Hullo Emily, thank you for sharing your lovely hike with us and your extraordinary painting experience! I especially liked listening to you explain your process, like toning down that red shadow with some blue, marvelous! I enjoyed listening to you say, squint to remove those details. I did joy seeing you hike past wonderful scenic wonders to find a lovely scene that moved you to unpack your paints and get started! I did enjoy hearing you say “ take a picture” and this is true for any possible future painting that might just not move you during the hike. As the collection of flowers or the lonesome pine one. Thank you for sharing this hike with us. It is the perfect time of the year before it gets to hot and after most of the snow has gone. I hope that you are able to share another vista from this hike in a future video. An in home plein-air without any hiking or exposure to the elements! Please take care and have yourself a lovely day!

The scenery…..so many places to pick from! I think there are enough beautiful spots that you wouldn’t have to go anywhere else for quite a while. I was really impressed with your thumb nail sketch. That in itself made a nice painting. However, your finished painting….I love it! The sunlight and shade on the boulders, the tree, your background trees….everything was fantastic! I was spellbound watching you. I would love to see something like this ( or the pile of rocks and the partial tree, the clump of flowers …on Watercolor Mastery. What would be even better is if you would take us with you and paint along with you. Some of us don’t have the awesome scenery you do.). A wonderful tutorial…a spectacular plein air painting. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

Now that I've tried it, a lot of your tips in this video really mean a lot more to me and I learned a few more tips than I would have before :) Really glad to see you explaining when you're getting too caught up in the details, when you're alternating colors in the background, and how you handle a large ground covering without getting stuck. I’m an English watercolourist, now living in Colorado Springs for the past 24 years and it was such a shock trying to paint when you only have about 20 seconds or less before your paint is too dry! I must have got used to it though, because at the moment I am back in the UK visiting my Mum and having the opposite problem of getting bored while I wait for what seems like a lifetime for my paint to dry. I also brought a hand poured and dried set of some M. Graham paints with me…big mistake, they are almost back to tube consistency with all the damp 😂. I found that you definitely have to use 100% cotton paper in Colorado, cheaper papers just don’t hold onto that moisture as well. I also finely (and carefully) mist my work with water from time to time.

Beautiful painting and beautiful video sharing of your process - Thank you! I am a very new watercolor "artist" in Northwest Montana. I am doing Pleinairpril ... WAY above my skill level and April 1 was my first ever Plein Air experience. I have adjusted everything from kit to what I am painting to my expectations. Thankfully, I had decided to go small at 4x4 and finally realized I needed to "zoom in" and simplify. It was interesting to hear you speak to that as well. Even with gorgeous landscape, for me, I need to work on basics! Helpful information through the entire video - thanks!

Super fun, thank you! I get a little nervous doing plein air with other people around possibly stopping and all, but I love doing it so much. Being in the Colorado area myself ive learned the hard way as well how difficult and complex those mountain scenes with all the twigs and leaves and branches and rocks etc etc etc! can be to paint. You gave great advice about simplifying the shapes and not getting lost in the details, as well as changing the scene just a little here and there to suit your needs, all super helpful stuff. Was fun watching your pick-a-spot thought process haha cuz its very similar to my own when I do that. Looking to try and find a casual plein air group soon in NOCO, cuz i think id like to try and get more comfortable painting with a group like that, i think it probably allows you to feel more confident while doing plein air.

I’ve watched this video at least 5 times - you do such beautiful work! I purchased the same easel after seeing you and Steve Mitchell using it, and I love it! Can you share the brand and size of clip you use to clip your pad to the easel? I have ones that look the same but the orange part constantly pops off and is annoying lol. Love your work!

Magic, as always. Emily, does the Escoda Ultimo brush keep its point without hooking? I haven’t found a synthetic brush that doesn’t hook.

What specific colors do you have in your plein air palette? I am assuming a lot of earth colors (yellow ochre/raw sienna, burnt sienna, raw umber, burnt umber), some kind of green and yellow for trees and foliage, and some kind of blues for water. I have a small ceramic travel palette with room for 12 colors, and I am trying to figure out which colors to include...

Emily, Do you have special wet panel carrying case for your finished pictures? Do you carry those in your back pack also?

You don’t really need a wet panel case for watercolors because they dry so fast. I usually work on blocks, so the paintings stay protected inside.
