseal bag I would go for the better quality meat in the all day breakfast in the tin and splash a bit of brown sauce in with it when bagging it up. For me, the meat is far more important than the beans and it looks like you get far more meat in the tin than the pouch and the whole meal is also 33% bigger.

Mylar bags are great,Dan. You can have a larger choice of varieties of food, either cook it yourself first, or like you, from a can. So much money to be saved. Also, if you make a load up in one go, you can freeze a load, and have them instantly, for an ‘emergency camp out’. ( Try and squeeze all the air out, before you seal them up😉). All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧⛺️

I think make your own.. .. a tin of hot dogs and cut them up to your own size. Divvy up a tin of beans between how many portion bags you want. ..cook some bacon ( cool then slice up into small pieces.)..you can add a few potatoes cut into small servings from a tin ( which as a breakfast can replace sortee potatoes… it needs putting into bags that can freeze though if making a larger amount and save for another day..unless using the same day…(defrost before re-heating..)

Advantage of the tinned one is that you can add stuff to it when you put it in the bag, sauce, curry extra egg. Disadvantage is it won't keep too long once out of tin, wouldn't risk more than a day myself.

As for "calories per tin / packet" the tinned version wins hands down (442kcal vs 381kcal). So "price wise" you get 442kcal for £2.30 or 381kcal for £4.50. This equals 192kcal per £1.00 spent (tinned) or 84kcal per £1.00 spent (packet). Personally I love the "Hunger Breaks" brand and like you Dan, I remember when they were much cheaper. You can keep tinned foods for ages and putting them in a 50p bag saves just a little weight, but not a lot. When you are only doing an over-nighter or a 2-3 day trip the extra cost of the bag seems inapproriate to the extra weight, plus you may be adding an extra issue for waste management. My personal preference for a 2-3 day trip is just four basic types of things. 2 tins of meat (spam / corned beef and/or chicken), 3 tins of veg (carrots / peas etc) - drained into sealed containers, some dried pasta and/or potato powder (smash-type) and some cheese (grated or block -depending on the lenght of the trip). Add all the usual dried items such as coffee/ sugar/ milk powder/ gravy granules/ salt/ pepper/ some herbs and spices/ oxo cubes (less than 300 grams) and I am good for that short trip. Plus I allow for breakfast / supper items such as a bag of porridge or breakfast bars and hot-chocolate drinks. The added bonus is that nothing has to be "cooked" (The dried pasta has to be boiled but I re-use the water), as it is all ready to be eaten when re-heated or boiled. For longer trips I just try to arrange to get to a supermarket / shop to resupply the basics (tinned meat/veg, pasta/smash and cheese), before I run out. Then I am good for another few days. The good thing about this system is that you can easily find shops along the way to sell you the basics that you need and if you get a bonus like the "Hunger Breaks" breakfast it will not be out of place with your regular food items / weight (in your bag). I have never been a big advocate for packet-hiker meals. They are expensive and lead to a dependence on so-called quick meals when it is just as easy to produce your own for a 1/3 of the cost but with just a little extra weight. They can save weight if you are travelling in an area which has a plentyfull water source, but can be more troublesome when you don't have that access to water. Plus they are often less calorific compared to other options. Having a bag of peanuts / raisins / dried banana slices will give you a better long term energy kick than many other items. I know I have talked about "longer" hiking trips than you normally do Dan and although I really love the short trek videos you produce (seriously I do enjoy them all - honestly) I would love to see how you would prepare for a longer journey of maybe 3 - 5 days. So here is my challenge to you: Show us you preparation for a 3-4 day hike with no shop-stops. Make it a round-trip from your house if you like, but stay out for 3-4 days with what you have in your bag (Yes you can collect water from taps / houses and streams) you can forage for food (no dumpster-diving behind McDonalds or ALDI --- LOL) and you have to carry everything you need for those 3-4 days (except water). Can you do it? I think you will easily do it and the video/videos will be brilliant. Good luck.

With these Mylar type bags, they're great for a proper stealth camp coupled with Flamesless Ration Heaters, FRH, no smoke, no flames, no smell. You do need to wait around 12-15minutes though, but great for when setting up camp. The tinned brekky would be my choice, but the wayfayers are a designed meal, calorific count, nutrition values etc. I've even done my own full brekky, with an egg in Mylars. Great bit of kit, especially if you have special dietary requirements.

My guess is the wayfarer will taste better but it won't taste good enough to justify the price difference between the two

Never tried the pouch, but have had the tin. The tin is ok if you don't have multiple pans. Great in a mess tin.

What about taste testing different tins of all day breakfasts to see if any come close to the flavours of the wayfarer one.

Put a little know of salted butter in before cooking thickens the sauce and adds flavour

I would use the tin, but add some tomato puree to increase tomato flavour

Can you do a video on your thoughts on the Khyam self erect tent, basically a pop up tent.
