Wave Function - Dirtywave M8 Ambient

First semi-generative track with the Dirtywave M8 tracker in live mode. Still learning and figuring out what it's capable of, but one thing for sure is it's a hell of a lot of fun to program. The built in synths and sampler features really sold me. 8 tracks of stereo samples, limited only by the size of the SD card, with lots of playback options and slicing features, and excellent effects in such a small device.
Sorry about the hiss/noise floor. I didn't have my 1010 Bluebox set up correctly.

This song is a great example of how full and lush this little unit can get. My biggest issue is being afraid to take it out of the house, I waited too digdummalee long to get mine. This is super cool. I am getting a Polyend Tracker soon and was just wondering about this. I am not sure if you'd be open to it, but I would love to hear a little about your planning/thought process behind a track like this. Do you simply just try and find a bunch of samples/sounds that are in the same scale, and then a bunch of other effect noises etc... that you think might work and then program in the probabilities? Higher ones that you want to for the body of the song, lower ones for the more melodic, common phrases and then super low for the stuff that really only pops in periodically?

  • @stateazure

    @stateazure

    Thanks! Well it depends really. Some ambient dones I've done on the M8 are looped samples, you can set the sample to just loop and pretty much ignore the sequencer. But if using internal synths, you can use long sustained notes over very long phrases (they don't have to be short), and if that's not enough you could always set to the tempo very slow. Anyway, I like to use samples a lot on the M8. The built in synth engine is decent, but I think the M8 shines with samples, or a combination.

It also gives you very handy info at the bottom screen of the device for many selected values, so you can see exactly how much Random % Chance etc is set..for example.

    Your 'Far Places' is really beautiful work, although I wonder why you chose such heavy filtering over the entire track. As far as the mood goes, I like that it is filtered/soft almost dreamlike and subdued, but I think you went way too far with it (although the guitar has some nice moments of clarity here and there). I could imagine a much, much better mix and final master that keeps the softness but just has more clarity and less mud. I can't fault the music though, you did a fantastic job, but the mixing unfortunately let's it down a bit..and about 1:24 - 1:25 there's even a pretty bad clash of low frequencies that could be fixed. Again, real nice stuff though, I'll check out some more.

    Thank you, glad you enjoyed this! I'm no expert on trackers or using the M8 at all, and I still need to look up certain functions. Bare in mind I'm using a long sample loop, which you can hear right at the start with a nice pad playing (and birds etc). That sample I created in the DAW and created a seamless loop to use for one of the tracks as background atmosphere to build upon, it just loops. I also use good drum samples/loops (sliced) for percussion etc, rather than default internal stuff. Lead parts, arps, basses I use the internal synths. For actual composition, I just apply the musical knowledge I already have, which spans many years at this point. Composition, musical theory etc is always vastly more useful/important than the actual equipment.
