Waterford & Newfoundland

For Heritage Week, Waterford historian Maxine Keoghan is exploring some of the long history between Waterford and the island of Newfoundland.
We begin our week with a brief introduction to Waterford's links to the province of Newfoundland in Canada, their historical trading and fishing links and how this helped the devlopment of Waterford.
Maxine Keoghan gained her PhD from NUIG where her research focussed on the Irish diaspora. In 2017, Maxine travelled to Newfoundland to study the heritage of the people of South East Ireland, thanks to a scholarship from the Ireland Canada University Foundation.

To he honest we think about you all the time. It is on my bucket list to visit Newfoundland or as the Irish people called it "Talamh an Éisc" Even if I've never been there I feel connected to it in Song , Dance, Story and in accent.

When I was in Ireland, I was in a book store and the clerk said to me, I can't place your accent. What part of Ireland are you from..... My Mom and I laughed and told her we were Newfoundlanders. We are not as Irish as the Avalon, more British accent with an Irish lilt. Accents in Newfoundland vary greatly.

Great connection b/t NL and Ireland. My ancestors hail from Waterford on my mother side and from Letrium on my fathers side. I grew up in Newfoundland on the Southern Shore in a little fishing village called Trepassey. Ireland is on my bucket list..

My 3x great-grandfather, left Carrick-on-Suir for Tilting, NL around 1800. His wife's father (from Waterford) settled in Tilting in the mid-1700s. Their grandson left Tilting (for Boston) in the late 1800s.

They settled directly in Tilting, did they? Fogo Island is a very English-settled part of NL, I believe. I always thought that all the people's families came from further south in NL and migrated to Fogo Island. Tilting people had a different accent, more Irish than the other people on Fogo, even the other Roman Catholics in Fogo and Joe Batt's Arm.
