I love Theoden. That's why it annoys me when people try and shade him. He is the best KING in LOTR. No it is not Aragorn. Aragorn was a loner..running and hiding from his destiny. He knew nothing about being a king. He displayed his naivety when he interfered to stop Theoden from killing Wormtongue. That was a clear mistake and what makes Theoden such an essential character. Aragorn had to learn how to be a king FROM a king. His time around Theoden influenced and trained him on how to be a leader of a kingdom. This is also why Theoden had to die, so Aragorn could be elevated to being the King of both realms of men. LOTR is as much about Aragorn's journey as it is about Frodo's. He had to be trained to be a leader. It was first Gandalf who showed him how to lead a fellowship. This is why Gandalf dies in the narrative although they brought him back. After Gandalf dies is the first time you see Aragorn step up to lead everyone. He starts to not just be a formidable ranger but a leader. Boromer reminded him of his duty and honor to men. His death reminded him of his purpose. But it wasn't until being in the presence of Theoden that he learned how to be a king.

The greatest movies ever. The greatest trilogy ever. You can feel the love for the source material in the film. Everybody at the top of their craft - from the acting to the costumes to the music to special effects to the makeup to the set builders and artists. The stars all aligned to produce something truly special. Doesn’t happen often. Maybe once in 2 or 3 generations. So happy it came out when it did - it couldn’t be made today.

@@wadumin The bonus materials that came with the DVD explain that the lyrics to the song at the end (sung by Annie Lennox) were inspired by an aspiring young filmmaker who lived in New Zealand when they were filming. He was quite talented, but he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer. To honor his dying wish, he was given the chance to hang around the production. He touched many of the cast and crew, notably Fran Walsh (co-author of the screenplay with Peter Jackson). Sadly, the young man (maybe 19 years old if I remember right) died during the production. Walsh channeled their shared grief into the lyrics of the song which she co-wrote with Lennox.

You're right, the Ring was trying to take Frodo one last time. As for why Frodo had to leave, he said it in his home before Sam showed up. Some hurts go too deep, some wounds cannot mend. Frodo was scarred, physically and mentally by carrying the Ring. PTSD of the worst level. He couldn't heal. But the Undying Lands of the elves could heal him. He went for the same reason as Bilbo. Being a ringbearer for so long, it left its mark. And many, many years later, after Rosie dies of old age, Sam will take a ship as well. The Ring left a mark on him as well. And yes, the Rohirrim and their horns, that speech and charge? Undoubtedly my favourite scene ever. The music for Rohan makes my heart pound every time. Sam's strength, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" makes me cry even now after seeing it a dozen times. Seeing it in the theatre was unbelievable. I was in my 20s, and first read the books in the early 90s. They will always be a favourite

Additional fun fact! Frodo will not entirely stay in the main undying land of Valinor, aka Aman, but in an island called Tol Eressëa where elves also reside. Tho he was permitted to cross the Sundering Seas and enter the Undying Lands, he won't be able to enter the mainland and that is because it is the land of the actual immortals, the Ainu and the First Borns, the Elven Kind. Numenorians, Aragorn's ancestors, thought that entering Aman will grant one an instant immortality, but that is not the case. It would be like a poison to their own souls and they will die faster, as per Sir JRR Tolkien's essay "Aman and Mortal Men".

@@PanDeSal.28I don't entirely agree with the Tol Eressea sentiment. I can see someone like Gimli as well as Legolas staying at Eressea as that's where Galadriel and the rest of the Noldor chose to stay. Tol Eressea is apart of Valinor. Granted a secluded island but still. I imagine both Bilbo and Frodo would want to explore whether that's visiting the garden of Yavanna and other things. Frodo at this point is still not that entirely old as I believe he's around his early 50s so I don't think he'd be too happy if he was forced to stay in Eressea. Could also be an instance where the Valar would meet with him and see the person who destroyed both the One Ring and Sauron and perhaps Gimli would be able to meet Aule. Also I see the whole thing with mortals in Valinor not as a poisoning but rather a perception of time in the perception of the elves, Valar and Ainur that makes it seem like they die quicker rather than as if the holy Ray's are killing mortals in Valinor faster.

Although the film portrays as Frodo only owning the ring for a year or two, in the book he had it for almost 20 years. That's plenty of time for it to spread its influence into Frodo's psyche. This also shows how heroic Frodo's accomplishments were when you think about someone like, for example Boromir, who only was in the vicinity of the ring for a few weeks and was almost consumed by it.

@@mgamble79 went to Tol Eressea next to Valinor(Valanor by the elves). Avalonnë (Avalon: Celtic.). Mortals who have less unity between body and soul actually go mad and turn into monsters if they stay in Valinor too long. They’d be at their height for such a long time and live prolonged life but then it goes down hill pretty quick as the spirit becomes more vigorous and doesn’t want to forsake the body yet the body definitely still cannot handle how hot the human spirit burns in general so they burn their own body away quite fast and or they become more feral in a sense. A couple points :) The power of the ring to corrupt is directly proportional to how close you are to the volcano. Once through that door it's so strong that no mortal could ever willingly throw it in and destroy it. The only way it was possible to destroy it was for the fight between Gollum and Frodo to cause it to accidentally drop. Gandalf knew a lot of this and had such a deep respect for Gollum that when he came with the Eagles he made sure there was a third to carry Gollum to safety. You can even see the third eagle double check the rock after the other two collect the hobbits, realise theres no Gollum and then fly off to follow the others.

You can think of the Ring like a flashlight that has no limit to how bright it can be. It gets brighter and brighter until they enter Mount Doom, and the light or aura from the ring is literally so bright that Frodo can't experience anything except for the ring itself. The ring becomes so powerful that everything else ceases to exist. Frodo had to leave Middle Earth because the ring wounded Frodos' soul. His soul was damaged beyond repair, so taking the ship (dying) was the only way to finally find peace.

Just a little explanation about Merry, Eowyn and the Nazgul. In the books Tolkien make clear how he sheer presence of the Nazgula was lethal for living beings because of the "black breath" a sort of malicious and deadly aura affecting all that came in their presence (that's an idea coming straight from the Fimir myth of anciant Ireland). The black breath caused the people exposed to fall in a slumber , the longer the exposure to the breath the longer and deeper the sleep they were thrown into - then into a coma and ultimately into death. So being both Eowyn and Merry the ones standing closest to the Nazgul, they were exposed to the black breath and immediatly after the fight was over they just fell down. It was just the intervention of the King that saved them ("the hands of the King are the hands of a healer", one of the many mystic/symbolic little add-ons Tolkien threw in troughout the entire book to give more depht and perspective to Aragorn's story arc)

  • @SoupDragonish

    @SoupDragonish

    22 күн бұрын

It's not just the black breath. The Witch King (head Nazgul) was a mighty sorcerer even before he became a wraith. His weapons had powerful spells and striking him would cause a kind of reverse damage. Eowyn was struck by his mace and stabbed him, Merry also just stabbed him. In the books, in a sub story the film left out, the blade Merry stabbed him with came from the northern sister kingdom of Gondor called Arnor. Arnor was destroyed by the very same Witch King of Angmar thousands of years ago. It too carried ancient spells made to fight the Witch King.

At 40:56, the director has chosen here to omit a small but significant scene from Tolkien's book. Smeagol lies defeated on the ground, and Frodo is trudging up the road to the Sammath Naur, the Chambers of Fire, to destroy the Ring. Sam is left to kill Gollum. But Sam finally shows pity to Gollum, having carried the Ring himself for a while. He sends Gollum off with a kick in the rear, and turns to follow Frodo. But Gollum retreats only a short way, and when Sam turns his back, he follows warily behind, the light of madness in his eyes. Later, when all is over and Gollum and the Ring are destroyed, and Frodo and Sam lie on a crag awaiting death, Frodo says to Sam, "But do you remember Gandalf's words: 'Even Gollum may have something yet to do?' But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring. The Quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end. So let us forgive him! For the Quest is achieved, and now all is over. I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam."

When Aragorn was young and they had fallen in love, Elrond laid down the law that HIS elf daughter’s not going to marry a mortal man unless that man is the restored King of Gondor. And so for decades THAT was Aragorn’s prime motivation in everything he did. The concept of the reluctant exile was made up for the movie. Book-Aragorn was always hell-bent on defeating Sauron and becoming king so he could marry Arwen.

Yeah I like what they did for the movie though. I think reluctant but noble and brave Aragorn was super sympathetic for the audience. If he was as he was in the book it wouldn't be quite as good. The books are amazing of course but this change they made I liked.😊

In case you want to know what happened to each of the main characters after the events in LOTR: Aragorn had children with Arwen. Eldarion, his eldest son, took the throne of Gondor and Aragorn laid down to voluntarily die -- a gift Numenoreans were given (Numenoreans had unusually long life compared to other humans). He had reestablished the Kingdom of Arnor and Eriador was on the way to being resettled. Within a year of Aragorn dying, Arwen died from a broken heart and was buried next to her husband. Sam went on to become Mayor of Michel Delving, and had a large family. When his wife Rose died, he sailed to the Undying Lands and was allowed passage because he was briefly a Ring bearer and showed immense courage & bravery at the time. So he was reunited with Frodo. Merry & Pippin had long and prosperous lives in the Shire. They became leaders of the Brandybucks and Tooks, respectively. At the age of 102, they both returned to Rohan and Gondor; they died in Gondor, and were laid to rest among the Kings of Gondor in Rath Dínen, the street of tombs, then moved to lie next to Aragorn. Legolas brought Elves from Mirkwood to Ithilien, to restore it after the war. Gimli brought folk to the Glittering Caves in Rohan and helped repair Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. Eventually, Legolas sailed for the Undying Lands, and was allowed to take Gimli with him (Normally only Elves are lalowed in the Undying Lands alongside the Valar but an exception was made for Gimli who deep connection with Elves and especially Legolas & Galadriel) Faramir built a castle near Minas Tirith, married Éowyn of Rohan, and his family remained Stewards of Gondor when the King went north to visit Arnor. Éomer lived a good long life and helped King Elessar (Aragorn) to subdue many of the evil men who had backed Sauron in years past.

The elves are immortal but that doesnt mean they dont feel pain from seeing things - including people - die. The three rings of the elves protect them from that pain, which is why when people are around gandalf (who has the third ring) they feel more positive, but the elven rings dont completely protect the elves from that pain (which has a name, but i forget it). When sauron's ring is destroyed the magic that was used to make the elves rings is also destroyed and the elven rings lose their powers, including their power to protect the elves from the accumulated sadness of death. Thats the primary reason why the elves want to leave middle earth and return to the Undying Lands - because nothing there dies there is no pain from the presence of death. They take Bilbo and Frodo with them (and eventually sam - he carried and actually wore the ring in the books when he entered cirith ungol to rescue Frodo) because the undying lands can also help them cope with the pain inflicted by bearing the ring. You guys will love The Hobbit trilogy. It is the prequel to LOTR. What Gandalf calls "the incident with the dragon".

@@tileux The 3 Elven Rings are not susceptible to “The One Ring” in any direct way.. They’re only tied by fate to lose their power if Sauron is defeated completely & absolutely. As they were made by the elves and as always they make things for a purpose and pour their literal spirit into things they create. So if Sauron is defeated then the three rings power will fade and basically become almost useless or diminished versions of their original design since by this era magic has bled from the world by a huge degree thanks to Morgoth’s poisoning the world itself with his very essence that he poured into it. Called The Long Defeat By The Elves and The Men Of The West. Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves ( which lead to 300-500years of his infiltration & deception down the drain.) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Noldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Celebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, & evil in the form of Sauron had been defeated twice already in the past. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤ There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted! Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion: 1200 Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens. c. 1500 The Elven-smiths instructed by Sauron reach the height of their skill. They begin the forging of the Rings of Power. c. 1590 The Three Rings are completed in Eregion. c. 1600 Sauron forges the One Ring in Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Celebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron. 1693 War of the Elves & Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden." 'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them. But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained. These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One."

The scene in the tavern after the Hobbits have returned to the Shire is truly the embodiment of veterans returning home from the war. The whole time they'd been gone, they'd wanted nothing more than to return home, but now that they're home, it seems so small. After everything they've seen and experienced, the only ones who they can talk to are each other because no one else in the Shire will have any idea what they're talking about. I've always felt that Frodo's decision to go to the Grey Havens was because of several factors: 1) The physical scarring he endured from the stab wound as well as from having to carry the Ring for so long. 2) The mental trauma he suffered from what the Ring put him through. 3) Despite knowing what the Ring would do to him, from seeing what it did to Smeagol/Gollum, to Bilbo and Boromir, and that all of his friends and all of Middle-Earth were counting on him to destroy it, he still tried to take the Ring for himself and he could never truly forgive himself for that moment of weakness. I truly believe the only reason he didn't let go and fall into the lava at Mount Doom was because he knew that Sam would have jumped right in after him, and he couldn't do that to Sam. Hopefully in the Grey Havens he'll find some sense of peace.

He was afraid of Glorfindel Of The Golden Flower very much. Same with Galadriel too I might add. He wouldn’t even approach lothlorien. He & his armies would always avoid her lands to the point of risking taking longer roads around her lands) Éowyn: “Be gone, foul Dwimmerlaik, Lord of carrion. Leave the dead in peace!” Lord of the Nazgûl: “Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey, or he will not slay thee thee in thy turn, he will bear thee away to the house of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be left naked before the lidless eye!” Éowyn: “Do what you will. I will hinder it, if I may!”
Lord of the Nazgûl: “Hinder me? Thou fool. Dost thou not know the prophecy? ‘No living man may hinder me.’ “
Éowyn: “But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn am I. You stand between me and my Lord and kin. Be gone for living or dark undead, I will smite you if you touch him!” Being severely injured by The Black Breath(plague type poison had taken over Eowyn & her Hobbit friend, Éowyn was immediately healed by Aragorn, who saved her just in time before she certainly would have died of her wounds. She remained behind to heal, while also meeting and falling in love with Faramir. At Éowyn's behest, Merry was made a knight by her brother, the newly-named king of Rohan. After the War of the Ring, Éowyn married Faramir just outside of Ithilien and became its lady while Faramir became its king. Together, they had one child together named Elboron and a grandson named Barahir. And the dramatic silence from the WitchKing is palpable in the books. Interesting thing too is that Rohirric women have fought beside their men for a long time. It’s just this importance of this battle didn’t want to risk harming the future generations and to protect the women so the significance was that this woman was the only one on Pellenor Fields that day!

If you remember back to the end of the first movie, the parallels you are looking for can be found there. Yes, the Ring kept trying against all hope to remain in power and existence in the world, and it was literally centimeters from the source of its magical origin in the fires of Mt. Doom, so it was arguably at its strongest, which is why it kept getting heavier and more powerful over the bearer, the closer that they got. So you can make a case that the Ring was being spiteful and malicious at its very end, and doing everything it could to ensure that hope died in Frodo, so that Frodo would die with the Ring. But the parallel scene which was established at the end of the Fellowship of the Ring was when Frodo split off from the Fellowship following the orc attack that killed Boromir, and Sam came out after him even though Sam could not swim. At that point, Frodo reaches down into the depths of a watery grave and rescues Samwise, with the same hand that Frodo would later lose his index finger on. In the end, Sam reaches down into a fiery grave, and rescues Frodo in turn, but Frodo has lost not only the Ring, but the proverbial "pound of flesh" that the devil takes as his due.

At 5:42, Tolkien describes Shelob as "an evil thing in spider-form," but a zoologist would object that Shelob has an abdominal stinger, which true spiders don't have (their sting is up front in their fangs). It also looks like Shelob has several extra pairs of mouthparts not found in real spiders. These features are courtesy of Peter Jackson & Co., who based their version of Shelob on the funnel-web spiders that terrified PJ as a child. Tolkien wasn't a zoologist, either--he gives Shelob compound eyes, which true spiders don't have. Incidentally, "Shelob" comes from an old English name for spider: "lob." Whatever--Shelob is a terrifying monster either way!

I think it’s also worth noting that Shelob is also an independent entity, and not a servant of Sauron, thanks to her parent Ungoliant asserting independence from (and even some active hostility towards) Morgoth. If Shelob happens to provide some security for that path into Mordor, that’s really just incidental to it being her lair, and a few Orcs lost to her when it’s dinner time is ultimately no big deal.

Your question about the ring melting when Frodo finally gains hope and control again, and grabs Sam’s arm and then the ring melts you can look at it as Frodo freeing himself from its grasp or its will, but the ring is actually floating on the lava crust of what’s left of Gollums body, and when Frodo gains hope at the same time the piece of crust breaks apart and the ring false and melts, I’ve always looked at it as Gollums attempt to keep his precious safe, even after death

I’ve always interpreted the fact that the Ring doesn’t immediately sink below the Lava as the fact that it would never be destroyed that quickly, just as it was never made that quickly either. It takes time for the Ring to heat up to the point where it would dissolve. You can even see the Black Speech writing appear on the Ring as it’s floating, indicating that the temperature is rising and the Ring is feeling the heat. Even though it made my heart rate rise when I first saw that scene, even then it personally always made sense to me that the Ring would take time to be dissolved. Nothing of power and consequence disappears immediately.

Congratulations for reaching the end guys! I think Peter Jackson & Co were lucky that they could make the entire trilogy in one go. It's not like in many other cases where the first part comes out and then there's a lot of financial interest and everybody butts in and tries to influence the next parts out of fear for losing money and then the whole thing becomes "designed by committee". They could stay true to their original ideas to the very end and so this became one of the very rare cases in which the book and the movies have differences (they must have of course), but they are both equally good and those differences don't bother me. There is one tiny point where I don't agree with the director's decision, where the chief Nazgul breaks Gandalf's staff. The Witch King might be powerful but he's still only a human, while Gandalf is a Maia. There are cases in the lore when humans and elves fight against Maiar or even a corrupted Vala, but that's always physical, never by means of magic. But that's really just nitpicking. As for deeper meanings... this sounds a bit Zen, but: I think of Frodo, Sam and Gollum as three sides of a person. The Hero, the Common Man and the Villain. We all have those inside of us. That's why they can only accomplish the task together and when it's accomplished, Gollum has to die, Frodo goes to "heaven" and Sam remains in Middle Earth (called "middle" by no accident) until the end of his life when he also goes to "heaven". This view gives a more profound meaning to each decision that the trio ever made. P.S. i teach film music at a university and this is a core part of the curriculum. In my opinion it's the best movie soundtrack ever made, Howard Shore's absolute masterpiece.

I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil." And finally Frodo looking pale, dulled eyes, and sleepless, to boarding the ship, turning back to his friends and skin having colour, eyes bright and clear again, being finally happy and at peace. These 4 moments have NEVER left me dry eyed. 20 years, and they still get me, even as i write this im choking up. God I love the Lord of the Rings.

I met my wife when we were teenagers, and a love of fantasy novels was something we had in common, but she had not read Lord of the Rings. So I gave her a nice boxed set for first Christmas while dating. Her mother read them too and loved them and I'm pretty sure that is a big part of why she wanted me to be the one to marry her daughter. I used that same boxed set to read LotR to each of our kids when they were old enough as their bedtime stories. Those books have fallen apart now and we have a new set, but we still keep the old one for sentimental reasons.

I love these movies so much. My friends and I have an annual tradition of watching all three of the extended editions every year around Christmas-time. And I'll usually watch them once or twice on my own at some point during the year. Anyways, I'm glad you two enjoyed it so much. Regarding The Hobbit -- I'd suggest you watch those, too, even though they aren't even close to the level of these movies. The Hobbit isn't *bad* it just suffers in the shadows of this towering achievement. But you'll probably still enjoy it. And, of course, read the books.

Galadriel's rank did rise in Valinor during her absence in Middle Earth. Prior to her departure, she was the youngest daughter of the youngest son of the second wife of High King of the Noldor, Finwë. This put her roughly eighteenth in line for the Noldorin crown behind her father Finarfin, uncles; Fingolfin & Fëanor, aunt, and all other children of Fëanor: Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Curufin, Caranthir, Amrod, Amras(the last two were the youngest that were practically teenagers when they were basically made to go with their father despite Nerdanel pleaing for her two youngest sons to remain in Valinor with her. Fëanor effectively lost all claim to the crown when he rebelled and dragged his entire house to Middle Earth. Where he promptly died a heroic death after slaying several Balrogs at the Dagor-nuin-Giliath; The Elves first encountered Lord Of Balrogs named Gothmog in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath; (meaning “the battle fought under stars”) before the first rising of the Moon. In that battle, Fëanor's fury had caused him to draw forward of the main force of the Noldor, and so he came upon Gothmog with only a small guard left around him that rushed so deep into enemy territory. Fëanor slayed 2 or 3 balrogs at once & Gothmog slayed him after one bound him suddenly with its primordial flame whip when he was supposed to have an uninterrupted “one on one” duel with Gothmog but one wasn’t wanting to play fair. But he was fatally wounded and so his sons and host moved him away to a safe place where his body burned up from the fires of his own spirit. His entire line was extinguished through a series of disastrous choices starting with their high spirited oath to take on Morgoth even if it meant to slight Manwë, “Chieftain Of The Valar” & Eru Îlluvatar; (God). Manwë was the counterpart and brother of Melkor; (now Morgoth). With the possible exception of Maglor; Who may now haunt the shores of Middle Earth as a melancholy wandering shade as self punishment for his many sins. Fëanor’s half brothers; Fingolfin, made the journey to Middle Earth mostly out of concern for the well-being of the Ñoldorin people in exile. His line was also utterly extinguished by war and conflict with Morgoth and Sauron. This leaves Galadriel's father Finarfin. Finarfin heeded the warnings of Mandos(Namò); and turned back, Returning to Valinor. Assuming the crown of High King of the Noldor in Valinor. At first, the position was somewhat ad hoc because higher ranking Noldor technically existed in exile. However, ALL of them died and fell into the Halls of Mandos. This warning wasn’t some sort of bossy command or demand to return to Valinor, but instead was foretelling the woe & heartbreak that’d follow those whoever pursue Morgoth at this time in such a fashion no matter how hot the virtuous fire burned within their Fëa(Spirit). Remember. Morgoth killed his father (Finwë, Galadriel’s grandfather.) ontop of the fact his mother being the literal first death to ever occur within Valinor and elven kind. They were supposed to be safe in Valinor after his ancestors made the great journey, ending up settling in Valinor on the behest of the Vala Oromë who found his great ancestors. They were in huge danger at this time, and if they continued their prolonged living on the landmass terrorized by Melkor/Morgoth, they’d not long last if they were left exposed to him any longer so that’s what lead to the great journey. But during that journey several sub clans of elves were born from where other groups decided to settle along the way, other groups never left their original ancestral region. By the end of the Third Age, Finarfin had become the undisputed, rightful High King of the Ñoldor. His living children are therefore at the top of the line of succession. Under normal circumstances, this would mean that Galadriel is the heir to the crown. However, her eldest brother Finrod Felegund was such a super good dude that the powers that be gave him a free pass on the whole remaining dead thing(as for many reasons it took a long time before an elf can reembody again and begin to live in those lands. He was allowed to reincarnate almost as soon as his soul returned to the Undying Lands(Valinor). Depending on how they died and the current state of their spirit ontop of their own self imposed shackles they may remain in Mandos for quite a long time. Other lengths of time are due to the level of trauma they had before death etc. Still. Galadriel has little room to complain. When she left Valinor, she was last in line behind her father, and all of her uncles, siblings and cousins. As well as an ever growing list of their children. When she returned, she was second in line behind only her older brother. Besides. The high kingship went hugely deserving to the third king who ruled with Finwë equally: Ingwë himself. Her other two brothers are still in the Halls Of Mandos, one might have been able to earn a new body but the other essentially wished to never take a body again until the ending of this world whilst he closely held the spirit of a human lady that was his lover he was betrothed to wed and probably have children of his own. But both Aegnor and Angrod(Galadriel’s elder brothers); had to take part in what became The War Of Wrath. Both died at some point during that 80 year long war within the great ancestral lands of Beleriand. Mankind cannot persist in Mandos for their spirit ventures beyond the circles of the world (The Gift Of Men; Death. This was essentially so Morgoth couldn’t kidnap and lure all of the spirits of mankind and bent them to his own devices. Genius thing really, because Valar & Maiar are bound to this world equally as much as the Eldar were as well, The Elves. This is why Aegnor’s love Andreth was such a unique thing because his love for her transcended the very rules of the world as they currently stood, until what has become known as the final battle where Morgoth frees himself from the Void, gets defeated at the final battle, “end of the world”, and the world is remade afterwards, becoming greater than the original design of the world ontop of all the wisdom gained through the hardships and romances of Arda-marred. Where living in true peace could be truly appreciated.

You guys did a great job of understanding this movie a lot of people are somewhat confused. Nice job. Yes, it was amazing to see the movie in the theater when it first came out . I was introduced to LOTR in Jr High by my english teacher and I totally fell in love. Have re read the books for years, so was really worried about what they were going to put on the screen. The movie gets started and no one in the theater so much as got up to get snacks, no one talking on their phones. Everyone reacted to this movie as if we were there. It was an experience and I now watch it at home as well as reading the books every year. The worst part was having to wait a year for the next movie to come out. Any way Jackson did an amazing job, of course there were changes some things added some not. Jackson got the essence and core value of the story. I do hope you get to see it in a theater, it's breathtaking on a large screen. Definitely read the books. The Hobbit movies are definitely different in style but still tells a good story and is really fun to watch.

I might have watched it almost 10 times... but still that one dialogue "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you" gets me all the time. I hope you understood why Gollum was necessary according to Gandalf. If it wasn't for gollum, the ring would've never been destroyed. He was evil, but his evil trait, in turn saved the world as well. Loved your reaction to all these movies... ❣ My all time favorite movies, and I love the way, you both adored them. Love you guys... FOR FRODO! 🧙‍♂

At 32:15, this interlude between Faramir and Eowyn isn't in the Theatrical version, but in the book it's a pretty story. A nice detail is the dark robe Eowyn is wearing. Tolkien writes: "They were clad in warm raiment and heavy cloaks, and over all the Lady Eowyn wore a great blue mantle of the colour of deep summer-night, and it was set with silver stars about hem and throat. Faramir had sent for this robe and had wrapped it about her; and he thought that she looked fair and queenly indeed as she stood there at his side. The mantle was wrought for his mother, Finduilas of Amroth, who died untimely, and was to him but a memory of loveliness in far days and of his first grief; and her robe seemed to him raiment fitting for the beauty and sadness of Eowyn."

I even compared Avengers: Engame charge with this one, and the conclusion is... This one tops it with almost no competition. A:E had a good hype prepared, seeing all the heroes together charging was amazing, but after that, you see a big fight of a few shots of little seconds of everyone kicking ass, and you feel no tension whatsoever. You know that the heroes keep kicking ass and nothing can stop them, HELL they even stop the battle for one moment to show all the females together doing a new charge that it doesn't even work because Cap. Marvel is so OP that she could destroy all that army without much effort. Now this one... This one is Epic, Romantic and just heroic. The charge is awesome, they actually chant that they will fight EVEN if they know they are going to die, and after that... we get a new charge OF THE ENEMY, destroying the army that are we so hiped about, and fearing that they are actually going to loose. We even have a female badass moment! But it is not one that we are sure she is going to win, she struggles, get hurt, almost gets killed. Tension, moments that we feel that the heroes will loose, real shots that keep on time to makes us not only see the epic moment, but to soak on it. This one got all of those over Endgame from beggining to end.

The most beautiful ending ever. Frodo leaving Middle-Earth was bittersweet. No living being was supposed to have will power to destroy the ring, so Frodo did the most he could and the rest was "fool's hope". Great reaction. Morgul orcs and Mordor orcs had internal power struggle, as they were sure of Sauron's win, and while fighting each other they let Frodo and Sam escape.

At 35:30 you ask, "What is that?" This scene isn't in the Theatrical version of the movie, so you're getting a treat (I think?). Tolkien writes, "The rider was robed all in black, and black was his lofty helm, yet this was no Ringwraith but a living man. The Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dur he was, and his name is remembered in no tale, for he himself had forgotten it, and he said, "I am the Mouth of Sauron." But it is told that he was a renegade, who came of the race of those that are named the Black Numenoreans...And he entered the service of the Dark Tower when it first rose again, and because of his cunning he grew ever higher in the Lord's favour; and he learned great sorcery, and knew much of the mind of Sauron, and he was more cruel than any orc."

59:45 Yes, it’s cinematic symbolism. In the book, Gollum actually just falls in without any help from Frodo and the ring is destroyed immediately with the impact. Here, they showed the ring just resting on some molten lava and breaking apart as Frodo decides to climb back up showing as you put it to kind of show the darkness losing subsequently with Frodo winning. That’s my take away at least

The ring not sinking until after frodo chooses life was very famously made during editing. The scene was tried in several ways until they finally realized that the external struggle should be linked to the internal one. "The Decision That SAVED The Lord of the Rings" from Pentex Productions, I think. I just watched it, it's really interesting. I'd always assumed it was just a concession to the fact that an immediate kerplop and melt would make for bad pacing, and then they just found a way to mesh the practical need with the hope-and-despair theme of the movie, but it's neat that it was actually a much more winding road to get there.

Great reaction!! Yeah, many reader polls in 2000 asked “What was the greatest work of fiction (book) of the 20th century?” And at the top of the list of many of them? “The Lord of the Rings.” This was almost 2 years before the movie, “Fellowship,” came out in Dec., 2001. The book trilogy is one of the best-selling books of all time - over 150 million copies sold. And believe it or not, they are even better than the movie version, IMHO. You feel like you are actually there in Middle Earth. Imagine the pressure on Director Peter Jackson to make a movie adaptation that would satisfy both book fans and movie fans. Fortunately, being a huge fan of the books, Jackson and his crew DID succeed in capturing the spirit and many of the elements of Tolkien’s 1,200 page masterpiece. I was SO happy when I saw what Jackson had created! Spoiler: re: Gollum. Remember in “Fellowship” in Moria when Frodo notices Gollum following them? Frodo says to Gandalf, “It’s a pity Bilbo didn’t kill him when he had the chance!” And Gandalf responds, “Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be so eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part yet to play, for good or ill. Before this is over, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.” No kidding! If Bilbo had slain Gollum in the Misty Mountains in “The Hobbit” (and he certainly would have been justified because Gollum was getting ready to kill him - you’ll see this in “The Hobbit”), Gollum wouldn’t have been around at the end to play his part. And ALL would have been lost. Forever.
