It's a Welsh word. My friend was born and grew up here in the Philippines and he has always loved it here. However, he has better chances of having a good life in Australia. So though he hates it there, he went there to work and live. His burning desire to return to and to live here in the Philippines combined with the certainty that he can never do so produces the emotion called "hiraeth."

I wonder if you've heard of the Japanese word "hitsuzen." It's a philosophical concept that roughly translates to the words "inevitable" and "necessary." The definition (from the manga xxxHolic) reads : "A naturally foreordained event. A state in which other outcomes are impossible. A result which can only be obtained by a single causality, and all other causalities would necessarily create different results." It sounds exactly like what you have described -- coincidence on the surface, destiny in the detail.
