People beg out of desperation and out of feeling worthless. Part of the reason why he cried as he looked up is because for the first time, in what seems like a long while, he felt that he earned that money. He felt his own worth and value as a human being. He felt that, even though he did what any other decent human being would've done, atleast it was something to earn that reward. He felt dignity and self worth. Always treat people with respect, it costs nothing.
