Water/Methanol Injection Temperature Effects - MINI Cooper S

This video is to show the effects of water/meth injection on a forced induction car, the example in this case is a 2006 MINI Cooper S. The specs are as follows:
• Supercharger (stock Eaton M45) with 15% reduction pulley [approx. 15.5 lbs boost]
• Custom Tuned
• AquaMist HFS-3 System with a 90% Methanol / 10% Water Mixture
Car is tuned to run 93 octane fuel and IS tuned for the W/M .

    I've been really looking into the water/meth injection...and it was either this or a gp intercooler..but now it seems like that just because the intercooler is bigger..won't make a big difference of it being cooler...so thanks for making me come to my conclusion of getting water/meth :D

    The GP intercooler is a very nice upgrade and its on my list of upgrades also (although I think it will do nothing for me except look really cool). But the GP intercooler is very expensive and if you are looking for bang for the buck go with the water meth, an injector duty cycle unit is the best choice, but if that is out of the price range any kit is better than none.

    Hey I have a couple questions, but first off thanks for the video. I have a pretty mildly modded mini(all bolt ons and cams without tune) and my car ran a 16sec 1/4 when I first got it 2 years ago I ran a 14.7 but it was completely stock even the pulley. I watched my intake temp on my torque app and read 172 degrees just after staging before tossing my phone to passenger seat. So question 1 can you confirm the iat sensor the car has that my obd reader is pulling from is after the ic? I couldn't imagine it's data being useful at pre intercooler. Question 2, is there a way to set up your meth kit or maybe aem or snow kits to allow you to purge some meth into the system to cool it for examples when racing from a complete stop like at a drag strip? Right now with my ddm works intercooler diverter and intake if I'm cruising for a while I can temps within 10-15 degress of ambient air temps. Would this kit just make that happen quicker or drop it even more so that its even less of a difference.

    superfly1842The factory IAT/Boost Pressure sensor is in the intake manifold track. I installed aftermarket sensors about 4 inches before and after the intercooler in the horns. I will try to shoot another video showing where everything is mounted soon. To answer your question about manually making the w/m system engage, the short answer is yes this could be done. BUT you have to be very careful as to not put to much in there, and personally I dont see the point, the moment the car goes to the preset boost or duty cycle to engage the w/m the temp will start to drop. RAPIDLY as you can see in the video. Yes any of the kits will cause the temp to drop much faster than just the forced air that is going over the intercooler, AND the alcohol is acting as a knock suppressor (basically 116 octane fuel while spraying w/m). If you have more question feel free to ask them I am happy to share my knowledge.

    Daniel Cooper Did you have to pull the horn on the supercharged side to tap the sensor? From what I understand you need to pull the supercharger to get that horn off, which seems to be a whole lot of work for a gauge. I'm actually looking at the one by glowshift, it has two needles on one gauge face, each temp sensor turns it's own needle. I think it will fit the retro styling. Thanks so much for your reply!

    Matthew Menze NO, I did not pull the Supercharger it is not needed, you can remove the horns without removing the SC. with the hood open and facing the engine, the one on the right is really easy, the other one on the top of the SC is much harder as you have to remove the intake to get to the bolts. Like everything else on our cars, its not super hard, but you have to remove things to get to what you want. • @ccooper2654

    @ccooper2654

    9 жыл бұрын

    Matthew Menze It can but its a Puzzle getting everything in and out. You have to loosen the intake manifold, take 3 of the four bolts out of the SC horn and it will cook to the side about 3/4 inch and it can be wiggled out. OR and much easier just drill in place, grease the bit, drill till it almost breaks through, clean and re-grease the bit drill through, clean up grease the tap and tap it out. I personally did not do this as I had the horns off, but I have done it on other cars.

    Adam Dama it's all about pressure ratios. If you can cool that pressurized charge down, it's the same volume of air, but less pressure. So the supercharger doesn't take as much hp to compress it. Roots styled blowers might take 10hp to make 4psi, 25 to make 8, and 45 to make 12.

    I have been looking into water/meth and I went on the Mini forum and someone said this will NOT increase power on a mini... is that true? I'm thinking he is false especially after seeing your temps drop that much. I was just thinking about going with a CAI, Electric water pump, 19% Pulley, Water/Meth and Dyno tune. Why 90/10%? It seems that most people go with full Meth for easier tune/power gains as to mixing and testing. I am debating 100% Meth, 50/50, or full water. It seems that water is only useful if you can get the engine to heat up a lot then increase timing. What kind of power increase do you think the kit brought you? And is the HFS-3 better than the HFS-2? I'm kind of lost on these kits on a R53 as the information seems limited. Thanks!

  • @ccooper2654

    @ccooper2654

    9 жыл бұрын

    I would have to say that the w/m itself does not increase power; but that being said it enables you to do more with what you have, you mentioned the 19% pulley, in the upper RPM range you are creating a lot of heat, w/m will help keep that in check. Thus reducing the temp, and making it where you can use all the power the additional boost creates without the computer having to pull the timing back so that you do not have detonation. You can also tune for a more advanced ignition curve, with the w/m. But that all being said w/m is not like nitrous, on its own it will not add power, only enable to use the other power adders that you have to the full extent. I will never heat soak my intercooler no matter how hot is outside as the w/m will always pull the temp back down. Hope that info helps.

    +C Cooper (c0op3r) Are you sure it will not increase power? Other manufacturers like SNOW PERFORMANCE state that even installing AFTER an existing chip tuning (like APR Stage 1) a car like an Audi A3/S3 will gain power due to higher octane level (Audi motor management will adapt to it and increase power) ..... So what do you think about that claim?

  • @ccooper2654

    @ccooper2654

    7 жыл бұрын

    No W/W by itself will not increase the power. BUT with W/M you get a cooler charge and can advance timing, which will increase power. So you have to tune for it. If you do not tune for W/M what you get is a car that will have extremely repeatable power, as the cars ECU is not pulling timing when its hot,. Now you tune for it you can add timing (therefore power) but you need to be careful, because running that tune without W/M you will have detonation and high EGT. SO a failsafe is required.

    Well you can adjust when it comes on and the pulse rate, in the controller. So you could fine tune it for exactly what you want for your car. I can tell you I have a friend that does track day events and set to spray on any boost he will go through a gallon of meth, in one track run, but that is extreme. I personally use 3/4 of a gallon of meth to about 3 tanks full of fuel, (fuel tank is about 12 gallons).

  • @tdawg719
    @tdawg7197 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure how you would accurately gauge the intake temp difference as you're not supposed to install the nozzle before the AIT sensor. Also most of the work that water meth does happens in the combustion chamber. In addition you stated you run a 90% meth mix, which isn't ideal. Its common knowledge that the best gains are seen at a near 50/50 mix of water meth. More isn't always better.

  • @Carguylogan

    @Carguylogan

    tdawg719 50/50 is the best compromise between cost and power. Pure water injection COSTS power because water doesn't burn but instead takes up space where air/fuel could be. People who use methanol injection for serious applications like dedicated race cars almost always use 100% methanol because it provides the most power even though water has twice the LHV.
