Self watering planters diy using water bottles.
If the crime rate in your area is moderate to high, please do this in a way that people from outside will not see the bottles in your pots. Or ask a friend (if you have one :| ) to water the plants for you and check that everything is ok in your home.
Having the bottles visible together with lights off is a clue that you are away from home.
Burglars will look for some of these clues to decide which home to target.

Thank you! I've been trying to think of a way to water my plants when I'm gone! lol. I knew there was a way to do it with plastic bottles but wasn't sure what or how it would work. Can't wait to try this!
I did this while on vacation for two weeks. Not only did my plants survive, but when I came back I had plants sprouting that I had just planted before I left. Now I have three mango seedlings, two tomato plants, and numerous others that are flourishing because of this method. Thank you!

I tried this and all kinds of expensive water drippers and the water went right through the soil and all over my floor. Tried several setups including the drip rope. Nothing works properly
I am so curious why 400+ people took the time to give this a thumbs down 🤣 this video was informative and straight to the point, whats not to love? 👍🏼

Many things. Too complicated, they don’t have the tools, his voice/accent, not what they were looking for, etc. People forget that 1.4M people is a huge amount of people. I enjoyed the video, found it very helpful, but that doesn’t mean everyone else will. I’m just lucky I had the materials available.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
This is way better than water globes and cheaper. Tip: You can use a thumbtack to make the holes and it works just the same.
Great solution for plant watering while away from home. I will be trying this straight away. Thank you!
Thank you, will definitely give that a try - looks like a great solution
I need this for this summer. Thank u.
Great idea for easily putting the tiny holes in the cap. I can't wait to try this one. Good video
After so many videos.... finally something easy that I can do...
I didn't know you could do this, that's awesome! Thanks so much for this info :D My plants will be saved this summer!

A great solution to my problem. Thanks for the tip.
this is the best idea for keeping plants hydrated that I have seen. I am surely going to use this method.
I did for a week even before I watched this video. It worked for my plant that I wanted to survive and grow.
We went on a 11 day long trip and it helped the plant grow...I love it
Thanks. That's a very great way of watering plants when away and be rest assured that they are well taken care of in absence too!
Absolutely brilliant! I am going to 2 festi's in a couple of weeks and really don't want to have to ask someone else to water my plants. Now I have the solution! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your wonderful and so simple advice! I just looove it! I am going on a vacation in a few days and I was concerned about some of my plants. I will follow your advice and let you know how they are doing when I come back.
thank you for the visual, simplicity and clarity.
thank you for the confirmation! I am going away for 10 days and was wondering if this would work...I am going to try this now and will at least have peace of mind knowing someone out there has tried it and made it work. Thank you again!
Thanks for posting this. Very useful to see how to makeholes in lid without using a drill. I don't own one so wasn't able to use this way of watering my plants till I found your video. Thank you
Thanks for the tip - it works, but some bottles are better than others I think. As an experiment I tried 0.5 litre water bottles in 2 baby carrot seedling boxes (18 inches by 9 inches and 9 inches deep), left for 4 days (3 nights) on my balcony which gets the sun in the morning and early afternoon. I live in a warm climate, in the Philippines. I put 2 bottles in each box, each bottle had 2 small holes near the centre of the cap. One bottle had a shallow neck, maybe 1cm long, the other maybe 3cm. in each container. The longer neck bottles were about 75% used up whilst the shallow necks had hardly drained at all (if at all). When I removed the bottles the soil at depth was lovely and moist and the seedlings were in perfect condition in both containers. We are going away again this week and I'll repeat, with the longer necked bottles; this time I'll try 4 holes versus 2 holes - I'll report back here if I get any useful results. BTW I think the softer bottles buckle too easily and inhibit the osmosis effect - I had soft bottles on 2 baby shrubs and hardly any water was used, maybe a few cc at most. Cheers.
Thank you for this tip! Will definitely set up for my mini vacation! I 🙌🏼
Thanks for the very easy-to-follow video. Will try this for my new balcony garden!
I went to Home Depot to buy watering gloves before leaving for my 2 weeks trip. Luckily they only have it online. So I went home and found this video. Thank you so much.
Going on vacation next month and looked up how to water plants while away. It led me here. Now my girlfriend doesn't have to worry about all her plants dying. Thanks!!

Thank you for the nice comment and have a great time! :)
A very good way to normally water plants in the garden (not in pots), especially young plants is to use a normal size plastic bucket and drill a hole about 4mm in the bottom at one side. Fill the bucket with water and sit it next to the plant. The water will very slowly empty into the soil and give the plant a very deep watering. Plants love deep watering because that's where their roots are. A deep watering is much better than a few shallow waterings, especially in summer when shallow waterings will mostly evaporate.
Genius! What an amazingly simple and practical invention. I'll let you know how my plants fare this week!
Excellent methods! Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the information! I am going to need this later!
Your explanations were simple and clear. Thank you so much for an informative and well presented video!

Great use of water bottles and the plants will never get thirst while we are away to vacation.
Wonderful idea! Thank you. Will do this today!
Good idea. Thanks for that. So simple, but very effective. 👏👍
Great simple and free idea. Thanks man.
Simple & easy. Thank you. Don't forget to pull your plants into the shade, if the weather is hot it can almost boil the water otherwise!
Now I don't have to trouble my neighbours to water my plants when I'm away on short trips - great, thanks so much!
Thank you I'm going to do this tomorrow. I was worried about my plants dying in my absence.
Thank you my man! This is exactly what I was look for, nice work

I put two 1 gallon buckets filled with water next to my plants, put some string between the buckets and of my pots (peppers and basils). Covered the buckets with plastic bags and went on vacation. Came home a little over a month later and the plants were still thriving, the peppers even flowering.
It worked, thanks bro God bless u, for all who are with me God bless u too

I was sort of hoping to see someone who succeeded for such a long time. Planning to go away for around two months but don't want my beloved indoor plants to suffer. Did you put bigger recipients in all of them or was a bottle enough?
@IONHowTo
4 жыл бұрын
2 months is a long time. Depends on your weather. If you have 10-20L containers use gravity to water them or a timer.
@theodye929
4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexzyaBB it is a long time, and I guess it also depends what plants you have. my christmas cactus and amaryllis both survived with 0.5L bottles, my cyclamen wilted completely with a 1.5L... I hadn't expected to be away for so long!
Nice solution. I think it can be improved further by adding a cotton wick in the bottle extending into the pot soil in a circle around the plant. More uniform moisture that way. I plan to do some experiments on this
@IONHowTo

Vinny Chirayil thanks, try it but compare multiple ways with a control plant. If the soil is good, the moisture should spread thru the whole pot. Or at leas most of the pot without extra help.

Super idea. I look forward to trying it!
Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful information.
Thank you for the video 👍 This method is based on so called "Capillary action" and works very well so the sun doesn't have to warm the bottle. I gave water with this kind of method to my grape tree for 6 weeks. I just used bigger 10 liter bottles. Tree survived 2 months without my irrigation.

Very good suggestion. Will try. Thank you.
I used this way to water when I went to Stockholm 1 1/2 weeks. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical when I was driving. But not only had the plants survived - they had grown so much and nicely that it looked like a small jungle in the kitchen. I was so happy, completely lyrical! Such a superior and simple system - Thank you for sharing the tip 🙏🏻. I have shared this video with all my flower friends 🌸.

Nice trick!! Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Really helped with my plants. btw.: the needle doesn't have to be hot. Just lay the bottle cap on something soft, like old cardboard, and hit the needle with a hammer through the plastik into the soft thing below.
Thank you, great idea!!
This is a fantastic idea. I do something similar with the squeezy sauce bottles but the water flows too quickly. I am doing this for my next holiday as I have just planted a heap of new plants and so don't want them to be struggling with the Aussie heat.
Amazing. It's effective!
Great idea!! Now I will be able to relax while on vacation knowing my plants will be well hydrated.
