But what is the difference between a single and a double check valve?

Nice video but could you explain why the garden tap requires the double check valve (as opposed to single)?

Hi there. A double check valve is recommended for outside taps as it provides better protection - especially in case of negative water pressure. For example, if you’re filling up a paddling pool and leave your hosepipe in the water, should negative pressure occur, water from the paddling pool could contaminate your internal water system, if a double check valve isn’t installed. Hope that helps :)

@@wessex-water Thanks for replying. So basically there is less chance of it failing because both check mechanisms would have to break? Just one other thing - does every house require a check valve in / after the stop cock, or is it only some homes like flats with shared mains supply?

@@mrdjbrand Check valves provide protection for a range of circumstances, such as preventing water from washing machines contaminating supply. It is not always down to the type of property or whether a property is on a shared water supply. If you are in any doubt we'd recommend you contact a WaterSafe approved plumber for further advice.
