I feel I need to correct a couple of things said on that video : - The Elinchrom promo did with the guy in the sky was a promo for the ELB1200, not for the ELB500TTL - The flash duration on the ELB500TTL is the shortest at the lowest power setting (and in the Action mode), because it's a IGBT circuitry which cuts the flash curve. What you said is true for voltage controlled flash units like the Elinchrom ELC Pro HD which have their shortest flash durations at power levels around 3.4 - The power levels can now be changed remotely and independantly for each head. Your video was done before the firmware update so you were right at the time. As an Elinchrom user, one thing I don't see mentionned anywhere is that, to my knowledge, Elinchrom Skyport is the only radio transmission system that permits individual flash units adjustments for each independant flash in the same group.

I have been using the Elinchrom ELB 400 and the Quadra Ranger system for a few years for shooting dirt track, sprint car racing. (at night) I use it both with the head mounted on a flash bracket, and more often, multiple units on light stands. It has been a reliable system despite the somewhat flimsy heads. Norman and Lumedyne are the old school standards in the field it seems. I chose Elinchrom for the short flash duration capabilities. It depends on the photographer’s personal style, but I usually like to make ‘frozen’ shots, the Elinchrom really excels at that. I have yet to meet another photographer at a track using Elinchrom, and that’s kinda cool lol.

Great video, but how about one dealing with flash triggers, how to 'match' them to cameras, and the difference between them, aka TTL (hot shoe), VS PC cable sync, as with leaf shutter lenses ( mf and lf film cameras) the hot shoe shorts out the advanced electronics, or you can't use a sync cable to communicate as you can on dslr's. So having the compatibility issues explained clearly will help in making an informed decision about what brand is right for you.

Great kit. I do however feel that the heads are a little bit delicate. Too many plastic parts that can break; this happened to me with a Quadra head (maybe the ELB is more rugged) and I look after my kit. Also, though the Elinchrom modifiers are excellent, the adaptor and standard bayonet system is clunky and difficult to use, especially outside on cold days. I've used this system a lot and often have to check and double check that a soft-box is correctly mounted (never an issue with Bowens' 'S' or Profoto). Also, as demonstrated in this video from a dropped reflector, the thin aluminium of the mount means that the bayonet will only work with a bit of panel beating. How often will this weakness result in an unusable accessory?

  • @christydean3552

Flash heads do work well but battery feels limited in colder weather. (Canada) The snap in kind of connection on the heads are plastic and have snapped off within a year of use and cannot be fixed. That is when continually used with the support for heavier sofboxes as instructed. 😢 new softbox ring design with little metal toggles can cut the inside of your softbox if not always snapped back into position. (ie. using the universal ring with 8 toggles when you have a softbox with only 4 toggles used the others can snap out and rip the box. Disappointed as it was not cheap, I wanted a lighter unit with a battery pack but feel the heads weren’t robust enough to take the weight of a softbox.

Hey guys, I got some cash to spend, Ive never had studio lights before, & I was thinking about some elenchromes, I have mostly shot outdoors, but I wanna get into portrait photography, would you guys go for the battery pack ones, or their indoor only lights, plus do you all have a few more shoots with these so I can see how you all interact with these lights? Thanks to you both! Or, I could go the way of Jasón Lanier with the rotolight, but they are all plastic & the thoughts from many people are that they are cheaply built ☹️, for around the same ish price point. I’m using an A9, any thoughts?

The lights are great, portable and emit light! The nature of the light is no different to any other brand, so don't think you are somehow buying a better light! Light is light. The thing that you need to note if you are price conscious is the cost of the accessories and the adaptors required, if like me you have other standard Elinchrom heads/boxes etc. Basically you need to buy 2 kits of 2, to give 4 lights. Mainly you will use 1-3 but if you ave an issue with a head or need the added 4 its advisable. I have lots of Elinchrom heads etc from the 90's and they are still serviceable and powerful. One other important consideration is the umbrella hole is too small for anything but an Elinchrom brolly and they are expensive...

I was planning on buying this for location work and I was starting out as well so I had nothing, just to have two heads that I could separate using the same power pack is cool but then I'd have to look at extension cable, also only 1 battery not two so I'd have to buy another, no transmitter for the pack not even one of the older basic systems just a pc sync cable, having to split the power when using two heads, that charge time of 100 minutes is a long time when you run out of juice on a shoot. So since I wasn't to concerned about weight or flash duration for what I have planned I'm going to by the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra 400 as a rim or fill light and getting a Elinchrom Ranger RX speed AS with a studio head that would be my main light source, also since the pack is heavy I can use it as a weight on the stand. All of this is cheaper than the ELB 500 and I have money to spend on stands, light modifiers and accessories. Great video I certainly enjoyed it!

After reviewing the specs between the ELB400 and the ELB500 I think I’ll stay with the 400. The ELB400 has Hi Sync which allows much better lighting in bright sun conditions and the Action head has a shorter flash duration @ power (140 WS) which is better for freezing action in the studio. I always shoot in manual mode with my Sony A 7iii anyway to control as much as possible in the shot.

Having not used the Eli system, I do have another question. The soft boxes front diffuser goes right up to the front edge. I know there’s other bits and pieces, but how do you feel about that compared to others (eg. Profoto/bron) being somewhat directional as opposed to if it goes to the edge it will by physics spray light further out.
