    This is one of my favorite scenes in any superhero movie. Rorschach was the standout of the film and then he dies in this horribly gut-wrenching way. No sunshine and rainbows for this ending. As much as I would’ve wanted him to live, this was surprising and refreshing for a superhero flick.

  • @woodrobin

    Rorschach wanted to die. And Rorschach wanted Dr. Manhattan to be the kind of person who would kill him. Because that is what, in Rorschach's demented mind, a hero is: a morally uncompromising killer who will do anything, no matter how cruel or heartless, if he believes it is necessary in the service of what he believes is good. And despite another commenter's opinion, he doesn't die as Walter Kovacs. As Rorschach himself says, Kovacs died in the shed with the little girl. Only Rorschach emerged from that shed, not Kovacs.

  • @frofrozzty

    @frofrozzty

    9 ай бұрын

    @@woodrobin I agree with literally everything you said other than "Rorschach wanted to die". No he didn't, he wanted to expose everything. He merely thought it better and more honorable to die than to accept Ozymandius' plot. And he didn't believe "a hero is an uncompromising killer", he didn't even believe in the concept of a hero; he saw the world in black and white, and himself as a garbage man willing to do what it takes. But I guess art and literature is up to interpretation, so if that's what you took away from the character and his arc, who am I to tell you you're wrong? Watchmen is one of the greatest graphic novels ever, and I'm glad that its characters and messages create discourse to this day.

    Rorschach was his own version of idealist too. Rorschach at this point had all but given up on most people criminals in particular. I honestly respect Adrian for having both the wit, and balls to see around John's "omnipotence", and warp it using technology they built together. He knew just how distant John had become to the human race, and how much more distant he would become not too long from the movies events. He knew even if John went full god-mode the nuclear fallout of the war to come would have f'd humanity into a coma or just flatline it. The only way out of it was by making John the ultimate scapegoat in the eyes of humanity.

    I actually like this version of events better than what happened in the book. In the book; Rorschach is obliterated and no one even cared, not even Dan. But I like the prospect of Manhattan showing remorse displayed through his constant blinking (it is mentioned that he shows subtle facial twitches during emotional distress in the film.), Haley's performance during his final moments and voice breaking was on point, Dan's despair after watching his friend and partner being annihilated and turned to human sludge before his very eyes (I can't even imagine watching my best friend die like that), and then later his rage when he attacks Veidt and beats him to a bloody pulp while Veidt just allows him to because he knows he deserves it. And then that moment of Dan telling Veidt that he didn't save mankind, he just deformed it through a lie. There's something beautifully human about the events and the way they transpired in the film vs the book (still love the book though.). I think Alan Moore's disdain for Rorschach actually clouded his judgement when it came to the character's demise, but you can tell that the people who made the film felt very differently about the character and it shows.

    I recall reading somewhere that Alan Moore was horrified to learn that people **liked** Rorschach. That Moore made him to be, basically, an uncompromising fascist that people were supposed to cheer when he was murdered. Allegedly he expressed great disdain for those readers who actually identified with Rorschach saying, in effect, I can't control how people are supposed to act - meaning - the audience was supposed to loathe Rorschach, not see themselves in him; which to me just reinforces the trope of the political Right seeing the political Left as well-intentioned but misguided, while the Left sees the Right as pure evil. It's clear that's how Moore viewed Rorschach.

It's funny, because Alan also did V for Vendetta, where an anarchist psycho brutally tortures a 16 year old girl the same way the SS guards used to torture people in Block 11 at Auschwitz, to show her the truth or something like that. I personally don't think torturing children is very heroic, but that's just me. Maybe I'm just a fascist apologist or whatever. I'm not one to think that Rorschach is without flaw, but at least he has some humanity, much more than I can say of Dr. Manhattan. I love the way nite owl takes his hood off when Rorschach gets ganked. He has a moment of clarity and realizes that he, Rorschach, comedian, and silk spectre are just people with personality disorders in spandex trying to play in the same league as a literal god. He might be the only character in The Watchmen who ever realizes that The Watchmen is a satire of superhero comics. Alan Moore rocks. This is mostly a mediocre movie, but it still has some of the special sheen of the comic. The real practical joke was the accident that created Dr Manhattan. It's interesting that Ozymandias is also so far out of everyone else's league. He's the only one who is actually able to get on Manhattan's level. It takes him an immense amount of effort to be as effective as Manhattan is without trying, but he can do it. He's an interesting counterpoint to the general narrative of Manhattan making the other superheros irrelevant. Ozymandias is explicitly just a guy. He's extremely strong, but he doesn't have super strength, he just works out more than the other heros do. He shows that in this universe, a genuinely great individual actually can be a superhero, without any powers, while Dr Manhattan exists. And that just drives even deeper how pathetic the other heros are.

    @@San-lh8us Rorschach is compelling specifically because he lives a contradiction. Just like Ozymandias, he is selfish and self-righteous but also technically correct from a particular perspective; they're both naive in perfectly opposite ways. Only Dr.Manhattan can see all of the perspectives but when faced with that much freedom he simply shuts down. Only one character was truly correct in the end, and it was The Comedian. Any idiot can make a simple thing complicated; for all of his craftiness and wit, Ozmandias was even more out of touch than Manhattan.

  • @Hibernicus1968

    @@San-lh8us Rorschach was morally in the right here though. He couldn't be party, even in a passive, accessory after the fact sense, to an act of evil such as the murder of several million innocent people. Also, he had a sort of radical libertarian philosophy, which would make him naturally distrustful of top-down solutions imposed by powerful elites -- and with good reason actually; central planners who want to manage whole societies have a uniformly bad record. Even the most brilliant human beings can't predict and manage the actions of millions of individuals. One of the things I actually liked about the "sequel" DC wrote to this, "Doomsday Clock," was the scene when Ozymandias comes to the prime DC universe, and he finds Lex Luthor (he's searching for him and Bruce Wayne, because he's identified them as this earth's two smartest human beings), and Luthor says "Let's see if I'm understanding you correctly. You... created an 'alien invader' that murdered three million people to unite the world. And you're _surprised_ that it hasn't stayed united? If you're the smartest man on your planet, I'd hate to meet the dumbest." If something like this happened in reality, I'd share Rorschach's skepticism that it could actually work, long-term, and I'd definitely share his copinion that it was crime against humanity.

    Yes it’s hard to deny Ozymandias logic. But, at peace for how long? The world will grow to forget about Dr. Manhattan on mars and also one big “flaw” in his logic that I noticed even when I was younger while watching this was why would Dr.Manhattan stop at just the major cities if he had truly gone berserk wouldnt the humans eventually notice that Manhattan isn’t a threat that could be defeated and not even a threat to humans entirely. The question of “why did he stop there?” Will for sure be asked and without further manipulation and death from Manhattan he would just be repeating the cycle. And the new cycle he is creating is ultimately resulting in even more human deaths throughout the future.

  • @kentvesser9484

    @kentvesser9484

    Yeah both the movie and the novel have a problem in that attacks would have to continue to remind humanity every decade or two that an enemy (Manhattan or Lovecraftian Horror) is still out there and still toying with us. The problem of course is that unless humanity can get the upper hand eventually and hunt down their enemy and destroy him/it eventually they will grow weary of the fight, the tax burden of the fight, and the worldwide military industrial complex this would likely spawn. For Ozymandias it would be hard to keep making his fake Lovecraftian extra-dimensional destroyer (As in the novel). Someone would eventually expose it. For Manhattan he's not likely to even remember to come back every decade or two, to refresh man's fear of him. Eventually a century of nothing would pass and the survivors will have all passed away and the "Never forget" impetus will start fading. They will have to keep killing millions on a regular basis and if humans press forward with technologies to hunt down and combat Manhattan or actually open some portal into another dimension the results likely won't be good.
