Tucson has been in a water crisis for decades. Not having a Salt River Project like the Phoenix metro area to draw on, Tucson pumped a lot of groundwater, until the Tucson basin was nearly depleted. In a desperate effort, the City bought the agricultural area west of town known as Avra Valley. They shut down the farming that had been done there since the 1930s, and instead pumped the water around the Tucson Mountains into Tucson. But, that was a short term solution. The CAP was absolutely essential for Tucson's survival and growth, which was still relatively slow compared to the Salt River Valley. With the CAP now in danger of being drastically reduced, Tucson will have to draw upon it's banked CAP water and pray the drought doesn't lack much longer. (It started about 2000). Tucson, to it's credit, has learned long ago how to deal with limited water supplies, while cities of the Salt River Valley are somewhat behind the curve in dealing with the problem, but are catching up fast. I don't think either area will dry up and blow away, but the lifestyle may change, and the lack of the green lawns and trees may raise average temperatures even more as time goes on and the "thermal dome" effect gets worse. So, the question may be "How much heat can we take" before we give up and move to more moderate climates? (Confession: I grew up in Tucson and moved to the Salt River Valley in 1969; so have a fairly good handle on the growth of both areas)

There is not enough ground water to allow continued development and existing agricultural practices. Just look at Rio Verde to the north and the loss of reserves in the Colorado River effects on farmers with water rights. Domestic water use is low on the list of major water use compared to agriculture. Our state law makers have allowed foreign interests to freely pump our ground water to grow crops that are exported because in their countries they are not allowed to be grown due to their lack of water. Not exactly representative of the people they serve are they.

2:02 For further clarification, Tucson's urban sprawl has increased beyond our natural water capabilities. It's no longer renewable because agriculture has increased so much. Agriculture has increased so much, because the state doesn't cap/fine water use (yet), so mostly foreign owned farms moved here from CA to purchase cheap land and seek higher profits.

Thanks for the vid. Been looking into the water situation in AZ lately, and I was surprised to learn that about 75% of AZ water use is agricultural. I had no idea!

Yes! Agriculture uses a lot of water. It’s important here because we can grow crops year round, unlike other places. But the water use is high for agriculture, that’s for sure

I remember as a child in the 70s cutting lawns for people , seems like everyone had grass, Now my yard is all mesquite, Saguaro's, rock and artificial grass, But we do have a few house plants that needs watering.

Thanks for the concern for a water conservation. Incentives for paying Per unit used needs to be implemented. for example if one conserves water a low per unit charge is applied to a specific amount of usage. If the user uses more than that a higher the per unit charge is applied. Multiple steps with higher unit charges will give a strong financial incentives to conserve water. Users who waste water will pay substantially more. This will automatically provide economic incentives to conserve water.

Absolutely not. If you use a basic amount of water, you’r billed at a low per unit charge. If you use more than the basic usage, your build at a higher per unit charge. You decide based on your pocketbook on how much water you want to use and how much you can afford

California needs to be held accountable for major water wastage, it's so ridiculous seeing people watering green grass like it's going to get greener

I don’t know exactly but I believe some use reclaimed water and some use CAP water and some have turf in certain areas that are less used. I believe it changes all the time and depends on the course

Banking water in Lake Mead is great, but if it's not there, then what?! Money you bank in your credit union is there for you. It won't evaporate. But water?. hmmmmm. Not so much.

Water in Tucson is expensive. Taking baths in inches of water. Water wise faucets, shower heads and toilets. Washing dishes in basins, one wash, one rinse. Gravel/rocks instead of grass. Native cacti and trees. If buying an old home check to be sure street to house pipes are not lead, or corroded .

We can as of a couple of years ago collect rain water because we dont own the rain water Las Vegas phoenix and Tucson and others have to have their thurst taken care of so please use it wisely Cowboy from Colorado
