Way Overrated? Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 + 0-60mph, First Ride, Impressions
I've heard tons of great things about this bike. Today I'm finally taking the 2017 Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 out for my first solid ride. I'll do a 0-60, try getting it on one wheel, and see if this is worth all the hype or totally overrated. Tag along for my first ride, review, impressions, and thoughts on the bike!

Regarding the styling, the fact that it’s not trying to be a Harley is what makes it so cool.

IDK, kind of reminiscent of a Softail. I think they took some styling cues, without being a 1/2 size clone.....

@@deangullberry5148Fair point. Many Japanese cruisers tip their stylistic hats to Harley & Indian and add their own special ingredient to it; which usually is better performance.
Thank you for the shout out, my friend! I knew you could wheelie that Vulcan! It’s a great bike for sure. You and Jackie stay safe out there! I’ve been watching her progress, she’s doing awesome!

Dude! Gas Works Garage is the reason I'm looking to buy a 650s. My two bikes of choice right now are the Yamaha mt07 and the 650s. Leaning towards the 650s for the comfort as well as performance.

Hypothetically if you never wheelie before and you are getting a Vulcan do you think it’s possible without downing the bike or crash
wheelie on a vulcan 😳 🖖
Personally I find those wheelies impressive AF.
You know you're living in a friendly part of the world when you can leave your phone on the side of the road, do a few wheelies and come back to find your phone was respectfully left alone by the locals :)

Jon, I really had ZERO doubt you could get it up on one wheel! Awesome bro! The V650S was my first bike after a long hiatus not riding. Didn’t want something too fast after so long not riding but also something I wouldn’t get bored with after a month of riding. This bike is super fun, glad you got your hands on one finally! Keep up the great vids, been watching for a while now.
This is my favorite motorcycle channel. You can wheelie ANYTHING! 😎✌🏽
These are possibly underrated bikes... They deserve more popularity and sales as against the Overrated Harleys ( Just looks, no substance !). I lived in LA for 4 years, don’t remember seeing a Vulcan in flesh ( as against tons of Harleys ).. Back in India now and a proud owner of a Vulcan !!

I own a 2019 model. Great little bike. I ride it on the highways and bumper to bumper traffic and it's quite agile despite the wheelbase and the clutch is so light. Tons of fun and is quite comfortable for the pillion too.
great review like always and sweet wheelies... i love that you test the bike through all the paces. 1.power, 2.comfort, 3.style, 4.wheelies !!!!:-)
Just went to a motorcycle dealership today and found this bike, INSTANTLY fell in love with it. Dream bike fs.
Haven’t ridden in a number of years due to failed spinal surgery. However, I finally retired and my lovely bride ok’d the purchase of a motorcycle as a retirement celebration. Opted for the 2022 Vulcan S and I’m so very happy with it. My previous bikes were 1100 or larger and I am fairly confident my spine couldn’t deal with those, but this is light enough and peppy enough that I’m truly enjoying being back on two wheels.
Actually I think the Vulcan-S is one of the best looking bikes in this class on the market. It also comes in all different colors and themes...

LOVE the intake noise on these. I test rode the same one, a 2017 SE, best color. That bike surprised the hell out of me with how much fun it was! I really want one, and I already have a Versys 650. The Vulcan S is basically a recumbent Ninja 650.
I’m glad you like the bike. I just bought a 2017 myself 2 weeks ago, and wondered what your thoughts on it would be.

Do it! They keep the same model for 1 to 2 decades. This model is new. You'll have a happy long run and still be able to get parts. You can buy the service manual and it is just great tech! Their dealers aren't like car dealers so if you dont do your own maintenance most likely you'll get good service. If Kawasaki keeps models running for two decades & parts flowing with great engineering I will keep promoting them. If you can't afford super big but want something with decent size then this.
Great video. Your reviews on this helped us decide on the vulcan as a second bike for our channel. 1 week until we collect
Got to love the Vulcan s. Cruiser that rides like a sport bike. One of the most underrated motorcycles on the market.
Brother Jon you are one motorcycle riding STUD! How you figured out the balance & speed & power of the bike and then you were dialed in! Amazing skills!!!! Great channel!
If you want a bike that you know will always start and always do it's job and still hang with the big boys, as well as out accelerate the big boys, but still be small enough to just jump on real quick and have fun with, this is your bike. It does everything good in a small easy to handle package, and it will last forever.

Oh wow awesome! Not at that point, if ever, in my riding experience, but awesome to see that it can wheelie. Figured it would be tough with the long wheel base and forwards, but you did it with flying colors. Nice
I love my Vulcan S. Great bike for the price. A really great time can be had on this bike for very little money. I ( like a lot of others) initially passed this bike by when I was looking at new bikes. But the reviews were always so great I had to ride one. I’m glad I bought the Vulcan S. It’s just a very surprising good bike for the money.
Great job brutha!! Great stuff as always!
Jon - you've owned & hard-tested more bikes than most have in a lifetime, and drawn your own very rational conclusions. And, you seem to be an interesting husband & father. Your subscribers respect that. In the past year, I've watched 50-100 videos about the Vulcan S650, including those from GWG. Some are about sheer speed, some about modifications, some about touring, some about daily rider, and yours initially about wheelies. Look forward to more videos from both you & Jackie about this extraordinary machine. Stay safe.

Hey, I'm also looking for my first bike and am looking at both the Versys and this. How does being close to the ground feel on the Vulcan feel on highways and around traffic? Do you feel like other cars can see you, or do you think sitting higher would be better for riding in thick traffic?
Hats off to you for getting that up on one wheel, I thought no way, you have a gift!!

That's a good deal. A year later can't find a 2015 for 5 or 6k
Damn that was sick. I've never seen a wheelie on a Vulcan. Have you thought of getting a Honda Magna?
Just got the 2020 KVS ABS few weeks ago. Had a 2009 Harley 1200 Nightster for 5 years, but had to sell it due to health problems. Had a Honda Interceptor before that. Never thought I’d ride again. Two years later and my health has greatly improved, time to ride again. This bike handles completely different from my Harley, took a few rides to get used too. I LOVE IT! Light, agile, super smooth clutch and suspension. Extremely balanced at higher speeds on interstate. It most definitely is a hybrid just like you described. Thanks for the awesome review! 😎✌🏼👍🏼
All your videos have convinced me to get this bike next, currently rocking my 2001 Honda VFR800 and find it's the PERFECT hybrid sport tourer, now to get another hybrid, a sport cruiser just makes sense to me. Sport bikes are a bit small and not ergonomic for my 6'2" frame and traditional cruisers just feel sluggish and heavy, this looks like fun and possibly can get my wife and kid to ride.
Kawasaki been doing this for ages. Like in the early 80s they had the GPZ 900 superbike and used the same engine in ZL900 Eliminator cruiser. At the end of 80s they made GPZ 500 paralel twin sportbike, and same engine with small mods was used in ER5 naked, EN500 Cruiser and KLE 500 enduro. So its old and proven Kawasaki business tactics they are still rockin 40 years later. FYI I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work.

I had no doubts about it because of you saying that it had the power, next video I would love to see you shifting Through those gears. I'm just messing with you, muchas Gracias mi amigo it was a great video.
Just got my Vulcan S ~ mostly ‘cause I’m short. But it’s an easier ride than the bikes on the MSF course. Looks just like this one but lime green. Might be a beginner’s bike but I think you gotta be a pro to pop a wheelie on it! Well done!
Great looking bike and Gas Works Garage is already on my Subscribed list.
I bought one last year. I’m on the tall side for it at 6’ 4” but they market this bike with the “Ergo-Fit” program. 3 seats to choose from, 2 different handlebars, and longer shifter rod moving foot pegs and shifter further forward. They can fit someone as short as 5’ 2” to 6’ 2” is the claim. Then there’s me slightly outside those parameters but I’m happy. I got it in a very retro “Stormcloud blue”.

Awesome wheelies ! Curious if you have to re-title the bikes during the sales flip or is it processed by way of the prior owner ?

I'm not an expert but I have a hunch that it is much more safe on two wheels. Like the vid but I will keep mine on two. 👍 Glad you gave the bike a good chance. I am considering one now.

Subscribed. BTW, how does this compare to the street rod 750 overall. I plan on buying one of these or a mt07 this year
Bought one 3 weeks ago. Plenty fast, fun, feels light... just does everything well. Loving it. It gets about 85 miles per tank if you drive it the way you wanna drive it, heh, but that is NP.

@@singlecell2498 @single cell It is a great bike for around town. I have a few thousand miles on it. I put a Delkevic pipe, some viking semi-hard bags, and a few other cosmetic goodies on it. It is not a good bike for crushing highway miles (I have no windscreen). It is a BLAST down twisty roads, though, and it is comfortable enough for every day cruising. It really is a Z650 with a low seat height, longer wheelbase, and forward foot controls. It wants to be ridden like a middle weight naked bike. Edit: you won't be short shifting gears and using the torque of the engine to cruise around. Your clutch hand stays pretty busy*

@@singlecell2498 At ~70mph with no wind screen there is too much wind buffeting to sit comfortably and cruise. If you added a wind screen I am sure it would be fine. It is a feet forward, arms outstretched riding position, so your body kinda acts like a parachute when you have no wind protection. I don't notice it when I am bombing backroads and pushing through corners well above 70mph. I am tucked in more, leaned forward, and focusing on the ride at that point, though. The only time it bothers me is when I am just trying to chill and cruise at 70+ on a long, straight, open highway. Edit: More weight, more engine displacement, and a windscreen would be better on the highway... but man, this bike destroys those kinda bikes as soon as the road gets curvy
Such a legend for this wheelie sesh

Hi I have it and i love it! I think i will never be able to wheelie it but you are amazing.
Went out and got a 2017 at an auction last year for $3700. I put 1,400 miles on it last year, it now has 4,400 miles on it. I absolutely love this bike. I just bought a 2019 today, first bike. I also happen to have a similar Silverado so I've got a question for ya: what brand/how long is the ramp you use to load it up?
Absolutely love my Vulcan s. Wont be pulling any wheelies though.. Thank mate.
Ive moved on from mid sized bikes and now ride an M109R but I still love everything about that Vulcan S...except how it looks from the back. Being a basically narrow bike, in addition to its low seat height (both giving confidence to beginners) any rider of average size or more looks like they're riding a mini moto from behind. But a sissy bar seems to change that impression. If I ever do get one as a second bike I'd fit one of those sissy bar and storage rack attachments to give the bike a more balanced rear profile.
once you like the function, the form starts looking better
Badass! I love my Vulcan S.
I bought my VS to help prevent me from riding wheelies. It’s at least curbed the “oops... well since it’s up, guess I’ll rock out the BP for a few blocks”.
Totally changed my view on this bike ha coold vid John!

Hyea, if you've ever driven the moto guzzi bobber V9, how does it compare to this Vulcan S? Was it lame?
I love everything about the Kawasaki Vulcan S and the 2016 with that redish color is the prettiest. But I have to ride a trike these days due to my wife's many health issues. But if I could get her to agree to another two wheeler it would be the Vulcan S. I love that the Vulcan S is NOT a V-Twin and doesn't go chug chug chug. I love the way it revs and has great quick revving power. Only down fall is I'm too OLD for wheelies (70)
I sat on one of those at the dealership and it felt very comfortable...might be on my list for my next scooter

Nice wheelie game brother I wasn’t sure at first if you would get her up with weight forward like that nice 👍 When I worked for HD me and a few of the other bagger guys had a silly competition we would take off in a straight line and see who could scrape their floorboards the most times in a row staying in the lane I had the record for a long time at 5 later a buddy of mine did 6 lol just a silly motorcycle rally game we played just weaving left to right scraping floorboards on each side of the bike it was harder for some guys because they usually turned better on one side lol
