Brilliant. I was helmsman and sailed across the channel in a wayfarer when I was 15/16 years old. Felt so brave, slept the night then sailed back to Dover. All 3 of us were 16 years old or less. NOTHING to the trip these guys did, so jealous. Wayfarers are so Ace.

Probably the best sailing video I've seen on KZread. The combination of great sailing, wonderful travel log plus Steve's excellent commentary made for a enjoyable Sunday morning.

What a fantastic experience, brilliantly documented and related. Completely envious. Oh well, back to work...

What a great adventure, I don’t think I would have the guts to do what this chap did. I loved the whole video , very inspiring and lots of courage and he met some amazing people from around the world 🌍 thank you for sharing this with us so much appreciated , happy sailing .

I know Steve from the old days in Bitez -Bodrum ;Turkey .And I met him again when he was return to Bitez from Nile river ,and building his Felluca in Bodrum .He was a great guy.

Absolutely loved this, just bought and restored a wayfarer for my family to learn to sail in. Feel absolutely inspired.

Very interesting viewing. Professionally done too. You must have been the orginal youtuber. A real spirt of adventure and what amazing people you met and sailing experience you gained. Frank Dye would be proud that the wayfarer had sailed again another epic voyage. So wonderful Steve could relive it with so much detail a very lucky sailor

This is a life well lived.

Brilliant. I and my family were on a Sovereign Sailing flotilla from Yalikavak in 1992 led by Danny Duncan and Jo. We had a barbecue near Bitez and I vividly remember Steve’s story of getting out of the Nile, being abandoned by the fishing boat. I have retold it many times over the years without knowing who it was. Great to see the movies!

I had a wonderful holiday with Falcon Sailing, cruising in Wayfarers from Paxos. It must have been just before all this took place. I thought at the time the staff were amazing but I had no idea just how amazing until I watched this.

Truly amazing what you accomplished sailing in a 16' dinghy. It gives me much more confidence in my 36 year old CL sixteen. I need to mount some oarlocks and set it up for rowing as the backup motive force.

I gutted and rebuilt an Aquarius 21 to cross the oceans. I think you would have loved her for your voyage. You can see her on my KZread page. I am torn between my Freya 39 and my Aquarius. Love small boats but also like my comforts in older age.

Like you, I spent much of my childhood in small boats, including wayfarers. I made seafaring my career, I wish I had followed your route instead. I was master for much of the time, but small boats were always my first love.

Gareth, small boat cruising and camping is great fun. Many coasts don't have safe places for keel yachts etc but a Wayfarer can get into any fishing port no matter what the depth of water.

I'm setting up my new-to-me Wayfarer for better cruising and wondering if you had any concerns about the Jib cleat mounting on the side deck, as opposed to the forward bench. Great viewing Steve, what an amazing journey. I have just came across this video…can you tell me about the shelter that was across from one stay to front of mast to the other stay? Was it for shelter from cold wind / spray or reduce water coming inboard?

This boat I think you are talking about was Ayesha an Egyptian Felluca . That boat now is kept at Meganissi island by Lefkada Is western Greece :-)

Steven, a great travelog. When you were building the Ayesha in Turkey a boating/sailing magazine did a major article about it's construction. This was about 1991 or soon after. Can you tell me the name of the magazine please and I will try to search out a back issue which I have been seeking since I originally read the article. I believe that you did the design plans for the boat. Any info you can provide would be appreciated.

Hello Steve, I was wondering what model Wayfarer did you sail? I have heard that some Wayfarers can be difficult to right in a Capsize and are prone to turtling/inverting. Was this a concern of yours?

Wayfarer Mk 4 . In all my trip I did not capsize and yes Wayfarers are difficult to right so best avoided. :-)

+Snake Plisken Ayesha is in the shipyard at Nidri now. I sold her many years ago, now she is up for sale once again but with a lot of work needed someone could pick her up for a snip:-)

That was great. I am working on a plan... Nothing even close to this exciting, but I want to sail a similar boat down the coast of North Carolina USA, next spring. If all turns out good I would like to try and sail the entire East coast of the USA. U fortunately I'm having trouble finding a Wayfair. Lol

@@Kitiwake lol i got a plastic canoe, I was planing on useing with a home made sail kit.......but when i took it out, I slipped on an algae covered boat ramp knocking me out for a few seconds. I ended up in the ER getting stitches over my eye and treatment for flesh eating bacteria and three different bacterial infections and a staph infection.. New Bern North Carolina has got to have the most slickest algea in the US. Atleast i was already planning on getting new glasses... lol. Back to the planning stages..

Just an update. I ended up losing part of my foot.. a big toe mostly. Had a blood infection also. But I did survive. I tried the trip in a small plywood boat that ended up breaking apart and turned out the screws and fasteners were rotted and not made for the salt water. I saved the sails and some of the hardware. I did sail it a few weeks before it started to come apart at the seams and I mean that quite literally. I can not complain because the boat was free, and the lady that gave it to me had just repainted it and it seemed very solid. After a week in the salt water the paint started coming loose and I could see the rust from the metal screws. The mast was wooden and the boom was aluminum. I sold it to guy building a home made boat, for a whopping $300 USD. But I still have my eye on a project Lightning. I figure if all goes well, next spring I'll give it another. try.

How long did this trek take you from beginning to end?

I've been on a couple of sailing holidays going between the Greek islands. But unfortunately it won't happen again. So I almost hit the dislike because I'm so envious. But I hit the thumbs up anyway

Those fishermen did you a huge favor by leaving you at the harbor. Because if they had attempted to tow you out they would of been lifted up and crashed down on top of you and your boat, probably killing someone.
