WaveMax Indoor TV Antenna Review - Does It Really Work?

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I review the the WaveMax indoor TV antenna. It's being heavily advertised online and possibly even my KZread channel with the claim that it gives you access to over 100 free HD channels. Does it really work or is it a scam?

Amazon serves a purpose for me; I'm disabled and don't drive, so using Subscribe & Save to get stuff is a huge convenience for me. But I've started avoiding many third party sellers because I found a lot of them to be shady. Or just annoying. For a while, almost every time I bought something from a third party seller, I'd get an email asking for a review. It was annoying, and I found out that there's a way to turn that off, somewhere in my account, I forget where. That did put a stop to the annoying emails. Then one day, I got a snail mail letter, addressed to me by hand.. It was from an Amazon seller, begging me for a review of the item I bought from then. The item? A clear plastic shower curtain liner. Seriously? It hangs there and keeps water from getting on the floor when I take a shower. What else is there to say? Then there are the ones who try ti bribe people to review items. I bought this little dongle thingy that you plug into your phone and put pictures from the phone onto it. It was cheap, about $20, and it works fine, no problems. But then I got a postcard from the Amazon seller (since they are still not allowed to email me about reviews) offering me a $30 gift card in exchange for a five star review. I'd say that it deserved four stars, but I didn't feel like writing any review, and being paid to write a positive review is unethical. Amazon claims that they are cracking down on this, but I am not seeing it. I used to write Amazon reviews when I felt like it, and if I had something to say that might help people. But no more, because now you have no idea as to what is real and what is fake. And that is what we are seeing with the junk antennas with all the five star reviews. Amazon doesn't care, which is why this KZread channel provides a valuable service, and why I choose to support it.

Antenna Man.. I am old school amateur radio enthusiast. I had my first hand experience helping my father out installing our off air antenna on the roof of the building and always remembered dropping down the 300 ohm cable from the roof. Many ways the way we watch television has changed since then but the basics of radio reception have remained the same. Thank you for being that person who keeps many of the uninformed people of this and future generations informed of the basics of television reception and the crucial roles the off air antennas play. Godspeed to you and your KZread station.

Thanks Tyler, these worthless antennas need to be called out. I've built a couple of Gray-Hoverman antennas (one for me and one for my aunt) just to see if I could. They worked a lot better than the flat panel antennas from a big box store. I recently picked up a GE Crystal antenna at an estate auction for $5, new in the box. I played around with it one night, just by propping it up in a first floor window, and was amazed at how well it worked. It has a built in amp, so no idea how long it will work, but it picked up all 17 of my local channels very strongly. The kicker was, I got 4 very weak channels from 100 miles away that I wasn't expecting to see when the scan was done. Granted, it's very flat in that direction, but still...2 of the 4 weren't there the next day when the sun came up, but I'm still impressed with the little GE. I'll keep it for a back-up.

With some exceptions, usually the higher the antenna, the better. With some exceptions, usually the larger the antenna, the better. RF amplifiers usually don't work very well. However, when the amp is at the antenna, rather than the TV end of the cable, your results can improve, sometimes.

I paid 200 dollars for a large antenna that mounts on the roof, the antenna is made by channel master. This antenna powers four TVs with great reception on all available channels from Mt. Wilson which is just NE from Los Angeles. I live on the coast near Huntington Beach, CA which is about forty miles away. The TV receivers get over 150 channels over the air with this channel master large antenna, I think it was 193 channels recieved to be exact. I bought the antenna directly from the Channel Master antenna website after seeing so many bad antennas on Amazon as protest against Amazon even though Amazon does sell Channel Master antennas for about fifty dollars more than Channel Master website. I often use Antenna Man channel for trouble shooting problems with reception on weak stations like KCET and KFLA channel eight, the news is 24/7.

A paperclip is a better antenna than that WaveMax antenna. I use one of the inexpensive Phillips rabbit ears antennas that you show in the background in this video, which you reviewed some time ago, and it works great for my location. I have it mounted flat to a wall in my apartment that is facing the Nashville market transmitter sites, which are 20-25 miles away from me. The only Nashville market station I cannot receive is WNPT, which broadcasts on VHF 7 and anemic transmitter power. I purchased a one input Televes antenna preamp and the signal strength is much better, but still cannot receive WNPT. I just use the PBS app and stream WNTP's programming.

Thanks for the advice when it comes to sticking with US antenna marketers. I was convinced by what I had seen online when it comes to antennas until now. Outdoor antennas still are better and outdoor antennas provide the best reception. I live in a valley with foothills and the transmitters are located in different locations but only receive one local channel due to the location of the transmitters varying with one that is above a foothill while the rest have varying reception strengths but none besides one can be received clearly. That was not the case before the switch from analog to digital when I was able to receive all local stations with fair reception but had ghostly images appearing from other stations that went away by pointing the antenna north or south.

Don't you just love when these cheap antenna companies say something in their ads like, "Thanks to a Federal Government mandate, broadcasters are required to transmit a clear digital TV signal over the air"? Well, duh! It's pointing to the analog to digital transition from 2009. That's nothing new or special. Soon, if ATSC 3.0 takes off (DRM-free hopefully), they can start saying the government mandates digital broadcasts up to 4K over-the-air!

I don't think those ads are for this particular antenna. I've seen the ad you talk about, where the guy says you can get a signal from on a boat, and that is for something called "Clear TV". It's a little tiny thing that has a couple of telescoping "rabbit ears". There is actually a legitimate line of antennas called "ClearStream", from Antennas Direct (a recommended company), and i wonder if some people confuse the two and buy the junk one because it is a lot cheaper to buy. I haven't see the commercial in a while, but it always comes back. Junk commercials never die. In fact, today I was watching Toon In With Me on MeTV, and I saw a commercial for some product with Billy Mays, that loud infomercial guy. The dude has been dead since 2009, but they still show his commercials. So Skeevy Antenna Scammer Guy is not going away unless something is done to stop the sales of these scammy products.

I keep waiting for a DX monster external DTV tuner that is worldwide compatible and easily upgradeable via software. Last one I ever saw that even comes close is the Icom IC-R7000 with the TV-R7000 adapter for NTSC television. That was YEARS ago and it's only good for analog broadcasts.

Okay so I have a question. I've been watching a few of your videos. I have a 2000 sunline with an antenna on the roof so I tried to make it work and scan the other day. Could not pick up any channels. It may be where I'm at or is the antenna too old? I've heard that they changed the way they broadcast in the old antennas may not work anymore. Is this correct?

It does look like a decent antenna but unfortunate my video reviews of Stellar Labs antennas perform very poorly likely due to a combination of the larger size and no marketing done by Stellar Labs. I've shifted to reviewing solely smaller, consumer friendly antennas that my viewers appreciate more than "I don't want that thing on my roof." It's unfortunate. I like larger antennas but I need to give my audience what they want.

It is the transmitter, not the antenna, which has a "range", provided some standard antenna, I would presume a dipole in free air, or some radio technical standard for an antenna, at some elevation above everything else. If the antenna is placed even higher and have more elements which gives more amplification of the signal, the greater the range. But ultimately, the strength of the sender, the wavelength and the placement of the antenna and some other conditions decide the range. Stating the "range" on the box with the antenna, is just plain nonsense. Any random junk antenna placed in the corner of a room, somewhere, is not such a standard measuring device, not even a good antenna with multiple elements, and a signal amplifier would be that. In my country, Norway of Europe, the broadcasters even overcompensated the greater effeciency of digital TV over analog, by reducing the transmitter power, plus VHF ch 2-4 / 5-12 (PAL system) being phased out, so the "range" of the digital transmissions actually got far worse, unless you mounted a far more powerful antenna in a more favourable position, more often than not, with a signal amplifier, and high end coax. Am really missing the days of analog TV because of the DX-ing possibilities where we could receive both Swedish and Danish TV in southern parts of Norway, some places steadily, with a really really powerful multi element antenna, sometimes even stacked 2x or 4x, and on one condo, I even saw a UHF 8x setup, long before digital TV, for the Swedish TV2 with its transmitter in Sunne being 130 km away from Oslo. While Swedish TV1 was sent on VHF and was far more easy to receive with a 12-13 element yagi, with preamplifier, still had to be mounted several meters above the roof. Thus - we lucky Norwegians around Oslo and south eastern Norway, had 3 instead of only 1 TV channel. (With even a more lucky few in the far south, additionally having Danish and probably from time to time German TV DX-ing in on hot summer days due to inversion in the athmosphere!)
