Water Heater Troubleshooting - Pilot Won't Stay Lit | Repair and Replace

No hot water? If the pilot flame in your water heater keeps on going out or won't stay lit, then it could be a problem with the thermocouple or thermal cutoff switch. In this episode of Repair and Replace, Vance shows how to troubleshoot the pilot flame in a water heater with a conventional gas valve. This includes testing the thermocouple voltage with a multimeter and checking the thermal switch for continuity. This can help troubleshoot a water heater that is not heating water.
In an open circuit test, a healthy thermocouple should produce 20 - 30 millivolts DC. If the reading is under 20 millivolts, then the thermocouple should be replaced. Learn how to replace the thermocouple in this video: • Water Heater Thermocou...

    Actually, my valve failed due to the electromagnets. One shorted a wire from the lead pin that energizes the electromagnet. Pilot lght would light, but go out as soon as you release the dial. Power from the thermocouple was fine. Re-soldered that wire, used electrical tape to limit future shorts, and whammo, hot water again! But I wouldn't suggest anyone disassembles the actual gas valve, like me, unless you are beyond careful, handy with tools, and quite desperate for hot water!

    5:32 I had an airflow issue when I moved into my my house a decade ago. Something like 1/10 times, when the main burner ignited it would blow out the pilot light. It would blow out almost every day. I happened to be watching it when it happened one time. I fashioned a small piece of sheet metal and put it between the pilot light and the outside air. There was nothing between the pilot and the main burner, so the main burner ignites, but the piece of metal stops the turbulence that was blowing out the pilot. It's worked just fine for the last 10 years. This video didn't exist back then so I didn't know about the vent in the middle. I'll check that today.

    Thanks for sharing! Never would have thought to use a piece of sheet metal to help shield the pilot flame from additional turbulence. Airflow problems can be difficult to narrow down and some creativity is often needed.

    Thanks. This is great video! I basically followed the suggested troubleshooting procedure. One situation about my gas heater, it'll heat only once after the manual light on (pilot lighting), and it then shuts all the gas off once the set temperature is reached, so I don't get a standing pilot light... Tried to replace the thermocouple and get reading around 21mV at open condition. Also the continuity check shows good connection. Does it indicate a faulty gas valve? We're still able to have hot water so far, but only by manual lighting on...Please help, thanks!

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful. If the thermocouple voltage was low it would shut off the gas before the water heater was able to heat. The fact that it heats up and gives you hot water before shutting off the pilot, points to the gas valve being faulty. The gas valve itself is difficult to troubleshoot and repair, so you might need to install a new valve.

    Hi Eric, thank you for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful! What you're describing is a faulty gas valve. The gas valve has 2 valves in it which will control the flow of gas. The pilot and thermocouple is connected to the master valve, it will allow gas to both the pilot and the burner (if needed). The dial controls the burner and when the conditions are right, it will open up the valve to let gas into the burner. For the burners to work both valves need to open. If nothing happens when you switch it to on, then its likely that the valve to the burner is not opening.

    Thanks for watching. For the pilot to stay lit, the thermocouple must be producing enough voltage so it's worth verifying with a multimeter. As well corrosion between the thermocouple threads and the gas valve can also cause issues, so this can be cleaned with alcohol and a q-tip. If the voltage is good, and the connection is solid, then it could be an issue with the gas valve.

When I reset the unit by pressing the knob in the pilot position and pushing the pilot igniter I can turn on the burner but it will burn for about 5-7 min then turn off and resume the 5 blinks. Does this mean I’ll have to replace the whole unit ?? Thanks in advance.

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful! The fact that the pilot does stay lit is showing that it likely is a problem with the gas valve or the electronics inside of it. The gas valve itself can be replaced. www.amresupply.com/catalog/Gas-Controls-647749-PP2D If you're not comfortable working with gas fittings then that's something best handled by a technician.

    Thanks for watching. You may still want to check the voltage of the new thermocouple. This will verify if the pilot flame is hitting the right portion of it or if the flame is hot enough. A weak pilot flame might also prevent the thermocouple from warming up properly. If the flame is weak then it's possible that the pilot orifice is plugged. We don't have a specific video showing this but you will likely need a pin to clear out the orifice. Note that even if the thermocouple is producing voltage in an isolated test, it doesn't always mean the voltage is getting through. Sometimes the connection between the thermocouple and the gas control valve can become corroded. This can be cleaned with vinegar and a q-tip. Try that out first before replacing the gas valve.

    Hi Gustavo, thank you for watching. If the pilot flame won't stay lit, and you have a new burner assembly then its possible that there is a bad connection between the thermocouple and the gas control valve. Unscrew the thermocouple from the gas control valve, you can use a q-tip soaked in alcohol to help clean up any mineral buildup or corrosion that might be on the valve. If there is any interference the the voltage produced by the thermocouple won't make it to the valve.

    Thanks for watching. Without seeing all the details it is hard to say. It is best to make sure there is proper airflow into the room, (if there is a door to the room, make sure there is space under the door. If there is no intake of air there will be negative pressure and it can cause a back draft. As well make sure there is nothing restricting any of the venting inside or outside.

    My pilot wouldn’t stay lit, so I replaced the thermocouple. The pilot will light and the heater will come on, but it shuts off as soon as a wire is touched, like when replacing the outer door. I retested by just touching a wire with my finger too, same result. My thermal cutoff has continuity, but is it going bad or is it a wiring issue?

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching. If the thermal switch is tripping then you should be able to tell based on a continuity test. If it runs fine and only shuts off if you touch the switch or door, then it's possible that the wire connectors are not making good contact. In any case make sure that there is no corrosion on the wire terminals, and that they sit securely on the thermal switch. If that doesn't help, then install a new switch.

    Thanks for watching. If it works intermittently, it could be an airflow issue, backdrafting or still a problem with the thermocouple as outlined in this video. • @marogtkid08

  • @AmreSupply

    11 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching. If the TCO does not have continuity when tested, then it is faulty and it needs to be replaced. If the TCO has continuity when tested, but still continues to trip, then it is likely an issue with the ventilation. If it trips it will shut off the pilot each time.

    Hi Penny thank you for watching. If you replaced the thermocouple and the burner assembly and the pilot still won't stay lit then its possible that there is corrosion between the thermocouple and the gas valve. Unscrew the thermocouple, take a Q-tip, soak it in rubbing alcohol, and clean the inside threads on the gas valve, then clean the end of the thermocouple. Any corrosion will reduce the voltage and can cause the pilot to go out. As well make sure that there is a constant source of air to the water heater. For example if the switch says 270F or 270D, it's likely referring to the temperature at which it cuts power.

    Thanks for watching. Sometimes corrosion can interfere with how the thermocouple screws into the gas valve. If there is corrosion on the gas valve threads then it will reduce the voltage. This corrosion can be cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol or vinegar. As well you can test to see if the new thermocouple is producing the right voltage. If it isn't then it's possible that it's not positioned correctly or that the pilot orifice is plugged.

  • @AmreSupply

    Thanks for watching. First test the thermocouple voltage based on the steps in this video. Replace the thermocouple if necessary. If the thermocouple is good, then clean the connection between the thermocouple and the gas valve. This can sometimes prevent the flow of electricity, preventing the pilot from staying lit. Other than that, it could be an airflow issue as outlined in the last half of this video.

    Thanks for watching. If your water heater isn't making as much hot water as it used to, it could be one of several things. The thermostat (on the gas valve) can wear out and lose sensitivity over time. This means that it thinks the tank is hotter than it actually is, which would cause the water in the tank to never reach as hot of a settings. This can be difficult to test, so the only way to know is to install a new gas valve to see if it changes things. Sediment or rust can act as an insulator at the bottom of the tank, preventing heat from the burner from heating up the tank. Sometimes flushing the tank can help with this but there are no guarantees. As well the dip tube is plastic. If it breaks off, then cold water will be sent into the top of the tank which will make some of the water colder than normal. The dip tube normally pushes new cold water into the bottom of the tank so it can be heated by the burner.

    If the thermal switch reads 0 on ohms is that the same as if it where an open loop?

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching. The thermal switch is a non-load component. It simply provides a path for electricity to pass through. A reading of 0 ohms means that there is no resistance and electricity will flow unrestricted. Anything between 0 and 1 ohms is perfectly normally for a switch. Open loop, OL or a reading of - - - - - - means there is no path for electricity to flow through. These concepts are visualized in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m32Fk5avhNu8e5M.html

    @@Thisisjs96 If its an electronic valve then you have a thermopile instead of a thermocouple. If the voltage gets up to 730 then you've verified that the gas supply works and that the thermopile is functioning. When you light the pilot its a manual bypass that allows gas to flow through the control valve into the pilot. Still that doesn't rule out a failure inside of the gas control. Its likely that the ECO (which is a fuse) tripped as a safety. This will happens if the tank overheats. If the ECO trips then the gas control valve will need to be replaced. This is difficult to test so if you are unsure then its best to call a plumber.

    My pilot light won't stay lit. I tested the thermocouple and it read 19.3 millivolts while the pilot was being held on. I removed it and tested it with a light and it went to 24 millivolts. I also had a new spare thermocouple and when I installed it it only read 15 millivolts and has the same issue.

  • @AmreSupply

    @AmreSupply

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching. If the thermocouple is producing ~20 millivolts then it should be ok. One thing to check is to see if there's any corrosion at the connection between the thermocouple and the gas control valve as this can reduce the voltage at the valve itself. Unscrew the thermocouple and use a q-tip soaked in vinegar to clean the connection on the control valve as well as the threads on the thermocouple, then reconnect and try again.

    I bought this water heater kzread.infoUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.
