I am probably best known for my water drop photography. I love it, many of you love it so it's likely that every now and again it will pop up on my channel and today is one of those occasions. I now have a series of videos dedicated to water drop photography:

In this photography tutorial I answer a question many of you have asked me and that is what do you add to liquid to give it that glass like effect. Well the secret is xanthan gum and I'm going to show my technique for mixing up the perfect water drop photography solution.
Like I said before you can use various liquids but I find you gain greatest control by using xanthan gum.
Xanthan gum can be bought very cheaply form health food stores and will last you a long time because you only need a very small amount to thicken the water..
You want to start with around one pint of warm or hot water. Xanthan gum really does not like dissolving in water so using warm water helps it along. Take about half a teaspoon of Xanthan gum and sprinkle it into the water. Stir well and then wait. Much of the gum will stick together and refuse to dissolve but I find leaving it overnight allows the maximum amount to dissolve.
If there are any lumps left in the mixture I will sieve them out. If your mixture is really thick you just need to water it down to get the required consistency.
Consistency
You can play around with this but you do not want it to be too thick or it will not come out the dropper at the right time because it will stick in the nozzle. A consistency like melted butter or olive oil is around where you need to be.
This is then my base mixture for a shoot. During the shoot I will the add colour to the liquid in the form of food colouring to provide different types of shots and the addition of milk will add an interesting opacity to the liquid that can really add some extra interest to the shot.
This then pours into the SplashArt reservoir ready to create some beautiful water drop collisions.
I tend to go all out and make extra mixture to fill my water bath, but again, you can experiment with this.

JUST what I was looking for! Your work is amazing, both your shots and how you explain stuff. Thank you.
You're awesome as usual, Adam! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Just got the Splash Art, already got the gum and food colouring so can't wait to give it a go. Your tutorials have helped a lot.
Thanks for the tutorial. It was very interesting watching one of your older videos. I have been following your channel for a while, and you have certainly grown in your presentation. Cheers.
Thanks for your tutorials. Extremely helpful.. Much appreciated Thanks Sir Good Day
The gum idea is extremely useful. Thanks for the suggestion

Hi Adam, It's wonderful watching your creative videos, never tried anything like this before, where could you buy a kit for this kind of photography.
Great explanation
Love your videos - where is your videos for editing the images? I can't find it.
OK. Thank you for the videos and tips. Is this half spoon for 1 liter of water?
Hi Adam I love your videos and have just got into Water drop photography. I have a pluto dropper and it works really well. The problem I have is the photo isn't fully sharp. I'm shooting at 1/200 F11 iso 640 and have my flash set to 1/64. I have gotten my focus right pre shooting. Should I go to F16?
awsome tutorial, where can one buy water drop collider ?
Well, that is as amazing. I always assumed it was just water into water, how wrong was I!?
super ! thanks sharing tips with us. just received my pluto trigger+arm+valve and learning how to use it. all pluto tutos show dull droplets over dull backgrounds. How do you lighten the splash (two speedlite on each side ?) and background (speedlight lays on table towards background) ? i have a d750+godox xpro transmitter+2xgodox V1+ad200 pro+ad400pro with octabox. does it help ?
Adam, what is the best set up to drop the drops into if you know what I mean?
hello a question at what distance you hold the arm that holds the valve on the surface of the water
Hi Adam, great videos. Can I ask the best position for camera. I.e level with dish or shooting slightly down onto dish. Thanks in advance.

I like to get level. It's subjective though.
I vouch for adding a little glycerin to the xanthum and mixing before adding to your water. Always works :)
Do you use the same mixture: water, Xanthan and milk in the tank of the valve as well as in the tank of reception
Do you use the same mixture on the bottom container or just the dropper?
Do you use the mix in the drip tray or just the dripper valve container? Great vids. I’ve learned a lot.

I use the mixture in the dropper and put about an 8 to 1 mixture of water to gum mix in the tray. I'm not the author of these videos, just relaying what has worked for me. You only need about 2 inches of water in your tray. I use a 90 mm macro lens for up close shots.
if I don't have a water dropper what else can I use? would a plastic bag with a small hole in it be alright? (thank you very much by the way)
Amazing! Excellent tutorial! I'm a biginner and I'm going to use pluto Valve to meke my drops collisions shots! I am afraid to use xanthan gum inside the valve .. could it obstruct the valve?

Carlo Cascone any luck! Just picked up the Pluto valve.
Thanks for the great information video. One question about the mixture. Do you use it only in the dropping liquid or in both liquids

I also want to know this
Which lens you use
I use Algin(at) for my Drops. Also better to mix it with water. Are you able to produce multiple valve drops with your solution ?

Sounds interesting. I mix it up, seive it and then dilute it down again.
Do you use xanthan gum in your catch pan as well? I'm just starting out in water drop photography. I'm using the StopShot to do my drops and am have a blast doing it. Your videos are extremely helpful and I am getting some great shots and learning a lot about editing also, through your videos. Thanks again.

Wanted to register for one of your courses but i am in usa and hard to find the setup you are using. Can i get "pluto trigger" to learn ?
What is a cheaper alternative to a water dropper?
I use a niko810 with a combination of zeiss 100 mm macro. I am unable to get the sharpness even though I use a combination of a local flash and Profoto lights . What should be the ideal distance between droplet and the camera .. I shoot at f16 / f22 in bulb mode . Pls help
Sir is there any other substitute for xanthan gum
Hello, I'm sorry but I didn't understand (I know very little English-American) if you use the mixture obtained only as a liquid to drop or do you also use it in the container where the drop falls or, in the container, do you use water or something else? Thanks
very nicely explained.i have 2 questions 1) alternate of xantham gum(did i spell correct)? 2)ok we did a great water droplet shoot. then does it sell? does it reap back of our hard work? it might b a silly question.

+Manish Arora You can add sugar. That thickens it a little. Make sure you wash out any drop machine you might be using though afterwards or it will all get sticky. I'd stick with the xantham gum though. I sell water drop prints yes.

Love this help. can you send me a copy, much appreciated.
Hello, question for you. I'm having motion blur on my waterdrop shots. It happens when I use either 1 or 2 speedlights at lowest setting. Any idea why this is. If u need more info from me no problem just let me know. Would love the help.

Hi Eric. If your flash power is on 1/32, 1/64 or 1/128 then the flash won't be the problem. Set your shutter speed to the flash sync speed and make sure youre at f/8, f11 or f16. Use the ISO to get the exposure right. You might still lose a tiny amount of sharpness on the edge of any crowns you create but that is due to depth of field rather than motion.
I've got a Canon EOS 100d with a 18-55mm macro lens, what settings should I use as I don't have an external Flash?
@Firstmanphotography
7 жыл бұрын
+Gohan Datta It will be tough. Put a nice bright lamp very close to the water bath and then use a shutter speed of around 1/500 and boost your ISO to get the exposure balanced. It's normally the flash that freezes the action rather than the shutter speed.

No way.... 1/500 is too slow for water drop photography, it doesn't even freeze the normal motion like running man or bird in flight. A flash is a crucial equipment for high speed photography. The £30 Yongnuo560 flash has 1/20000 T.5 flash duration at minimum power (1/5000 T.1), that is the kind of shutter speed which can freeze the action for water droplet collision.
Hello, great explanation. I use Splash Art but my water doesn't jump enough. what is the secret of that please? I tried everything, made the drop bigger, elevated the tank. same thing. put a deeper base same thing, added rinse as you said ones, in both first the tank and then the base same thing actually worst, I had to wait for the bubbles :(

I got the same problem, can't get a good altitude.
I mix my xanthan gum in a small amount of rubbing alcohol before adding it to the water, never any lumps. ;o)

what's a small amount of rubbing alcohol and in what proportion roughly to the xanthan gum please?
none of your links work any more for the tutorials
Can you do a water drop without flash video?
@Firstmanphotography
7 жыл бұрын
+EnderDude7 Productions It would be very similar to what I have already done. You could use a couple of normal lights. Get them in close, bump up your ISO and set your shutter speed nice and high. They won't look quite as good as with flash but you will still get some nice images.
