Watch This Before You Buy A Skottle

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Beanie babies. Pogs. And now, skottles. These are fads that we definitely did not see coming, and honestly, looking back they have not aged well. While a skottle is more functional than a pog, it comes with some significant drawbacks relative to alternatives on the market. For starters, there is the price. A skottle retails for $375. The origin of the skottle comes from South Africa, where they love to cook meat. Afrikaans farmers put plow discs over a flame to cook on nearly a century ago, and the basic idea has not really changed much since then. Does that sound like something that should cost even more than a tank of gas or a sheet of plywood?
Another downside to skottles is the size and weight. A skottle weighs 22 pounds and the legs only collapse to 20-inches long when not in use. This isn’t gigantic, but if you are camping with your family in a Jeep Wrangler or Toyota Tacoma you know how valuable space can be. One alternative is the Cadac Safari Chef grill, which is also from South Africa. In fact, Cadac was the first company to mass produce the skottle! You might not be surprised to learn that the Safari Chef functions similarly to a skottle, but adds a wok, griddle, and grate to the flat burner option. Plus, the diffuser on the Safari Chef makes for much more even heat across the cooking surface when compared to a skottle. The Cadac also weighs under ten pounds and nests together to be quite compact. The Cadac Safari Chef grill costs half as much as a skottle, and the removable plates make it easier to clean.
Want to go one step further and be totally minimalist? Bring a JetBoil to heat water and Mountain House or similar freeze-dried meals like backpackers do. Or do what our fathers did for us when we were kids and just purchase a pizza or bucket of chicken for the weekend. Both come in their own box and don’t require any utensils or cleanup! If you still want a skottle that’s cool, just make your purchase with your eyes wide open. Drop a comment below and let me know what you use to cook when you camp!

As a South African and a veteran skottle user a little tip for you. I notice you put the bacon on and then lit the fire. The trick to non-stick skottle cooking is to get the skottle “smoking hot”; then add a teaspoon of sunflower oil and get that up to temperature; then use your first bit of bacon (or whatever you are cooking) to move the oil around the surface to provide the lightest of coats. And then viola - stick free cooking. Also, out of interest, the edges are supposed to be cooler as the temperature gradient can be used to cook different food types at the same time. Happy skottling 👍

I agree with you 100% on the cost of the Scottle. I made my own with a plow disc from tractor supply for about $20. A burner with regulator and 3 ft hose from Amazon for $25. and 1-10’x3/4” emt conduit from Home Depot for $6.00 for the legs, and I bought a stainless steel bowl from Amazon for about $10.00 all in $61.00

But also I can use the Coleman single burner I setup for my disc as a single burner stove.

I can also use the stove to boil water for coffee or dehydrated foods that I eat and drink from one of those $8 Stanley camping kits from Target. Use the skottle on the table and wrap a piece or reflectix around the windy side as a wind screen. Never had an issue. i think the multiple items all cooking and warming on the same surface make the skottle a better choice, in camping i dont care about distinct cooking flavors, I care that the food is hot, each thing is warm and doesn't require multiple cooking surfaces. One surface commanded by one cook who can judge each item within the cooking zone. Likewise one surface to clean. No changing out cooking areas, no one item done before all the others.

The pre-made skottles/discadas are way over priced. I made my own with a Bayou Classic cast iron griddle from amazon. I hate to cook on anything else now when I'm camping. Cleanup is easier with a fiber brush and you don't need to buy that diffuser: just wrap some aluminum foil around the legs/burner area for pennies. BTW, your disk needs to be cleaned, sanded, and reseasoned; it should never rust like that.

For camping, I prefer a non-stick pan, anyway. Trailrecon uses one all the time. His wife came on a trip and tried to cook on it. She remarked that it took some skill to find the hot spot when the wind shifts. As you said, it is always windy in the desert; I live in Las Vegas. Thanks for the video. My most reliable liquid fuel stove is a Coleman Peak 1 (single burner) from about 1975. The thing just continues to work and work well. I have a Coleman 2 burner liquid fuel stove as well, but it is bulky and has not been used in years....I keep it for nostalgia sake. A few years back I decided to switch to propane and was not happy with most of the ChiCom stoves on the market. Then I found Cook Partner stoves from Partner Steel and have not been disappointed. The CP is a two burner, tuned stove that is easier to use than any other stove I can find and it was made in the USA by an American. The CP stove will be used by my grandkids long after I am gone, the stoves are that durable. Great report on the Scottle. I had been thinking if giving one a try but the cost was too high for a limited use and space hungry system. Thank you for the review....you saved me $325! I did get a Partner Steel Griddle for my Cook Partner Stove, and on reflection, realize it will do everything the Scottle will do and maybe even do it better!!

While you did post some very fair things about the Skottle like the lid is too small and about the way it heats there are a few things it looks like you are not doing to care for it properly. You shouldn't be seeing any rust anywhere on it. It looks like it has not been seasoned and scrubbed or scrubbed with soap. If there is no seasoning that is kept very lightly oiled everything will stick to them. Just prior to cooking depending upon what I'm making I add water or some oil to the Skottle and never just start off with it dry like you did. If you treat the Skottle like a cast iron skillet or Dutch Oven things like eggs or hash browns will slide around and not burn just like the old teflon pans. There is a newer skottle company out there called the Oris Skottle and they seem to take a little different approach that might solve many of the issues that the Tembo Tusk Skottle does not. In the end though I agree they are all way over priced and not necessarily the best tool for the job when room is a factor.

Overlanding-broverlanding. It's off-road camping at best for most folks. The skottle is far too expensive for what it is. To each their own but I've been doing fine with a Coleman two burner and various pots/pans and cast iron. Asian supermarkets have various size woks if you want a skottle-esque type experience.

Cadac skottles are generally made and sold in South Africa. They probably cost more due to the export/import taxes that are charged. This is what is pasted along to customers.

In all fairness, your skottle had no seasoning, and you put the food on cold. I agree it is not for everyone treat it like you would cast iron ( keep it seasoned, don't put the food on cold, and no dish soap. I built my own and bring it every now and again. Propane stove and good pans work better for eggs in my option.
