🙏If you're down here, maybe you know a gamer who wants to transform their life.
When you watch how much time energy and effort they put into those games you probably feel like there is a lot of "wasted" potential.
Maybe they're doing it to escape the hard challenge of managing their life, you know it's not easy, but it has to be done.
If their life was designed to be as fulfilling as their favorite game, Imagine how much they would enjoy managing it.
I can't go back in time and help the overweight, miserable kid I was.
But I know I can help those who are going through that rut right now.
I want to help them but I can't do it alone.
Please share this video with the person you're thinking of.
We'll all thank you for it after.😊

I was just watching a band last night and started thinking about this. They’ve spent countless hours practicing their instruments and it’s mostly an internal reward of voluntary effort. Then I thought about all the voluntary tasks I’ve mostly avoided, like fitness, and couldn’t figure out why it was something I was never passionate about or internally driven to succeed at.

  • @LifeGameDesign

I've found that the internal reward that you get is not something that you can foresee - it's something that has to be "play-tested" in games like skyrim, fallout etc where there is a lot of playstyle choice you have to experiment to see what you actually like before you actually develop the drive to put more hours into it. It's also the reason why parents get us to try so many things when we are young to discover what we are intrinsically inclined to - then they help us develop our passion further once we find something we are interested in. We have to be the game designers of our own lives, experiment with what we think we would like and go on the journey of discovery.

I think a major factor in games that motivates people to expend effort is that reward structure is well defined. Even if there is RNG with loot drops there are plenty of progression options that are not random. In real life that is true for some things like working out but not true for career advancement. You can put in high effort and not get significant raises or any promotions. You can put in minimum effort, which is sometimes almost nothing, and still get paid the same. I have done both in my career. Minor effort and job hopping got me to upper middle class income. Hard work and loyalty got me at or below inflation level raises. That is why being productive in real life is not very motivating. Rewards are arbitrary for many things. Imagine a game where xp was rewarded at random times. Sometimes you got xp for completing a quest. Sometimes you were afk. Sometimes you were chatting about non-game things. Would anyone want to play that or understand the progression system?

  • @LifeGameDesign

There's an underlying reason why the reward system of modern life is so unsatisfying. at 10:50 I mention in the video about the contrast of Game Designers, Business owners, and ourselves. How much time have game designers spent making a fulfilling rewards system for their specific game? How much time have we spent making a fulfilling rewards system for our specific lives? If you live by default - you are forced to live by the external rewards system that others give to you - especially in business, only rewarding you when you get a promotion, or are extremely productive. If you live by design you can find what is truly fulfilling to you and reward yourself with visual and physical rewards that will help you do more of what you love. So much nuance to this I need to cover in a specific video but please do not fall into the trap of copying a rewards system from a game and thinking it will work IRL - that would be cringification.

I've actually used that trifecta to improve myself over the past year, and I haven't realised until now but I was almost checking it off like a game. I essentially gave myself goals to achieve in each of these 3 parts, and decided that I would need to improve a little bit on the cumulative value of these 3 every week. If I didn't achieve anything at work (applying for jobs but not being hired), I'd have to 'level up my social skills' by going out more and do the same for my health with proper nutrition/sleep/exercise. Conversely, If work and health were doing great, I could allow some slack on social front (and game as an extra reward?). At work I've also taught myself to have a bit of a breather every time I finish up a task properly. Getting done with a task, or for a big task a subtask, is starting to feel like dopamine hits every time. The grindy tasks I approach as "brrr numbers go up", and we all know games like that. All the meanwhile I'm leveling up my work experience so I can look for the next step I in my career. The more you split your life into small chunks, then creating an overarching picture of progress, the easier it becomes.

This is Exactly What Life Game Design is About !!! On the part of rewards - trying to force life to be like traditional games where you get rewards will fail you in the long run - ( most people think of leisure) On the theme of Ali Abdaal's new Book - Feel Good Productivity and Essentialism by Greg Mckweon - Leisure should be and is a natural part of life that we shouldn't have to work for to earn. The best way to use rewards is to treat them like weapon upgrades. - When you use a certain weapon in a game, you use that to get better weapons. Reward yourself by giving yourself things that will help you do the thing you are trying to achieve - for me at the gym - I bought myself a lifting belt after hitting 140kgs on the Deadlift to be able to hit higher numbers. If your reward isn't tied to the thing you're trying to do there is no point. - However, This is assuming that you've built Leisure into your life already.

@@LifeGameDesign today I found out 140kg deadlift is a lot 😅 I don't really do deadlifts because I don't want to do that to my back, but as someone that has naturally strong legs and has gone to the gym for 2 months; I'm doing leg extensions of 100kg for 10 reps. Does that about hold up to the deadlift?

@@Olav_Hansen yooo that's awesome! No need to compare the numbers, just the idea of rewarding yourself internally first, and being really careful of giving yourself physical rewards and focusing primarily on internally fulfilling rewards - I do this by listing all my achievements on the LGD app in notion but there are things like habit trackers etc Also Dammmn bro if you hit 100kgs on leg extensions in two months you got some mad legs haha -

Video games are actually one of the major influences behind this book I’m writing called “The Road Ranger.” The story is about Matt Santos, a young Calivadan Army Ranger war veteran who comes home from war after finishing his military service of six years to find his mom and stepdad going through a bad patch. Weeks later however, Matt’s mother dies from a sniper gunshot wound but strangely his stepfather was spared. His lady friend in the FBI, Maria Garcia, promises to him that she will find justice on his behalf but this idea is shot down almost immediately by her superiors. Giving this news to Matt leaves him in distraught and Maria feeling like a failure. However after overhearing a man spell out his mother’s name, Matt kidnaps said suspect and goes on a rampage to find the one responsible for his mother’s death. What he doesn’t realize however is that the one responsible for his mother’s death is much closer than he thinks. I personally use video games like Fallout 4 to create physical representations of the characters in my book like Matt Santos and Maria Garcia. I even act them out in situations where they’re confronted in certain situations. For example if Matt is confronted by someone who has murdered a woman and her child, he would gun down that murderer immediately. No due process whatsoever. On top of the aforementioned game, I utilize mods to make fully accurate representations of my characters. Besides this storybook, I’m about to start a sword and sorcery fantasy that takes inspirations from Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. I’m even using the game with mods to create physical representations of the main characters in that story and act out their personalities in that game. Eventually however I do hope to merge both of these stories together with the main characters of both stories forming a five-man band team. With the Army Ranger as the leader, the FBI chick as the lancer, the Computer Hacker (in the Road Ranger story) as the smart guy, the axe-wielding Nordic Barbarian as the big guy, and the Elven Sorceress as the heart. I may eventually add in a sixth ranger to that team and more likely than not, they will be from the same world as the Barbarian and the Sorceress. But yeah nobody has the right to say video games are a waste of time. Because it can yield a host of benefits one may not realize. Apart from the creativity I now have to write a fictional story or two, video games can also yield critical thinking skills and increased dexterity. Even though my gaming habits are not what they once was, I still play video games into my late 20s. I just won’t spend hours and hours and hours playing them anymore. Like all things in life, one should take moderation into account.

@@LifeGameDesign Apart from Fallout games like New Vegas and 4, I've been extensively exposed to Punisher comic books and movies along with the more recent TV show on Netflix. As far as when it'll be released, that's not yet known even though I'm actually almost done to completing the manuscript. The story idea is actually a rewrite of an old story I wrote years ago. Most of the plot elements from the original story remains largely the same. With one major difference being the opening. In the original, the protagonist participates in his last military engagement which although is bloody, isn't really connected with the main story. In the rewrite however, that is completely ditched though it is somewhat hinted at. Instead the opening has the protagonist go over his desire in wanting justice, his fear in dying or going to jail, and his misbelief in his mother being innocent and undeserving of her tragic fate. This is basically going over his internal conflict which the external conflict soon follows with him killing gangsters in a warehouse. The next chapter actually rewinds a few weeks before that event which by the midpoint will really make sense why he was there at that warehouse in the first place.
