Waves InPhase is a very specific plugin with a very specific purpose - for correcting and optimizing the phase relationship between two sources. While this is traditionally used with multi-mic configurations on a single source (like snare top and snare bottom), it also has a powerful impact on how low end sources like kicks and basses interact.

I cant believe that i slept so hard on this phase thing. Literally Djing since 18 and producing since like 5 years and only now seeing what a extreme difference it makes. Thank you
This is the BEST InPhase tutorial I have ever seen! Thanks so much for sharing Brother.

Having watched the video I have a much better understanding and realise that it can help with stacking samples, which I do do sometimes, so maybe at last I will get to use the plugin. My problem is that I just don't learn by reading manuals, I have to watch someone using the tool to understand how to work it. Thank you again Matthew.

Bro thank you so much for explaining this plugin to a non sound engineer producer. This is the most easy understandable tutorial on this plugin. Thank you. 👍🏻
I can hear the difference clear as day even on my phone speakers at low volume. Great video! Coming from sound reinforcement myself, I don’t think you producers could ever underestimate the importance of low-end phase issues!

@@WeissAdvice I KNEW IT! But if my system is getting hacked and the result isn’t that my identity is stolen, but rather, the videos I watch are more tailored to my needs, I think I’m ok with it! 🫠. And thank you!!! Just saw that this video is also in the newsletter gift along with the low end guide, which is awesome! You are killing it! I just used in phase on a live set I recently got sent to work on (live as in recorded in front of an audience, rather than just played together in the studio) so as I’m sure you’re well aware, I’ve got a lot of competing mics, all of which picked up a bit of the other sources. My job became so much easier once all those tracks were nudged into better phase correlation, and while as you pointed out, there’s now one right answer (all the sounds are coming from lots of different sources, distances, and directions, so a move that lines the snare up with the vocals might make the guitars even more out of phase, etc) I at least knew what to listen for, look for, and how to A/B my options to find the best correlation I could given the situation. It’s all thanks to you! I am still very very early in my career, and technically still a student, so money is tight and I rarely if ever buy paid content that isn’t backed by an educational institution, but I’ve gotten so much from you and your channel since I discovered you a few weeks ago that I am very strongly considering picking up some of your courses! I am starting to feel like the money I spend on them would quickly be turned back around into more efficient working practices for me, which means I can do more in less time, take on more projects, and earn that money back in no time. An investment that really will pay for itself. My professors haven’t been in the field for a long time, so while they’ve taught me everything I could ever want to know about protools, they don’t have great tips for modern engineers developed from personal experience, and that’s what I’m missing now. Can’t wait to see what you’ll be teaching us next!

Very underrated topic…yet one of the most important ones. I have UAD Little Labs plugin, using it when standard phase does not work the way I need. Have been looking at that Waves plugin for some time but never tried it…

I have to admit this is one of the first plugins that I ever bought and I didn't really understand what it did and have never had occasion to use it! I'd imagined it would be good for making weird effects. I never work with live drums. I'm interested to hear what Matthew has to say about it [posted before watching the video]

Great demonstration of a great plugin. Q: Could you please do a further tutorial on how to phase align an entire drum kit using InPhase?
@WeissAdvice

I've done a phase alignment tutorial for live drums... can't remember if it's in a KZread video or a paid full length. But I know it's somewhere LOL!
Does Anyone know How To Set This For A Kick And Bass In FL Studio ? Everytime I Do It Only The Kick/Bass Signal Appears In Channel 1/2. I Can't Ever Get Any Signal In The Sidechain Channel. I'm Legit Pullling My Hair Out Over This !! Any Advice Would Be Life Saving !!
I had to come back and revisit this video because I finally decided to buy the Melda Audio MautoAlign plugin today. (It’s on sale). Well, there’s a spectral phase compensation option on this plugin that kinda blew my mind on a few examples. I’m not totally sure what’s going on under the hood with this thing (I have some ideas) but it is doing some awesome stuff with the stereo field on some classic synth sounds. I’m actually blown away. I gotta research it a bit more but this is some cool stuff.
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
It's probably frequency dependent all-pass filters. Not sure. If it's better than InPhase though, I'll throw this thing in the garbage.
@davidasher22
Жыл бұрын
@@WeissAdvice yeah, go give it a try. I’m pretty sure you can demo any of their plugins before buying them. The spectral phase compensation use a FT to divide the track into its elements (like a Fourier Transform does) and then I believe it phase aligns those waves? Thats what it sounded like when I researched it. Then it puts it back together. Yeah, that’s pretty intense if you ask me. I’m not even sure if that’s just how spectral processing works then. I understand FTs but I never put the two together but now that I think about it that does seem like an ideal way of creating a spectrogram. I’m gonna research it some more. I’m literally having this revelation right now so… I need some more info. You probably know.
Amazing. Need to use this plugin more now that you made everything clear. Would you use this tool for layering other sounds to, for example snares or any other sounds. This video makes me wanna stack alot of sounds :D great as always. Thanks!
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
snares, yes. Basically anything with low frequencies will have an audible phase interaction. Once you start getting into higher freq stuff it makes less of a difference.
Hey great tutorial, thank you. Question - with the corellation meter, do you actively aim for plus in the blue area or just zero minimum and above?
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I try to get as blue as possible, generally.
This was well structured, and put together. Only question is what happens when you have 4 kicks?
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
Great question! I prioritize my kick - and decide which one is the lead. Then I kinda figure out what each kick is really bringing to the table. I conform the phase to my main kick, and then do some filtering if say one of the kicks is really only there for click of the attack or something like that.
Great video thank you. What happens if you ad Soundradix Pi after fixing the low end like this ? is there un additional improvement ore does it just get messy ?
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I've had hit or miss experiences with Pi. Where I find it best is synth layers. Sound isn't necessarily meant to be 100% in phase all the time - it's not a realistic proposition when you consider that phase and time on correlated. Sometimes it works, sometimes it makes the depth of the record vanish, sometimes it makes the sources pitch modulate in a weird way.
Top notch

Why isn't the correlation bar at the bottom right getting any closer to 1?
it feels like first kick, blue one is just shorter, i mean amplitude expanding faster and it means that blue kick higher in pitch, so if you stretch the kick a little longer, or put it down on few semitones it might be than match with second kick.
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
They do kinda have a similar thing going on - you might be right on that
I have a question , how do I apply these changes to the tracks ? Yes it does a great job but how do I apply it to the track which was sidechained ?
Very interesting video Matthew! I was a bit familiar with phase interaction, but this was very informative. You're really selling me on this plugin... I'm interested tho, would you use this technique in mid and higher range? With synths, or maybe even analog instruments? Or perhaps synth with bass or drums?
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I don't find it's particularly helpful once you get above the lows-low mids. The phase interaction of everything becomes so complex that there's never really a right or wrong. Snare layering is a yes though because a lot of snares have fundamental tones in the bass range.
@filiprangus5826

@@WeissAdvice exactly my thinking, thank you !
Really well explained, thanks! I've used nudge and all pass filters separately before but hadn't thought to combine them. Also sometimes do you use transient shapers to take off the transient of one of the samples? It's something I've been playing with but there's a lot of differing and strong opinions on how to go about layering transients :D at this point I'm not sure if your ending bit is an unfortunate case of the youtuber yips or an evil genius plan to sway people by saying subscribe as many times as possible 😵💫
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely - there's a low end video..... either one I did on KZread or in the Low End Guide where I use a gate to shave off transient from a layer. Compressor, transient designer, gate - all same kind of idea, sometimes it's just better to have a clean attack from one drum. The ending bit is a combination of my evil genius as well as my stupid dumb mouth LOL. Also my fiancé was sitting on the couch watching me film this so I'm being super distracted by her laughing at me.

InPhase is great. But if you ever work with a full live drum kit, AutoAlign is the way to go. Amazing plugin to get a whole multi-mic drum recording completely in phase.
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I do like AutoAlign quite a bit. It's certainly faster for drum kit, and you really don't need the all pass filter for live drums.
@stubkar
Жыл бұрын
I actually picked up In Phase because I was getting frustrated with Auto Align. AA is indeed great, but sometimes, when working with the same two sources, you can get a dozen different "distances" between the sources. That shouldn't be the case. I just want accurate, quick results.
Not only was that kick a slam drunk, so was this tutorial! Curious if the same idea can be applied to real kick drum and real bass guitar
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I haven't been slam drunk in a while. The same idea can apply, but pocket > phase relationship when it comes to kick and bass guitar.
Omg I need a phase alignment plugin. I’m that guy that sits there for hours checking every kick sample. I mix a lot of metal bands and they always have samples and some how they never line up consistently! I’m finally figuring out ways to fix that inconsistency issue by resampling with midi but I still need to phase align the first one. I h@vent bought a Waves plugin in a few years though. They got me with that update plan thing and it kinda pissed me off. Ever try any of the other options like Melda AutoAlign ?
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
I'm not personally a huge Waves fan.. not because they don't make good software but mainly because they treat content creators like ass if I'm being completely transparent. I've used SoundRadix, and I think that one does a really good job - it just doesn't provide the fine control. Haven't tried the Melda or Magix one yet.
Wouldn't you put the phase alignment plugin at the end of the chain because plugins like a low cut will adjust the phase after?
@HollerAtcherBoi
8 ай бұрын
my thoughts exactly
I cannot get this plugin to work at all on FL studio. I would expect it to work the same as sidechaining my bass to my kick in KickStart 2, but this plugin does not seem to work for me. It does not have a sidechain option under the fl studio processing connections settings. If anyone has directions on how to get this plugin to work on fl studio please let me know.

The problem with InPhase is that the sidechain monitoring has some latency, as you can see the sidechain (beta) signal always starts later then the alpha, this make it a bit unprecise.
@WeissAdvice
Жыл бұрын
It shouldn't if there's no additional plugins on the side chain source's inserts. At least in pro tools.
@housegeek3511
Жыл бұрын
@@WeissAdvice Yeah right it should not but it does at least in Logic. I found out cause I did several tests comparing with the new shaperbox oscilloscope and I saw that with inphase off the correlation was ok, with inphase on monitoring the correlation was negative. If you zoom in ( inside inphase) on the signals you can see that the beta starts always later, you have to use the delay wheel putting it all on the left to compensate.
Would you use this with a kick and 808?
@WeissAdvice
8 ай бұрын
It's not as consistent with kick and 808 because the phase relationship will change with pitch.
@HollerAtcherBoi
8 ай бұрын
@@WeissAdvice Makes sense. Thanks! Matt, i've been noticing that often times, with kick and 808, only certain kicks become out of phase with the 808, as the 808 hits different notes. Therefore, I either automate a polarity flip on those kicks, or I create a separate track for those specific kicks and I flip the polarity of that track. What's your solution when only certain notes of an 808 pattern are out of phase with the kick?
with all the waves plugins they don't have anything to do isolation or separation stems breakdowns
