Does anyone else realize what would have happened if he had thrown that baby down the well? You know what happens to dead bodies after awhile? And it’s not like people would stop drinking from the well. People would have gotten sick left and right. And Frollo would have probably said that the demon baby cursed the well before it died.

Fun fact: In the musical version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frollo is Quazimodo's biological uncle and the reason he hates Romani people is because he effectively blames them for his brother's downward spiral. But he's not actively malevolent or a sadist in that version. In fact, despite his flaws, he's a suprisingly decent guy who *wants* to do the right thing out of guilt for not bei g there for his brother, but he slowly spirals into lust and madness over the course of the story Its a MUCH more nuanced iteration of the character that completely flips the story on its head

What I like the most in this film, is that every details can give you a hint about what will happened to Frollo. Especially the cathedral itself. Like in the first song, the Bells of Notre-Dame. The portal behind Frollo is always the central one, called the Last Judgment. When the Archdeacon says Frollo can't escape the eyes of Notre-Dame, is still parts of this portal that are showed. Statues of the twelves apostles, Archangel Michael weighs souls and two demons try to tip the scales, and the most important the stautues of Marie carrying Jesus in her arms and two angels. The two angels carry a candelabrum. The one on the left symbolize Fault, the one on the right Redemption. And when Frollo is told to keep and to rise the child, it's the right tower that Frollo looks at when he talks about hidding the child in the cathedral. So you can see that as God offering him a way for redemption and that Frollo is accepting it, and would maybe change. But when many years later we first see Quasimodo, he is living in the left tower. The left with the angel that symbolize Fault. And you can see Frollo didn't change or took the opportunity that what offered him to change. During the Charivari, when Quasimodo is humiliated and Esmeralda comes to his rescue, the portal behind them is still the Last Judgement one, like an another opportunity for Frollo to commit a fault or redemption. Talking about this portal, all the principal characters will enter the chatedral through this portal. When three will see the divin light at the end of the movie, one will meet the fire of Hell. The three will exit the cathedral through this portal, while Frollo will fall to the fire. Which Mary each character see is also interesting. The one Frollo see, is the one on the facade of the cathedral, she is standing hoding Jesus in her arms, with emotionless face like they were judging Frollo, surrounded by the two angels symbolising Fault and Resemption. The one Esmeralda see in the song God helps the outcasts, Mary is still holding Jesus in her arms, but both are smiling in a tender way with doign a sign of benediction with their hands. White lilies are on the feet of the statue with the symbol of purity and innoncence. Also in this song, at some point behind Esmeralda are paintings of the life of Jesus, on the left still Mary holding him as a baby and on the right his baptism. On the end of the song Esmeralda is standing bathed in the light of one of the rose window, here again in the center Mary holding her child. And the transition between the songs Heaven's Light and Hellfire, is the same rose window where Esmeralda was in the song God help the Outcasts. Can be a link between both characters, maybe she was praying for him in a way like a new offer for redemption for Frollo. An another detail about Hellfire. When Frollo have the smoky Esmeralda ready to embrace him. It is just smoke, just a residue, a part of this fire. Like he would never be able to get Esmeralda entirely, just a part of her. That even if she accepted to belong to him, he would just only have access to her body and not her soul. Fire has also a souble meaning. Fire of Hell but also Purification. Burning Esmeralda is buning her and his sin and also getting a purification out of it. He also consider Esmeralda as a witch and it was pretty common to burn them. In addition, if I remember correctly, when Frolo lay like this at the end of the song, it was also a way to repent. The person would only wear a white robe without shoes, and lay like this in front of the altar if they wanted to repent for important sins. I may be wrong about this, I just don't remember is laying in front of the altar like this would be part of it or not. But I'm almost sure it could be part of some rituals. Another important detail, the music. Dies irae can be heard two times with Frollo. At the beginning when he hunt Quasimodo's mother and when he odered to find Esmeralda. This poem is about the last judgement the saved will be delivered and the unsaved cast into eternal flames. The Cour des Miracles is hidden in a cemetery, a real one in Paris. The Holy Innocent's cemetery, you can visit it it's now the Catacombes, or what remains of it near the Halles, with the fountain. The name speak for itself and the symbol in the movie. Going to th emoment when Frollo have Esmeralda ready to be burned, a song in Latin is played, yet again about judgement and flammes. Behind Esmeralda can be seen the portal of Mary th e Virgin, and behind Frollo the one of the Last Judgement. In this scene when Follo offer Esmeralda to save her from this fire and the other (Hell), he still think he is pure and that it was other than sinned. That he can saved her in the mortal world but also the spiritual one. Neer he will admit his own fault despite all the occasions he had. Quasimodo being tied in the middle of the cathedral, between the two towers. He have to choose between the influence of Frollo, Fault, and Esmeralda, Redemption. He quickly chose and he hold her on the top of the cathedral, she is in the same position that Jesus on the Cross. And from the beginning, each scenes when she first "properly" met Quasimodo or Phoebus, there is light. Esmeralda is their light to guide them on the right pace. Ands it's always in the cathedral. In the tower with Quasimodo, when she see what he does and tels him is not a monster, or Phoebus with this scene with the windows behind them. In the end Frollo still enter by the portal of the Last Judgement. Mistreating the Archdeacon and going to the left tower, the Fault. He even locked himslef here, no redemption can come now. What comes next just burry him deeper into his own sins. Ans ironically its his shadow that would betray his true intentions and will allow Quasimodo to beat him. Also Frollo will commit the last sacrilege he could, drawing a blade in a church and trying to kill someone there. Right before he died, Frollo rise on the gargoil, rising his blade and reciting "He shall smite the wicked", he still think that he is a judge, pure of any sins, punishing the vilains. But the gargoil fall, and im with it, to the fire of Hell. The Last Judgement. While Frollo died in fire, Quasimodo, Esmeralda and Phoebus exit the cathedral by the main entrance. And they are bathed in light. I rewatched the movie for this comment, to be sure not to forget anything. The animators did a wonderful job with this movie. And today, it is still my favorite Disney.

11:16 Here’s a fun fact: “Hunchback” uses a lot of cuch Latin as its background vocals. During “Hellfire,” (the part where the archdeacon is swinging incense), they are singing part of the “Confiteor” (“I confess” in Latin). In this prayer, the believer asks god to forgive their sins and help guide them in their efforts to do better. When translated into English, the first part reads, “I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary, ever-virgin, to St, Michael, the Archangel, [to the Apostles and to] all of the saints….” Once we shift to Frollo, who is praising his own virtue, the chorus answers him back (“that I have sinned/in my thoughts, words, and deeds”). The monks in the red cloaks mock him by singing “Mea culpa/ mea maxima culpa.” ([I’ve sinned through] my fault/ [through] my greatest fault).

YOOOOOOO, shout-out to the Legacy of Kain mention in the live chat! Tony Jay's Elder God is such an underrated Lovecraftian-style villain. His Frollo is an iconic terror, without a doubt, but I'm the LoK-hyperfixated goblin who always remembers his roles from that old dark fantasy franchise. He even voiced Mortanius and William the Just/Nemesis in the very first game, Blood Omen. I could wax poetic about those games to my grave! They had some of the best storytelling and voice acting during the 90s and early 2000s. After the last LoK installment that Tony Jay voice in (Defiance), his death-combined with legendary writer Amy Hennig moving on to projects like Uncharted-spelled the official end for the main series. The IP went to Square Enix, for a while, and they attempted to create new installments; the cancelled Dead Sun, and the multiplayer Nosgoth Online that survived maybe only a couple years before Squeenix shut that down, too (though the latter is supposedly still playable through fan support for the servers, although I haven't interacted with their Discord enough to know if that is still the case today). ... But yeah. Any time Tony Jay is brought up (or any other voice actors from LoK), my old hyperfixation kicks into overdrive and I can't resist trying to spread more awareness of the old Legacy of Kain series. I just really adore the voice acting and quite a bit of the storytelling...! Though I will be honest that the gameplay hasn't aged well, which is why so many LoK fans hope some day for some remasterings (some even wanting remakes, although I'm truly unsure who could replace the original cast).

Not saying Disney needs a film exactly like this, but an epic soundtrack and a dark story would be appreciated. Perhaps for "Hansel & Gretel"?

I think Victor and Laverne are likable and kind enough. Hugo is just not given any nuance so he is too out of place. His ONE line where he isn’t comic relief “alright Quasi we’ll leave you alone” sounds actually heartfelt so it’s not like Jason isn’t capable of acting.

Saber, could you and Rishi do a reaction for the 1997 film Cat's Don't Dance? I actually met one of the animators of this film, Steven Garcia (who worked on Sawyer), and he told me the movie just got a Blu-Ray release.
