Watercress Line - 'Autumn Steam Gala' 18-19/10/2019

As the Autumn weeks roll by, it was turn of the Mid-Hants Railway to host their annual 'Autumn Steam Gala', this year held over the weekend of Friday the 18th - Sunday the 20th of October.
The event featured a healthy mix of passenger services with a short demonstration freight set, hauled by no fewer than five locomotives. Bolstering the Watercress Line's steam home-fleet, visiting Class 20 - D8059 would represent the changing face of the railways, and the transition between steam and diesel traction. As a result of Standard Class 4MT - 76017 developing a fault on the Saturday of the gala, Class 47 - 47579 stepped up briefly to ensure operations carried on without a hitch.
Resident 9F - 92212, with the expiry of its boiler ticket looming at the end of the year, has been given a true 'End of Steam' appearance. The use of white highlights echoing similar practices carried out by enthusiasts in the 1960's in the dying days of steam. The loco will now not be cleaned until withdrawal, only furthering its worn workhorse aesthetic.

Really was a day of four seasons. The rain was a challenge, but worth it.
Beautiful autumnal scenery - and the locos were fine, too!
I was there on the 19th, loved how 506 put it's freight train in the siding then back into Ropley to tow a certain 4mt tender engine into the sidings too, nice sound from 506 all the way!!!!! The s15 are now one of my favourite loco!!!!!
This the closest im gonna get to a railway this year! Always watch your videos big fan🤙

Are there any preserved Q1 Austerity Southern locos left. Us London trainspotters named the locos Dustbins for obvious reasons. Talking to railwaymen in Hither Green shed that was their name too! My apologies to modern rail fans us old 60’s steam heads had nicknames for many locos. You guys run my favourite railway videos. Respect and stay safe.

There is indeed one of them preserved. 33001 (C1) is preserved as part of the national collection at the NRM. No need to apologise, loco nicknames are still used in plentiful supply. The Q1's accumulated a number of nicknames - "Ugly Ducklings" has always been my preferred term. I'm glad you enjoy the videos.

TheSoutherner used the term dustbin because on freight they were always dirty and London area ones would have lime scale from hard water around top of boiler.
