That is Jim H's house right next to the Dam Store, which he has run from 1971. Hope it doesn't collapse. This is west of Rapidan, MN. On the Blue Earth River. It will meet the Le Seuer River a few miles downstream and empty into the Minnesota at Mankato

Most of the early exploration of the Upper Mississippi Valley was by the French. Radisson and Groseilliers, Father Marquette, Father Hennepin, Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, etc. Learned that in Minnesota history class in 6th grade. Now you know where the names of major streets in downtown Minneapolis came from.

I agree. If we lose the Dam Store because BE County kicked the can down the road for 15 years to fix that dam and instead spent on their money on roundabouts and redoing Riverfront Drive every 2 years... I would imagine there would be quite an uproar. I'm already furious about it. It's endagering literally the entire downtown of Mankato/N Mankato.

Only if your are lucky. With a current that strong you don't have a chance once the water is there. We had similar flooding in Saxony (Germany) in 2002 and 2010. It was madness and I hope that they people downstream get the warning in time.

That is actually a house used by lockmasters. If you notice that many dams have houses or a house close to them, they're typically gated or locked private property owned by the state or local jurisdictions operating the dams. More often than not, they're owned and operated by the US Army Corp of Engineers.

The dam was built in 1908 but he state has other priorities. Blue Earth County estimated it would cost $82 million back in 2022 just to remove it. It's been damaged for a while and it hasn't been generating power since 2019.

I hope there's some kind of investigation. The dam has had issues for a while and in 2022 it was 15 Mil. to repair it, $82 Mil. to remove it, the County fought hard to have it removed. Citizins were petitioning, writing letters and ultimately voted to save it for $15 Mil.. Well, it never got done, nothing was ever finalized, BE County just left it sit on the back burner and occassionaly talked about taking it out. But this did not have to happen. Debris has been building up there since Friday and NOTHING was done about it, they just left it build up, and keep building up and now we have this. This dam has been moving flood waters, depris, and even trees through it's gates for 115 or so years. It's still standing tonight although comprimised. Blue Earth County absolutely failed us by not clearing and mainting the flood gates and properly maintaining the dam. If they had done their jobs, the water more than likely would have continured to go through the dam as intended rather than up and around it.

Looks like a lot of debris is piling up along the top of the dam.

Not so worried about the home in the video - when this dam fails suddenly everything along the banks downstream will be gone. Now would be a good time to hook up and move everything uphill.

They got everything out, of the house and The Dam Store. The family who owns all of that has been there for over 50 years. The adults who work at and own the store now grew up in that white house. It's heartbreaking. I live here, I know this family. The Dam Store is pretty locally famous :)

Don't they know not to let debris build up in front of a dam because it puts a tremendous amount of undue pressure on the top of the dam. They should have had a crane removing it before it started to overflow.

Looks like the engineers and technicians who said "I told you so" to keeping that spillway clear of derbies and well maintained were right. Often these are the ones who are falsely blamed for things like this but so often they are told by "managers" we don't have the funds to do everything you guys ask for. Like we just enjoy pending funds on work we love to do so much. They treat us like children asking for toys. So often the taxpayers will give us great structures and infrastructure but then cut back the funds for maintaining what they paid for. Everything needs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance that is just a fact.

Apparently we need to put the water spraying turbine units in those pre dam water ways to spray the water upwardly into rain clouds huh, and the box sein nets to capthur the carp and other fish that might be invasive species or chpped up in the spillway turbines, the weakened dam structures need to be shut off and asssssed for their safety, which of course means that the power is going to be shut off for a while..
