I've also heard that around the Salmon River in Idaho there can be bears. That was something not brought into this movie, but I do in this case feel that it makes sense that while having a plot with criminal bad guys taking over the good guys' activities on the river plus also battling the dangers of the river itself, the rapids and waterfalls, it really wasn't necessary to add bears to the plot, and doing so may've even been an overload. But I've still a few times questioned myself about it since it was sort of in a bear country location of the US. There weren't any mention about bears when there was talk about the (soon to be revealed bad) guys walking back to the starting point when they lost their guide, plus the father character Tom did do some trekking along the river without any bear encounters. But again, I do overall feel that it really wasn't necessary for the movie just because of where the location was, and that there was already enough action to keep the movie very interesting, which it really was. So all in all, we didn't need bears this time

Great video, great description and analysis of the movie that I have enjoyed watching for many years. I agree with many of your comments on the different scenes. It's true that the kid should've also expressed appreciation for his mother for all of her work getting down the river. Yes, the dad did save their lives, and I understand him happily stating that, but he only expressed appreciation for him, and should've for his mother too, she did alot of the work. There were definitely red flags earlier on about something being wrong with Wade and Terry. Their story on what happened to their guide didn't all add up, them saying that he just ran out. Besides it not making sense that he would even do that, he was shown in those early scenes to be leaned back laboring in apparently alot of pain (which he was but for different reason), he appeared to certainly not be in any condition to be running off over miles of rugged country and terrain. Then the way Terry followed Tom so closely behind up the mountain while fetching the dog, it was creepy and suspicious when adding that to the other signs already shown. I don't blame Tom at all for sensing something was off about them. Even though giving Roark $200 was a bit much, Tom shouldn't have made such an open fuss to Wade and Roark about it because Tom was not in a position to make Roark upset with him, when they were thinking about ditching those guys. The family needed to be close and focused then without extra domestic tension. Roark however was still way out of line when Tom and Gail tried to get him into the boat to escape, and his bratty fighting them was actually THE reason why they didn't get away from Wade and Terry in time. I know that there had to be some reason to get them held hostage or else there wouldn't have been a movie, but the reason the movie used made me annoyed at Roark during that part of the movie. It is still a great action filled movie with alot of great scenes. Kevin Bacon and John C Reilly were very convincing as criminal bad guys, Meryl Streep was great as Gail, very convincing in both an athletic river rower and as a caring mother and wife. The way she determinedly protected her family at all costs throughout all of the high points of the movie was very good. And David Stratham as the distant workaholic husband and father made a very convincing turnaround in character since a literal life and death situation like this one is one very convincing way to believe that he now truly realized what was most important in life. I did wonder if Tom could've really walked alongside the river to the gauntlet faster than Gail, Wade, and everyone in the boat could go downriver towards it. That's just a small quib though, it's a great movie overall
