Maybe it’s just me but I feel Patek over the recent years have lost their way from their timeless and elegant designs with a move towards trends.

I totally agree. I can appreciate Patek's for quality craftsmanship but to be honest the more current designs and colourways are not to my taste. So many other superb watches can be purchased for a fraction of the price.

Patek trades on exclusivity and meticulous craftsmanship. They still make spectacular watches. Makers of mechanical watches are very much aware the clientele for watches such as a traditional, dress watch such as the Calatrava is a dying breed to sone extent. These companies go where the money is. Define recent years? I’d suggest that’s simply post Quartz Crisis Patek, along with everyone else to a large extent. The Golden Age of the 40s through the 60’s is long gone. Just look at the catalogues of the Holy Trinity, throw in Universal Geneve- throw in Omega for giggles and look at what they offered during those three decades alone. It’s long gone. AP in particular among the Holy Three has strayed away from elegant dress watches. Patek, you can still very much buy an elegant spare Calatrava. vacheron Constantin, same thing, they have plenty of elegant watches within their catalogue and you’re welcome to buy. They aren’t the focus of their marketing nor do they get much attention from social media. They do offer them. My biggest gripe would be proportions, they lack in that department to a vintage piece and you aren’t going to see much in the way of engine turned dials. Look at so idk media - even a channel like this, focused on the finer things in life, it’s all pretty much focused on high end tool watches. That’s simply where the interest is at the moment. I do think dressier, or perhaps simply less tool watches inspired watches are making inroads, but the needle has barely moved, until that happens, not much will change.

I have fallen out of love with watches over the past few years. Whilst I am not ready to agree with my wife’s opinion on all watches that they just tell the time, I must admit that I am coming round to the conclusion that you buy one (or two) and you have every watch that you need.

I don't really care for a super expensive Rolex and would also be just as fine with a Seiko for minimalism. I appreciate your response. By the way I had a few pocket watches but donated them since they are outdated these days. I wish I would've kept them though as they are historical pieces. Talking of so called big watches, I often wear my Seiko 'Arnie'. And you know, people shouldn't be put of by 44/45 mm watches - another big one that springs to mind is the Marathon Jumbo (lovely watches, they also do a large and a medium). Really if your wrists are medium to large (not necessarily large) you will get used to the watch, in my opinion just follow the basic rules - if the lugs go over the top/bottom of your wrist then it's probably a bit big for you and always try the watch on at the Jewler's first (even if you don't buy it there).

Other than the brown Cartier none of these releases do anything. Then again, I'm a chap more interested in the micro brand space. In fact, my watch of choice for every day wear is a Reverie Diver in red with a 12-hour bezel. The value for money for that watch is NUTS. Also, everyone who sees that watch on me asks me about it, or asks if they can buy it off me. I am curious though, if a watch brand asked you to come up with some watches in non-traditional colours like red, what would you choose?

Don’t forget mechanical watches need ‘regular’ cleaning / servicing. I took my Rolex Oyster, bought new in 1986, into the Rolex service centre this week. Another solid gold gold video Ash, excuse the pun! The modern day level of hype always far exceeds the reality of new Rolex releases, some of which I imagine is from grey dealers hoping to increase demand for their stock. Rolex released pretty much what I'd expect. Imagine if the Tudor colour & metal releases of the past few years wore Rolex badges, the internet would melt. I like the look of the 1908 but for that money I'd prefer the newly released rose gold Cartier Santos large on alligator, with a pair of rose gold Love cufflinks and a damn good holiday. I'm visiting New Bond Street later this week and will try and have a look at the new brown dial large Santos, I'm rather taken with your new acquisition! Kind regards, Rob.

Would it be possible to do a video on the day-to-day experience of owning a, however small, collection of quality watches? Suggested topics includes aspects like "hidden costs", e.g. insurance, regular services, etc. Safety concerns, like where to keep your collection: at home, in a safe, or in a bank valve? The risk of exposing your watches on social media. Wearing a desirable watch "in the open" with short or rolled up sleeves. At an airport: do you recommend wearing your watch on the wrist through security or take it off and put it on the plastic tray? Recommended travel cases for watches? Do you wind all your watches every other day or so to make sure they are functioning OK, or do you put them on a watch winder? Pros and cons of watch winders? Do you tend to wear your watches with more complications, like the GMT-Master II more often, because they are more of a nuisance to set? Accuracy issues: does your Rolex's keep time within the promised + - 2 seconds? Does professional watches with rotating bezels slip under the cuffs of your dress shirts or do they fray the cuffs prematurely? And so on, ... on the long and winding road to Chap Nirvana...
