What are the best Agaves for your garden? It's determined by several factors. The overall mature size of the Agave is perhaps the most important when thinking about what space it can be used in. But there are also factors such as sharp terminal spines, climate suitability, and aesthetics to consider. In this video, I cover all the different positives and negatives of the most popular Agaves to help folks get a better understanding of which ones to select when planning their garden.
Since Agaves generally have a bold texture, I like to compliment them with ornamental grasses and other plants that have a finer texture. This helps to create texture variation in the landscape which makes your accent plants POP! Use them with smaller foreground succulents to create a layered look. Agaves can also be used to flank walkways to create a grand entrance. The look spectacular in rock gardens, cacti gardens, coastal gardens, and Southwest landscapes.
Here's the Agaves we cover in this video.
Agave geminiflora - Twin Flowered Agave
Agave parryi truncata - Artichoke Agave
Agave victorae-reginae - Queen Victoria Agave
Agave Blue Glow - Blue Glow Agave
Agave attenuata - Foxtail Agave
Agave Blue Flame - Blue Flame Agave
Agave americana - Century Plant
Agave angustifolia Marginata - Caribbean Agave
Agave americana var. Mediopicta Alba - White Striped Century Plant
Agave vilmoriniana - Octopus Agave
Agave desmetiana Variegata - Variegated Smooth Agave
I have selected these because of their popularity and availability. Yes there are many many varieties out there that are fantastic, so feel free to explore and have fun. These are just a few of the Agaves that are tried and true and are great performers in the landscape.
Most of these are native to the Southwestern US and Mexico, so they are very drought tolerant once established. Most require very little maintenance. They are generally deer resistant and are incredibly easy to grow. One thing to note, most Agaves do a have a level of toxins to them which should be considered when planning for your landscape.
I hope this video was helpful..
Happy planting!

Awesome video. Watch out for those terminal spines, everybody.
We have 3 clumps of Agave Americana. Once it has pups it is a lot of maintenence. A local couple who were starting a succulent business pruned out some pups. There were Black Widow Spiders hiding underneath!
Glad to see my favourite species desmetiana

Thank you for the video. It was very informative. I have transformed our public space landscaping with desert themed succulents, with Agave at the center. With the rock flows, it looks great.

I’m always so excited to see a new video pop up, and now more than ever as I just bought a house with a blank slate of a landscape, except for a canary date palm and... a huge century plant. May I suggest two videos? One on the different types of ceonathus and their uses, and another on ceanothus vs plumbago, as it seems to me they have a lot of similarities despite their different origins. Thanks for all you do!

I indeed the Agave blue so like.
Love the info, especially the low tolerance. I am in Northern Ca, Chico in a canyon and we do go down to the high 20’s in the winter and I have lost a few of my new plants. 😢 expensive and frustrating.

I agree with you about agave Blue Glow. It's my favorite because it doesn't produce any pups.
I have many Agave angustifolia Marginata - Caribbean Agave and one is starting to spike. They do propagate and spread. I notice some of my neighbors have now planted them. They are very showy but have to be careful because they are spiny .
I just got an agave pup, I planted it in a pot. I live in Missouri, so It will be brought in for winter. I hope its a slow grower!!!😂
Great video. Thanks I am planning a garden for my new townhouse when the build is finished. I already have some small agave. Some are small {otatorum and a variegated Potatorum kichiokan. A small Victoria and a similar white stripe Schidigera. I just got small agave xylonacantha pup. Aloes are amazing. I think the Blue Glow you featured will also look grea, and wont get too big for my smaller garden areas. Thankyou, I will avoid some of those bigger beauties. Cacti and Aloes thrive in our Australian sun.

Thanks that's a good one. Tell us what to do when they're too big, and when...
@BudgetPlants
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watchin! So if an Agave gets to big for its intended space, there’s a couple things you can do. The first thing would be to transplant it to a larger space. However, transplanting agaves is not an easy task as they are kinda hard to manage. If the transplanting option won’t work, I suggest trimming off the bottom layers of the leaves so it’s more upright and vase-shaped. with that said, if it’s in a spot that poses a threat to people as they walk by because of the spine, I would just suggest to remove it and plant either a smaller non-threatening agave, or something completely different.
I need to get rid of my agave century plants! They are spreading and taking over! I like unusual plants but definitely planted this in the wrong place!
I have a few shark skin agaves and they have been my favorite so far. Hard to find though.

In the UK, Agave americana and Agave parryi are the only two varieties that are winter hardy with good drainage. Some sources say that they can as low as -9C before suffering damage. I am on the South Coast in the UK and several neighbours have them growing in their front gardens. One has a span of over 10 feet. We get regular frosts and mine are outside in a pot all winter.

Ahhh Hahaa… well thanks for watchin. Yeah TX generally gets a little too cool in the winter months for a lot of Agave varieties. There are definitely a handful that can take the low temps though. Good luck on the planting 😎🌱🙏🏼

What some solitary agaves? Ones that don’t pup
I bought 2 Agave Desert Escape last year at Walmart, $20 each, 20" tall+/-. Both are setting flowers this year. I was excited unt8l I read it's going to die! Can I remove the flower to delay death until the pups can grow more? Each has 1-2 little pups.😢
@BudgetPlants
Жыл бұрын
Desert Escape Agaves are beautiful! Unfortunately removing the blooms will not really delay the plant dying. It’s kind of like it’s internal clock. Just harvest any pups you can off the base. You may also be able to harvest pops off the bloom stalk. Good luck!
Do you have video talk about agave disease? Recently, my agaves are having snout agave weevils. Any advices? Thank you

Our Agave (century plant) is blooming. What can we expect after blooming as we hear that plant will die?
@BudgetPlants
Жыл бұрын
Hey! So yes the parent plant will slowly start to die off once the bloom has completed its cycle. The bloom stalk will begin to turn brown and the plants foliage will start dropping and looking ‘tired’. Then will brown out. If there are pups around the parent plant, they will grow up and begin their own life cycle. I’d suggest to let just one or two pups grow as the cluster can look a little unruly. Completely remove the parent plant once it begins to die. Hope this helps!

Hey! I’m not super familiar with it. I’ve only seen a couple of them here in So Cal. It’s considered a tropical or sun tropical Florida native. I’m not sure about how well it may do elsewhere.
Do you cut the flowering stalks down if they get too high?
@BudgetPlants
Жыл бұрын
Yes… These are monocarpic, so once the flower stock dies off you can cut them back.
Are there any non monocarpic varieties that don’t take as long to bloom or bloom more than once?

There is a subspecies of Agave striata called falcata that has been reported to be polycarpic. I personally don’t have experience with it.
