Hi friends and aspiring artists!
Today I want to review for you the Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper, and do a comparison between the cold pressed and hot pressed watercolor paper.
So far I only fell in love with cold pressed papers, and I honestly didn't expect too much from this paper, but maaaaan, it delivered!
I really like the feel of it. It keeps the color wet longer than other hot pressed papers I tried so far.
It has a very subtle texture, that's barely noticeable. It's just awesome!
I'll need to experiment with it some more, but my first impression is definitely positive. Arches don't let down (:
If you are interested in getting this paper, here's a link to Amazon (affiliate - you pay the same price, I get a commission):

I hope you enjoyed this video. As always, feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions for future videos.
And I'll see you soon,

@Alden Zachariah yup, been using instaflixxer for years myself :D
Hot press is fantastic for flowers or anything that tends more realistic and for glazing layers. To really take advantage, non-granulating paints can make very smooth washes and delicate wet-on-wet flower petals. I love texture too, but if I want to paint botanicals, hot press is the thing.

Thank you for the advice - I highly agree. I started doing still life lately - as you'll see in some upcoming videos (; And I really started to love hot-pressed for that purpose. I did a gourd painting that turned out fantastic thanks to the smooth texture!
What a great video. I'm glad you discovered the hot press paper with us instead of trying it first. Hearing your reactions real time was perfect! I've been wanting to try it. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this review. I just received my Paul Rubens hot pressed watercolour block, (it’s a journal style block.) I’ve never tried hot pressed & am very excited to use it and see how the paint reacts. Because I do a lot of pen & ink/illustration style of art, I knew I would have to be familiar with painting on this type of textured paper -er, I mean non-textured paper 🙃 As per usual I had to look through a plethora of videos before finding one, (yours,) which explains & demonstrates exactly what I needed to know. I think from now on I will just begin with your playlist before looking elsewhere. 🤗 Thanks again Liron.
Arches is great paper! You'll get spoiled using it, especially with wet on wet, my favorite! Arches has regular sized papers for watercolors... I think you got a panoramic size... Castle Aquarelle is great if you want to work with washes, etc. Their 300# is just about indestructible from what I saw on another KZread video... I'll have to find it again, if it's still around... A guy put it through a washing machine, scrubbed it, fed his dog on it & all sorts of funny things... After he washed it, he painted on it too! It seemed to be more of a test for toughness & indestructibility than anything else! I ordered some & am waiting to see how I like it too! The cotton & sized papers are a bit different to get used to, but once you've painted for a while & get that free-flowing painting going & you relax with it, you'll love it!

Agreed! I really developed my taste in watercolor paper. I may make a video on the topic soon (:
When I first got my Arches block I thought all the papers would be black XD I even contacted the store's costumer service haha... so embarrassing.....
@LironYan

Haha really?? Why did you think they would be black? 😂 And what did you end up doing?
@Toyon95
5 жыл бұрын
@@LironYan Because the first paper (that I guess is there to protect the watercolor block) is black and the glue around the edges is black! When I eventually teared away the first paper I saw that of course the real watercolor papers were white! The store had already contacted me by then but I was too embarrassed to admit my error so I didn't reply back XD
Arches hot pressed was exactly what I was looking for. Layers of watercolour and then coloured pencil is my thing. The strathmore is a good second, but arches is indeed majestic
FLUID 100 Hot Press is almost texture free. For botanical art it is AMAZING.
I love arches rough but have a soft spot for hot press, it's great for detailed stuff but it's not as good for trees or foliage but still workable
You should try Sennelier paper. It's very nice. I fell in love with it.

I definitely check it out, I played around with their paints and loved them too (:
I have been using Cold Pressed , but today I went back to Hot Pressed. I like to use a super clean rag to 1st wipe the paper over. With hot pressed you do not need much water, and colours can be built up over and over. It just needs a little more time to paint your picture, but!! the detail is a huge bonus, and it means it is 'forgiving' in a few ways. I'm staying with hot pressed now, it suits how my mind works and my hand when painting.

Great demo. Probably going to switch my watercolor paper to arches. But they have more than just the rough and smooth, i.e cold/hotpress...wondering about the teal block of paper ..its cold press and Ive noticed they have a couple different kinds.
@LironYan
6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm interesting. From what I see the teal is the same as the green (both cold press, same weight). I couldn’t find a difference. My favorite so far is definitely the green (:
Liron this is a very nice coincidence I just ordered a Saunders&Waterford HP last week and waiting it to be arrived. My favorite one is Saunders&Waterford (300 gr Rough). Just like you I was looking forward to experience it to see the differences and than I saw your video. You are always a step ahead :) By the way, I used Arches once at the stage and really loved it. It's a very good one except its very high prices.. Good one thank you.

Thank you for commenting (: Do you see any other advantages to using Saunders & Waterford over Arches (aside from the price difference)? I aspire to a style similar to yours, and will check it out if it works for you (:
7 жыл бұрын
I think Arches has a little bit higher quality than Saunders for my sense.. You can overwork on an area without damaging the surface even rubbing with tissue at high pressure. These are also valid for the Saunders by the way but as I said Arches is a little bit more durable but not double or triple just a little. And it stays damp longer I think. If you do few mistakes or feel good with your happy accidents you can get the same good result for both of them but Arches is for the people do a lot of corrections. As a result, for me, I can get the same good result with Saunders and with less cost. Otherwise they are almost equal to me. Another thing is, I think Arches has a lot of variety in size rather than Saunders. That's all. For the style work, I wish we could have an opportunity to come together and do some watercolor work. That would be very good but there is a very long distance and I'm not a self employment :) Keep up your good works.

baha börü Thank you, this could be great, maybe we can virtually collaborate in the future (: About the paper - these are great points, so I'll definitely look into that. I don't need as many corrections, and I'm pretty flexible in terms of the size of paper.

Liron that is what I told you about making correction on watercolor paper. Check this video about the progress. (The paper is Saunders) kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4mBmdWodbq6g9Y.html

I heard that lift-outs even after dry is easier than on cold press.
In a recent posting I mentioned that you had not really compared hot pressed and rough paper in past blogs. Sorry - I missed this one.

Thank you! (: I enjoy doing florals from time to time when I want to loosely play around with the paint 😁🎨
I noticed when I used both Arches cold press 140lbs and Arches Hot press 140lbs, the cold press was harder to line with pen than that hot press. However it was a lot easier to paint and blend.
@LironYan
7 жыл бұрын
Edgar Alvarado I have the exact same experience. Rough / cold press is really hard on pen (but pencil's okay). And it's so much easier to blend. I'm not 100% sure why, but I feel like the paint is absorbed more deeply into the paper, and that's where the blending happens. With hot pressed, it feels more like the paint stays on the paper's surface - which I personally hate =P and that leads to less blending action.

Edgar Alvarado I use hot press exclusively for ink painting/pen and ink illustration work. Maybe a few splashes of watercolor if needed. Hot press is great for detailed illustration and pen work, cold press is much better for traditional watercolor painting. I keep blocks of both in various sizes. That said, I would never use anything but Arches.
@nou257

i think this is exactly the reason why they're different and why paper companies create different types of watercolor papers to fit your needs, hot press is used for pens and more detailed work, and with cold press you let those textures do the blending for you most of the time.

I noticed that while the hot pressed completely dried the granulation (spots) faded and then smoothed, did anyone else who has this experience this? I know it depends on paint colors and brands but I love smooth texture color transition, please let me know, thanks for the review.

+cbudzyn I had a similar experience. They didn't disappear completely, but were much less visible.
Arches Rough win :D
Try using a lamp over your painting as I could not quite see :)
Have you noticed that the hot press paper is quite a bit more flimsy than the cold press paper, It’s not as thick and heavy.
@LironYan
3 жыл бұрын
I have noticed it on some occasions, though sometimes that's not the case (: The main challenge for me with hot press, is dealing with the different drying patterns and unevennes.
If you know IPA, it's just /aʁʃ/, not /aʁʃəz/. In French, an S on the end is silent except when followed by a vowel (a behavior called liaison). Kind of odd for me because 'Arsch' means 'ass'/'arse' in German, yet many think of it as a high-class sort of brand. Anyway I'd recommend Wiktionary and Google Translate for learning the correct pronunciation of words. IPA is very helpful because it shows the specific sounds instead of a generic letter like R which can represent very different sounds in different languages.
@LironYan
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you (: Being in Paris for a while now really helped me with that haha (though liasions still baffle me on many occasions). Today I know the right way to pronounce it. The funny thing is that now I notice how many other people also pronounce it incorrectly.
@raosprid
7 жыл бұрын
I'd guess the confusion is due to English having the same word with a different pronunciation. Plus even if people are aware it's French, we aren't taught French spelling rules. Wouldn't be surprised to hear someone say Arché (/aʁʃe/). The liaisons baffle me at times too: namely when a liaison does not occur despite appearing to fulfill all of the criteria. Being in Paris I expect you'll get a lot out of the opportunity. As I'm sure you know, the best way to learn a language is to use it with native speakers.
Cold paper I leave it in the fridge, hot paper I leave it in the sun.
I got a roll of Arches HP 140 Lbs and it is the WORSE paper I have ever used. As soon as you put water or any wash over it, it get a lot of tiny blotches, as if the pulp would absorb water irregularly. It gets absurdly dark in some spots and in others it change nothing. It is impossible to judge value because of that. The roll was really expensive to import and I have to save money for 6 months to be able to buy a new roll. Next time will stay away from Arches.

Hmmm, very interesting, I didn’t have that experience, but have used more cold press than hot press, and it makes a huge difference (I kind of hate hot press these days 😂 And I prefer Saunders Waterford these days better than Arches in general. Give cold press a try if you haven’t!
