"She's so weirdly pleasant" is such a great way of describing Luna. Her actress (Evanna Lynch) actually helped design some accessories for the costume. She also struggled with anorexia when she was younger and Harry Potter was a huge lifeline for her (iirc she even wrote letters to the author at one point). I almost feel like the role was meant for her all along. As a book reader I think her portrayal of Luna was spot-on, so much so that it doesn't feel like an actress playing her. She _is_ Luna. It's one of my favorite performances in the whole series

the cruciatus curse on neville's parents made them lose their mind (literally). so they're in a magical mental hospital where they will be for the rest of their lives. in the books, neville visits them with his grandma regularly. on another note: i really do like the relationship between luna and harry. they understand each other since they both lost parents and it's not a romantic relationship but a strong friendship that is built on just getting each other and validating the other's emotions.

Insanity is putting it vaguely almost, his dad is catatonic and his mom moves but much like dementia patients (something that was very relevant to the author) . And neither recognize Neville at all. I’m not correcting you, I’m just adding to it because crazy covers a bunch of things but the detail of it is relevant to the heaviness and complexity of Neville’s arc. Movies also don’t show this but while quiet and soft mannered Neville follow basically all the beserk tropes, this ministry battle has a death eater blinded by him with a wand to his eyes and asking for help, Harry also mentions that after the Azkaban outbreak Neville wouldn’t stop practicing and didn’t care if ever got hurt (which also happens with herbology often in the books) and it takes all four Gryffindor boys to hold him back from punching Malfoy for making a joke about the mental ward of st mungus (not even about his parents). I particularly like how this goes full circle with him being not that confident in his magical abilities cause u go back to movie and book 1 Neville trying to fight the trio with his fists and it’s like “look at his cute pajamas” but this guy is just “when you can’t use a wand just throw some hand” 🤷‍♀️

@@Heuwelman (I don’t know if we’d ever find out about how stuff like using legiminens or obliviate if the author were to write about it but what we do know is that magical Injuries are not treatable like muggle attacks. Say you’re a wizard and someone chops ur arm off, canonically, it could be reattached easily with magic) the same can’t be said for damage done by spells (hence Alastor Moody not having an eye and a leg). With the longbottoms it is also important to say that as they were both aurors, there’s a chance that they’d know some Occlumency and could Have tried to protect their Minds, but it is stated that it went on for a long time and that it was unexpected because Voldermort had already fallen and the crime was just death eaters insisting they had information they didn’t. I, also sometimes wonder if Neville’s bad memory is somewhat related to his parents attacks. Not ptsd but because he was a bit older than a year old when his parents attacks happened and he was there só sure, it could just be his grandma making him feel bad, Or a character quirk but maybe healers did try to obliviate a baby and it went wrong or maybe he even got tortured himself (Bellatrix is not above it): plus Harry can see his memories and while arguably - it could be because the memories he sees are due to that SPOILER THING - if it isn’t then Neville may have witnessed something and being either obliviated (to bad results) or traumatized to the point of going a lil lost like he did in book four after moodys class - or, worse case scenario: also tortured (to a minor degree).

She was even mentioned often throughout the books series. But Harry never knew that Mrs. Fig is actually part of the wizarding community. Harry actually found out about Hagrid being a half giant by mistake during Goblet of Fire. Hagrid's biological mother, Fridwulfa is a giant. Hagrid's father was a wizard. Grawp is Hagrid's brother by way of their giant mother. Ron's brother, Percy had a falling out with the Weasley family. He never believed Harry's story about Voldemort's return and was on the side of the Minister of Magic. Neville's parents are very much alive and are permanent patients at Saint Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies. Because of all the torture that Bellatrix, her husband and Barty Crouch Junior inflicted on them they are mentally damaged. While visiting Mr. Weasley in the hospital Harry, Ron and Hermione come across Neville and his grandmother and was able to meet Neville's parents. The Weasley twins weren't expelled. They quit school. When Harry won the Tri Wizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire he gave his winnings to the twins. Harry originally tried to give it to Cedric's father but he refused to take it. As a result of Harry giving it to the twins Fred and George started using the money to start a side business and made Harry as a secret investor and silent partner. That is why the twins kept inventing all sorts of magical practical joke sweets throughout Order of the Phoenix. When the Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny and Luna flew the Thestrals the majority of them couldn't see what it was they were flying. Earlier in the school year they did learn about Thestrals in Magical Beasts class when Hagrid introduced them to the students. Those who had witnessed death had no trouble seeing them. But the rest couldn't and all they saw was raw meat being devoured by some invisible entities. When the group flew the Thestrals it was as if they were flying on thin air. They can feel the animals but couldn't see them. In the end of the book when Harry talks to Dumbledore in his office, Dumbledore reveals that the prophecy actually came from Professor Trelawney and it was he who witnessed Professor Trelawney make prophecy while she was in a trance. The prophecy was; "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..." Dumbledore said that two babies were born at the end of July. Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Though the prophecy fit Neville just the same as Harry because Neville's parents also defied Voldemort three times, it was Harry that Voldemort chose to kill instead of Neville. It is believed that Voldemort chose Harry because Harry's mother was a muggleborn. Neville's parents are purebloods. During the last evening at Hogwarts Harry desperately runs to the ghost of Nearly Headless Nick and tries to talk to him about Sirius possibly coming back as a ghost. But Nick tells Harry that the only reason why Nick is a ghost residing at Hogwarts is because he refused to move on to the beyond. He refused to let go and wanted to remain. Nick explained to Harry that Sirius moved on. 📚🪄🔮

Filmmakers also excluded Angelina Johnson's role altogether, even though her role in OOTP was meatier than her appearance in GOF, played on screen by Tiana Benjamin. Angelina was the Quidditch captain. When Umbridge kept giving Harry detention Angelina yelled at him in the Great Hall, because his detention cut into Quidditch practice. Angelina was also apart of Dumbledore's Army in the books. She convinced Ron to stay on the Quidditch team after Umbridge took Harry and them off of it

Sirius' death, out of all deaths in HP, was the one that affected me the most. It was such a focal point in the series, especially the books.

With Prisoner of Azkaban I said “After that the dementors can have you” was one of Harry’s two most savage lines. The other one is in this movie: “Sorry Professor, I must not tell lies.”

J. K. Rowling said that in later years Dudley and Harry let their children play together though they themselves have little to say to each other. Dudley has grown if but little, and because he made these concessions, he is redeemable. Keep him Telling in the story is one deleted scene that follows book 7: Dudley's dad calls Harry a complete waste of space before the family leaves. Dudley stops and turns to Harry, saying, "I don't think you're a waste of space."

Yeah, a lot of the movies and films seem to be more about how kids are heavily influenced by their parents, and often times don't even act how they truly feel but how to please their parents. Dudley might well have been a great cousin if it wasn't for his parents and aunt; and Malfoy is the same.

Imelda Staunton did a fantastic job playing a character who was more hated than the story's main villain. The fact that Umbridge was more hated than Voldemort himself makes the scene where she gets carried away like firewood by the centaurs that much more satisfying. When I first saw Grawp, I thought he looked like the illustrated kid on the cover of MAD Magazine, Alfred E. Neuman. Also.... Cornelius Fudge, after seeing Voldemort: He's back.... Me, sarcastically: *Gee, if only someone said that the previous year and at the hearing. Oh, wait....*

i really like your personalities and reactions. especially how instead of getting upset with harry for not trying to tell anyone about umbridges torture you understand and advocate for people to speak up for themselves. you guys are really great

I always loved Luna, she's such a different character from everyone else. She's so ethereal, but also so grounded. At times she's spacey, whimsical, imaginative, and others she sees clear through a situation everyone else is dumbfounded.

Hagrids mom was a full giant and his dad was a human making him half giant but Grawpy is full giant… although Grawp is considered “short in stature” amongst other giants.

The only thing that ever held Neville back was his lack of confidence, and Harry helped him with that. There's a reason the Order didn't want to share information with Harry: he doesn't know how to shield himself psychically and has been too young to teach how to do it. Without knowing how, Harry is a walking live microphone, sharing everything he hears and sees with Voldemort. I think they were putting off teaching him until he matured enough to understand what he has to do internally to accomplish it. Hagrid's mama is a giant, fer real. Hagrid's a half-giant half-wizard. His mama was probably about 20-feet tall, but Hagrid's father was of unusually short height. That's why Hagrid is so short (for a half-giant; most half-giants run about 10-feet tall, but Hagrid's only 8-foot). Harry's mother made Harry's father a better man.

Some never catch it or understand but there is a reason Dumbledore prevents Umbridge from evicting Trelawney from Hogwarts. The prophecy could only be retrieved by onevwhom the prophecy was about, or by the one who made the prophecy, a witness to the prophecy. So Trelawney made the prophecy, Dumbledore Witnessed it, it was about Voldemort and Harry. Its not even fully explained in the books, but if Trelawney had been banished from the grounds, she wouldve been easy for Voldemort to capture her and force her to take the prophecy for him. Dumbledore knew and protected her.

James Potter definitely went through a “Jerk Phase”. After Harry saw Snape’s memory he was stressin about it so he talked to Sirius. Sirius made it very clear that they were all young and stupid and loved causing trouble. James Potter grew up and matured, and joined the first Order of the Phoenix which faught against Voldemort and the Death Eaters the first time.

@@OphepheVanessa Without giving the rest of the series away, Snape hates James because he was always bullying him for no reason, and another reason which appears in Deathly Hallows Part 2. I don’t think Snape hates James because of what Sirius did, because James actually saved Snape. When Harry secretly talked to Sirius and Lupin through Umbrige’s fire, Sirius and Lupin made it VERY CLEAR that James matured past those bullying days, hence why James wanted to join the Order of the Phoenix.

Lupin had a blind eyes to all of James and Sirus faults. Even Sirus death was a direct effect of his ill treatment of Kreacher. James and Sirus were only nice to people they liked

After Sirius dies & goes through the veil, the reason they muted out Harry screaming out in pain was bc Daniel (Harry) did it so well that people on set couldn't stop crying. Including Emma (Hermione) & Helena (Bellatrix).

one of my favorite details in this movie is when McGonagall steps down on the stairs from Umbridge, she's not yielding her power, she is stepping in the direction of the students. she stands in front of them protect them because she will always care about them more then anything.

In the book, Cho wasn't the one who told Umbridge. It was Cho's friend Marietta Edgecombe, after her moms job was threatened. Hermione jinxed the list everyone signed, so Marietta ended up with boils on her face that spelled Sneak. Kingsley also put a charm spell on her, so when Umbridge questioned her in the room with Fudge and Dumbledore, she couldn't snitch on them anymore. Harry and Neville not only share the parental situation, they were born on the same day and the prophecy could have been about either of them, but Voldemort chose Harry.

I lowkey want y’all to watch films 6-7 straight without stops cause waiting for y’all’s reactions is hurtin my chest 😭😭😭. Also, Dudley, like Draco, is a product of his environment. They both realize their parents were trash and try to do better 🥴. ONE MORE, Harry screaming when Sirius was killed was real. Daniel Radcliffe just lost his grandma I think that day, so that wasn’t acting. That was a real reaction.

that scream was edited in, there was a different scream but it made emma and helena cry on set so they had to cut it and it was also more respectful towards daniel to cut it anyway. daniel i think got the phone call right before shooting that scene and i think because of it when harry lost sirius he probably just remembered the phone call too clearly.

Where exactly does Draco try to do better?

People hate Umbridge even more than Voldemort. I think it's because she "hits more close to home" in that, people could EASILY see themselves having a teacher like her, and that's pretty scary.

Harry has saved over half of the Weasleys. He saved the girl in the chamber, the father from the snake, and Ron from the lake.

In the book, Bellatrix hits Sirius with an unknown spell and he falls into the Veil. In the movie, she says the Killing Curse and the light is green so she absolutely murdered him & he STILL falls into the veil (which is why there's no body). And they muted Harry screaming/crying after Sirius's death because it was too heartwrenching on set for everyone there to hear. Draco had said he hoped Hermione would be killed by Salazar's monster. Draco is 100% on his dad's side. BUT there is a deleted scene from the 8th film that changes some things. And in the 7th film, there's a deleted scene that redeems Dudley and Aunt Petunia (a little).

Luna Lovegood is my second favorite character in the series. She was perfectly cast and perfectly introduced. Evanna Lynch is Luna!

this is why the stuff in Goblet of Fire was important.... Remember when fake Moody was teaching class in Goblet, he taught all 3 curses: The first was the Imperio Curse... 2nd was the Crutiatus Curse and third was the Avada Kadabra Curse (the Killing curse) Imperio can cause perfect mind control, which is why fake Moody can control the bug perfectly.... Crutiatus was the torture curse, it makes you have excruciating pain, the reason why Neville was the one to raise his hand and mention it was because that was the spell they used on his parent before they kill them. After class, we saw Neville feeling sad and next to a rainy window is because he is traumatized by the spell that harmed his family. So bottomline, u already saw what the spell does, it was what Moody used on the bug, and also Voldemort use it a bit on Harry at the graveyard at the end of Goblet of Fire.

I love love LOVE that y'all picked up on the duality and foils between Snape's relationship with Harry and Harry's father, and Draco and his father's relationship. I think it's so telling that who we end up as isn't always us making choices to be certain ways. We have to take into account our environment and how we were raised.

Harry knows what it's like to be bullied too, between his aunt and uncle and Malfoy... and now he discovers his dad was like them as a teenager. 😕 anyway, loved the reaction ❤

This has been a really fun reaction series. Great observations and some really hilarious one-liners too (not sure anything will top “she’s single now” at the climax of the 4th movie though 😂☠️ ) As some have already said, Neville’s parents were driven to insanity by Bellatrix’s Cruciatus curse and have to live under constant care (really their state is something comparable to late stage dementia or Alzheimer’s; they can’t even speak.) In the book Harry discovers this when they go to visit Mr. Weasley in the hospital after the snake attack. They also find Gilderoy Lockhart in the same closed ward. Of course, he doesn’t remember much of anything so it’s just a demonstration of how important your memory is to your identity.

Though I feel as though Lockhart was the same just had the evil removed. So then he became a nice himbo lol. It was like the ideal state for him. Yeah I like that moment of “shock” at the comment about Cho being single 🫨😂

one of my favorite things in this book is when dumbledore and voldemort have their fight, there's no indication that dumbledore is even breaking a sweat. also, voldemort retreated from harry's mind not because he thought of his friends, but because he thought of sirius and "if i die, at least i'll be with him." since voldemort is terrified of dying, and harry's grief was so overwhelming, he couldn't stand it in there.

Harry was actually very distraught about how his father was in Snape's memory. He consulted Sirius (and Remus being there) through the fire about that behaviour.

The golden snitch comment about Cho was great 😂

33:12 it’s the torture cruse. In the last movie Barty crouch Jr (one of the two involve with the assault of the longbottom family) demonstrated this vary curse right in Neville face which is why he was left in a traumatized state after that class. In the books we do see Neville’s parents in a hospital in borderline vegetative states barely alive and barely living. Neville and his grandmother visit them every year but it’s unlike that they’ll ever recover till the day they die.

You've both made really insightful comments about Snape throughout the movies and I'll just say your intuition is excellent. No spoilers but I'll just say that the books' author actually met with Alan Rickman, the actor who plays Snape, personally before the films began and revealed something of Snape's character that made him tailor his performance a certain way. She felt the need to tell him something yet not tell secretes to any other actors. No one at the time of filming these movies knew how things were going to end until I think movie 6, so whatever she told him she must have felt was very important to shaping Snape on screen. (This movie I think came out just before the last book did, so the actors may indeed have known the ending by the next movie.)

I usually skip this one during a rewatch, because the literal child torture is hard for me to watch. I love that you guys are just flying through these though! I once took one of those silly "What Hogwarts Professor Are You?" quizzes, fully expecting to get Professor Lupin. I got...Umbridge. I was so upset, that I had to sit in my feelings for a bit and question all my life choices. lol

James, Harry's father, did get better when he got older, which is why Lilly, Harry's mom, ended up with him. Also, James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter made the Marauders Map when they were kids. The Cruciatus curse is a torture curse, one of the 3 unforgivable curses. In order to do any of them you have to feel genuine hatred and desire to cause unspeakable pain, which is why Harry was unable to cause as much damage with Crucio as a Death Eater would, despite his fury over Bellatrix killing Sirius; he's just not that kind of person.

I have enjoyed watching you discover the HP series 😊. I did hear you say in the beginning Hermione and OOTP and this so drives me crazy. I like Hermione's character, but the writer for the movies loved Emma and gave her so many lines or actions that were not hers it drives me crazy. It's the reason so many reactors who haven't read the books say the same thing. Book 1 she panicked in the Devils snare, and Ron helped her get a grip and get out of it. Book 2 she didn't even know what mudblood meant and didn't act upset about it. Ron had to explain It to her. It was Ron who told Harry, "Even in the Wizarding world, hearing voices is not good. Book 3 most of the book Harry and Ron weren't talking to her because they were mad at her. It was Harry that figured out they should save Buckbeak not Hermione. She did not throw Harry into the whomping willow that is just stupid. It was actually her cat Crookshanks that pushes a knob on the tree and it stops flailing so they can enter the tunnel. It was Ron on his broken foot who stood up to Sirius and said you have to kill us to get to Harry, Not Hermione. Dobby helped Harry find the room of requirement, not Hermione and so many more especially in the nextc3 movies I do not want to spoil things. Hermione is important but so is Ron and they took a lot from Ron and even Harry in the books so it seems neither can do anything without her. They really dumbed down Ron's character in the movies. I hope with the reboot they give Ron his due. Another content creator called Movie flame did a video about this subject you should look it up if interested.

All that being said the boys STILL would have died without Hermione and she's still the best character in the series LOL. Also, that account of what happened with the Devil's Snare is not exactly accurate. Hermione still freed herself from it first. She began to panic after, when Ron and Harry couldn't get out. Yet despite her panic she still knew light would kill it, but couldn't think of how to generate light. Yes, Ron told her to use the spell, but the fact remains he couldn't get himself out and she could. Also, she had only known she was a witch for like 9 months at that point. The idea of using magic didn't come naturally to her.

Just to clear it up, Hagrid’s dad was a wizard and his mom was a giant. Hagrid is half giant while Grawp is a full blooded giant. So it wasn’t Hagrid’s mom but his dad who was into the freaky bizz 👀

Umbridge gives me flashbacks to when I was a kid😂 I’m left handed, and I went to a Catholic elementary school; My teacher use to tie my left hand to my desk for the entire day while forcing me to write with my right because she thought left handed people were evil😂 my right hand would cramp so bad. She was extremely old, but that was only like 18 years ago😂 teachers like Umbridge definitely exist, but this movie actually made me feel a bit better about it when it came out a couple years later

Don’t quote me on this, but I heard somewhere that the scream after Sirius’ death was real. Apparently Daniel Radcliffe’s grandma passed away the morning they filmed that scene. He was in so much grief and pain that even the cast was scared.

I’m finished. This is the best reaction I’ve seen of the Harry Potter series. Youse lot are really engaging and it’s absolutely hilarious. 24:39: “Last time, he got petrified. If you watch closely you see one of the cats in the plate near the door leave through a 'cat door' when they enter. THIS is how Umbitch knew they were in her office, it alerted her.

The craziest part is, Muggles can't see Dementors so Dudley is having a WILD time in that tunnel - rewatch it with the understanding he can't see the Dementors and realise how terrifying the whole experience must have been.

This is the only movie in the series that Steve Kloves stepped down as the screenwriter and instead Michael Goldenburg replaced him which makes this movie unique among others in terms of characterization, balance in pacing and tone, humor and action.

People would avoid looking in telephone booths. They'd just rush by. Nowadays, Superman would have to change in his car or in a Starbucks bathroom.

It's called Avada Kedavra guys lol. It's the killing curse. It instantly kills the person. The curse used on Neville's parents was the Cruciatus Curse, which is basically torture and excruciating pain. Bellatrix Lestrange tortured Neville's parents to the point where they went insane. They fought it and refused to reveal information. They were real ones for that, so Neville comes from good stock forreal.

Notice how when umbridge is encountered with danger, she hides behind the kids, but then when snape encounters danger, he has the kids get behind him.

The Cruciatis Curse is one of the three Unforgivable Curses. It’s the “torture curse”. Bellatrix tortured them for hours upon hours because they wouldn’t give her information until finally their minds broke. They’ve been living in the magical mental hospital since then, Neville visits them regularly but they don’t know who he is.

"It was foolish of you to come here tonight, Tom." Always gonna be one my favorite lines.

keep Dudley! It was this scene that makes him realize Harry saved him. Disappointing as it was not shown in the movies that they end up reconciling. You really do miss quite a bit not reading the books, they explain a lot of what's going on especially with Voldemort. Excited for the next one!

Hermoine doesn’t really say Voldemort’s name much because people like her (mudbloods/muggle-borns) are his main targets for torture and killing. In the past when somebody said his name it would alert deatheaters to their location and they would be murdered. Since they know he is back, that practice could return.

In the book, Umbridge revealed that she was the one that sent the Dementers after Harry Potter. I wish they had put that in the movie.
