Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
Season - 18
Episode - 09
Filmed on Location at - Colorado, USA.
Steve Griggs's love of art started early in life. While other children would lament field trips to the art museum, that was his favourite day of the school year! Steve's mother bought his first 'real' watercolor set of six tubes of paint, when he was in elementary school and his love of watercolor was born. Growing up in a large family made finding time and space for painting difficult. Whenever possible Steve would steal away to the basement of his childhood home where he would paint but never show anyone what he had done. Steve remained a 'closet artist' until he attended Michigan State University and graduated with a degree in Studio Art. Steve later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and studied Industrial Design. It wasn't until 2005 that Steve began to paint professionally, showing his paintings in galleries and juried art exhibitions. He currently has signature membership with Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society and Colorado Watercolor Society.
Steve Griggs's earliest influences and inspirations came from the Great Lakes region where he grew up. Throughout his lifetime he has been enamored of boats. Sailing vessels, lake freighters, military frigates; any type of boat has captured his imagination. Although Steve has resided in Colorado for many years, his paintings often reflect his love of the Great Lakes, fostered by frequent trips to his hometown near Detroit, Northern Michigan, and Wisconsin.
In addition to boats, Steve also paints landscapes and cityscapes. Steve frequently displays and sells work in local, state, regional, national, and international exhibitions and galleries. He offers workshops, demonstrations, and salons, as well as individual and small group painting lessons to help other artists understand and learn his unique style. Steve's students range from the very inexperienced artist to the professional painter. His paintings can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Steve Griggs currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Watercolor Society and continues his early love of art.
You can contact Steve Griggs about his art or art techniques directly via his website at stevegriggswatercolor.com/

When an artist makes it appear so easy and effortless it says to me he/she has become a master of the medium. As a painter myself, I truly enjoy watching another person channel the talent they have been blessed with to a blank piece of paper. Amazing body of work, well done sir...

Its always interesting to see how people lay out their work area, the pallet and default choice of colours, brushes, the work station / easel they use. I use a water pot with a second pot set inside it - one to wash the brush, the other as clean water. Saw that once on a vid - but it was never mentioned. Notice he puts his paint tubes in between his pallet and the painting. Kind of strange way to work.

He's clearly exceptionally good at what he does, but to be honest I think the "sketch" that he was using for a reference was quite a bit better than the piece he produced for the video. As always though, it's interesting, and helpful to my own work to see the process other successful artists go through to create their work. Work harder, practice more.

@@SteveGriggsWatercolor That makes perfect sense. I've taught lots of drawing and painting classes where I've done something ahead of time, but when I try to reproduce it & demonstrate what I did, it ends up being not quite the same. Thank you for doing the video with Graeme, anytime I can see what professional artist is up to, it's helpful. Also I am quite jealous of your studio & gallery space - that's exactly what I'd like one day.

Hi Lindy, great question! They are actually both water. I've manipulated the nozzle on the first bottle to give an uneven spray pattern but the second bottle gives an even, fine mist. The paint takes differently to the varying amounts of water on the paper and it gives a different effect.
