I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my sweet lil doggo Olive and over 100 houseplants. Trick to switching plants that were rotting to leca is to not use a water reservoir for the first couple weeks! Just flush it once or twice a week like you would water the plant, getting the leca pretty saturated. Really helps stop the rot

Tip, kind of: Use a turkey baster to sop up overflowing drip trays. I water my plants the same way and like to soak them until the tray runs with water. After watering I walk through them all with a turkey baster and container and suck up most of the excess water to avoid wet feet :) works great when there's huge or annoying to move plants lol.

I have been doing a ton of leca research as I attempt to switch my pants over from soil. I have learned that you only want to use water for about a month and that some plants will shed all of their roots and make new ones when transitioning to leca. Good luck! :)

I had a FLF that suffered from root rot because of the soil it came in. I managed to save it (barely!) and I had to put it in this soil mixture: fox farm potting soil + coarse orchid bark + gritty succulent mix + horticultural charcoal + pumice/perlite. Sounds a bit overkill but I use it for all my plants and have never had any issues with overwatering or root rot since then. For my plants that like moisture, I mix in a bit of sphagnum moss into the soil for moisture retention. Hope it helps! Root rot is an awful issue to try to fix 😭

I’ve transferred 4 plants into LECA so far and all are doing exceptionally well: alocasia baginda, silver dragon, a struggling adansonii and a syngonium that got thrips. I waited a couple of weeks to add nutrients, when I saw roots popping out of the bottom and new leaves coming in. I think with the monstera you can reroot it in LECA but just stick to superthrive for now and don’t fill it up as much, a good tip I got from some semi hydro veterans is that you can mist the LECA when it’s getting a little dry.

My experience with leca has been quite successful so far. I can see your leca is pretty wet, I’m not an expert but when I repot in Leca, I make sure I let the leca to dry out completely and when the plant is giving me the indication that needs watering - droopy, soft, curly leaves- then I water again, making sure there’s a tiny bit of water sitting on the bottom so the leca observes it slowly - make sure no roots are touching the water that sit on the bottom. Again I’m not an expert, this is just how it works for me. I’d recommend to watch one of Halease’s videos, she has been experimenting with leca for a while now and she’s got some good tips. Congratulations on your new apartment, hope you’re settling down nicely! All your plants are lovely can’t wait to see more ❤️

For many aroid varieties, after cutting a section of the plant it is common practice to allow the cut section to dry out and “scab over” before reintroducing it to water because it risks fungal infection and root rot. You could cut those root sections, dip them in cinnamon and allow the ends to scab over while rigging the plant’s posture in such a way that only the white roots are exposed to water. It’s a lot of work and difficult to do, but that’s the only thing I can think to recommend without just cutting out the old roots and attempting to re-root it.

Fern, I kept the monstera Peru in leca and it took a while (the entire growing season) but it finally put out roots and I got 2 new leaves last month. You did the right thing cutting those black/old roots. Try to lower the water in the pot, so that the top layer of leca gets to dry out. They are very hardy plants, it will be okay. And also don’t pot it deep in the pot. Good luck!

Dang Peru is so tough! I cut mine up and tried rerooting pieces in several mediums. The one in leca did ok for a while and grew a new leaf and then rotted... now they are all in water. I always say if some roots are growing in leca you are doing ok. Just keep cutting back the rotting ones.

I have pretty much all my plants in LECA - for my hoyas, if they have root rots, I cut all the roots out (and stem if necessary), wash the stem with dish soap and reroot in water under grow light and with a heat mat (that’s for the UK - u might not need it). When it s all rooted, I transfer to LECA. Haven’t lost a hoya yet but it’s only my experience and is probably not correct.

How do you keep track of which plant you've watered recently and which one you didn't? I know it's better to go around and feel the soil of each plant but when you have so many, how does it work??

I love your videos sm they're v calming :) I think your chain of hearts' new leaves are small because they're not receiving much light? Hope that could be helpful. Edit: with the monstera Peru, I'd cut off the bottom dodgy roots off too. To me only leaving the healthy growing ones is preventing any spread of potential rot!
