Correction: Since publishing this video some issues have been resolved. - It's much harder to take high quality images from the site. - You also get customer information (on the shipping label).

First of all, they do share the buyer's information. When I sell something on the site they send me a shipping label with the buyer's name and address! Second of all, none of my images are available as "prints." They already are original prints (etchings). If someone wanted to "steal" an image they're not getting anything like the original. Besides, this is a problem for any artist with a website.

Every artist faces this, all art needs to be uploaded, isn't it, for selling. And I have suffered many times when other artists have actually tampered and copied my art and uploaded on the same platform of another online art gallery, what can we do! We can't sit with our paintings,we have to show them, so finally letting go of all fears and continuing to make art and post art!

Fear is definitely not a good idea indeed for artists. It's good that you point that out. But some platforms are more vulnerable others so choose your platforms wisely.

ps: No not every artist faces this because you don't have to do this. 1920x1920 or whatever it was is waaaay bigger then necessary for online consumption which enables hackers to use it for print potential while not adding anything to the viewing experience. The right approach should've been to make the images much smaller (use 'lesser' quality images) while presenting them on their website.

Hi Dries, I am very glad you brought this subject up and gave us a good insight of what is what. For one, I have always long suspected the up and downloading of images, meaning being able to be stolen. The other thing that has kept me thinking is, these online galleries take a good percentage of the commission, as do the real galleries. Saatchi takes 35%, as you mentioned and others take 50% even. The difference usually is, real galleries then take everything on themselves, whilst the online ones put the onus and responsibilities on the artist. Thanks for the rest of the information. All the best Zeal.

  • @driesketels

I once saw a photo I posted on social media printed on a t-shirt being worn by a person in another country I visited. I didn't get a chance to ask the person where the shirt was from because I was inside a train. That same image was digitally altered (looked like basic vectoring) by a street artist which he used for his promotion materials in a solo exhibit held a hotel I stayed in years later. Neither was done with my consent or knowledge. I have stopped being bullish about anything related to online. I was sharing below 1900 pixels wide. Good information in regards to the pitfalls...be careful, you could be labeled a contrarian 😂 but it is true, the legwork to sell on your own website is hard and time consuming, many hats have to be worn and a lot of them a creative person won't want to wear as it takes away from the creating process BUT the alternative (i.e. gallery ,other platform) is always the middleman, and it's ok, as long as he likes to eat and you dont mind that he makes up the menu price and keeps the menu most of the time 😂 it's a choice....a hard one...

Such publicity would simply mention what has happened and promise even much improved services for the collectors and the artists. Thanks for the video.

Legit paranoia here. The only way to not have your art stolen online is to never put it online. All reward requires a level of risk. If you don't put your art out there it is a guarantee that NO ONE will ever buy it. I've been a commercial artist for 20 years, I've seen folks rip off my work. While they are doing that I'm a step ahead creating something new. This guy has another video where he tells you how to sell on the same website and how to make $8500 a month on instagram. If I were making that a month I certainly wouldn't be wasting my time posting videos on youtube.

I once had a Saatchi account about 10 years ago. All of my work is digital, such as photographs and digital illustrations. After 2 years at Saatchi with no sales I deleted my art and closed my account. I have had more luck selling thru stock photo agencies, such as Robert Harding, Cavan, and Adobe Stock. They only display small versions and watermark the images to make it harder for thieves to copy them. But those types of agencies are not for painters or sculptors who make physical material artwork. Stock agencies only work with digital media.

Well that is a very very strong decision that has some risk connected to it as well. In the end you don't want to limit your growth because of an ethical fear or some other fear so be careful. Don't take anything that people are saying online, including myself too literal, there's always some kind of loss of information when you try to express something in a KZread video... Some of the info here is well known to people with some web knowledge (for instance many companies upload full sized files, expecting to only make the compressed file public with file extension à la "artwork-700x300.jpg" when in fact using hard URL full version is accessible by just typing the same address but using "artwork.jpg"). BUT what I didn't know was the print-on-demand thing... Hadn't check the website for ages. And the dodgy use of Saatchi name... No wonder so many little know digital artists have started including Saatchi in their CV and pop up in the Google Search. That itself is good PR, but worthless in the grander scheme of things. PS: Same applies to Instagram. I don't know if it still the case but larger sized files used to be there for picking with little view source and URL knowledge. On a certain level it is actually good for those who photograph real paintings with real texture and possibly a little angle, since it would look stupid to just print it out.

When I used it last time it was train on real photos and when I upscaled some paintings (to set as my desktop wallpaper) it produced some weird textures as if they were organic.. That's why I make videos and I prefer now to post videos, slideshows and montages rather than just straight off images. The problem is it is hard to get anyone to watch the videos. Even harder to get the proper watch time. No watch time and the reels and videos don't go to anyone. And you don't want to show entertaining content. You want to show what you create which is sort of like a promotional advertisement.

I am extremely satisfied with Saatchi. This guy is just putting out lies. Possibly he did not sell well and that is his revenge now. Most of what he is claiming is not true. • @truecinnamon

Disagree. When I have sold on Saatchi, who I would still recommend, you get print-out for shipping label to affix to box/tube. Thereon name, phone number etc.. I have thereby called and thanked customers also. And can contact directly subsequently. Saatchi otherwise unscrupulous? Isn't much of art-world and world in general? I'll try and do a painting of unscrupulous people one day. P.S. I have impression that at least some of Saatchi curators have gone Woke. In that: its not originality, or accomplishment, it's identity that's promoted. Not the Johnny Depp, Hunter Biden identity thing. Selling a name/label. Like a handbag, watch, or some such like. Something else. P.P.S. Is obscene profiteering &c. OK, as long as it's Woke? P.P.P.S. Johnny Depp certainly treats artists who are in contrast to him unknown, with an immense respect. Righteous for that. I am amused at people who buy his Art only. They're buying a name. The "Art" is I am informed, overpainted giclee, which prints were produced from photoshoped images. Correct me if wrong please.
