How come Virgin, Branson or anyone else never mentions or gives any credit to Burt Rutan who was the designer/inventor of Spaceship One?? Without Burt none of this would be possible. One of the greats in all of Aviation History.

@Spacefan21 Balls as in male testicles. As the saying goes you need to have "big balls/testicles" to do something brave or dangerous. This type of comment is a joke in reference to that, basically saying that the spacecraft couldn't possibly make it to space with the heavy/big balls/testicles of the pilots.

Yep 100% This "event" had been achieved in the 1960s, e.g., the X-15: dropped from a jet airplane (bomber) and rocketed to the "edge of space" (aircraft speed record still unbroken 1967). This little Virgin craft is an achievement for Branson ... but, of little merit as far as space travel. Branson technically went into space, but did not achieve escape velocity or achieve orbit. Had this little craft achieved orbit, it would have been burned to a crisp on re-entry. Like you say "just a plane ride" ... a thrill-ride for the super rich. For space enthusiasts this was sort of a stunt. I don't think you'll see commentator Felix Schlang getting excited about this one. Now back to the real deal: SPACEX ! ! !

To enter a stable orbit the Virgin craft would need to go 7 times as fast and the direction of travel parallel to the earths surface. So yes it is just a parabolic flight that is producing the zero gravity. This can be accomplished in any airplane, the faster the airplane the longer zero G achievable . A Cessna 150 might give you a few seconds of zero G, a passenger jet maybe 30 seconds and at 4,000 km/h the Virgin craft achieves a few minutes and goes really high. In essence it is a very expensive joy ride. At 8:53 the pilot notes “there’s apogee “ . Buzz Lightyear would call it “Falling with style “

@@21sungalute.42 The vomit comet is probably many time as safe, and when someone throws up the vomit floats around for only 30 seconds, not 5 minutes. Some years ago I had a job flying a long range corporate jet. These sort of aircraft are certified to 51 thousand feet, 10 thousand higher than a 737. The highest I ever went was 48 thousand, from that altitude earths curvature is perceivable an the daylight sky directly above ( which you can see from the front window) is noticeably darker. The air is rather thin and if the airplane sprang a leak, without oxygen mask useful consciousness is about 30 seconds.
