Watch This Before Rapid Charging Old Milwaukee M18 Batteries!
Today we look at some older Milwaukee batteries and the rumor that if the m18 battery doesn't have a lightning bolt on the top, you can't rapid charge it! Lets see what the test shows and whether we can put this rumor to rest or not. Let us know what you think of the results in the comments section below!

I had a set of the older 2.0 slim battery from about 2010. Look at the bottom where the contacts are. There are two raised ridges on it vs 1 on the 5.0. This ridge prevented the battery from being used with some of the higher demand tools like the salzaw. This is probably the lightning indicates.

One would only expect the old batteries to not charge faster is the quick charge used a different voltage and somehow relied on communication with the battery. Quick Charge 2.0 for a phone, for example, jumps to 9V instead of 5V, so that particular thing only works if the phone battery understands what is being attempted. If using a 2A charger at 5V instead of a 1A charger at 5V, the 2A charges faster even though a phone battery wasn't specifically designed to charge at that particular rate. Just replace phone battery with M18 battery and it's the same thing. If one charger says 3A at 18V and another says 6A at 18V, you can assume the 6A one will charge faster even though batteries were not specifically designed with that charger in mind. The same could be said about any type of battery. I have a AA battery charger that can do 200mA all the way to 1500mA. You can charge a car battery at 50A if you really want to. It's not recommended because it will electrolyze some of the water, but you can do it.

Has anybody else had any problems with the 9.0 not fully charging at first I thought that the led might not be lighting up but they clearly didn't last as long as the ones that were fully charged. Milwaukee said they are unaware of any problem but I now have had a third one go. To Milwaukee credit they warrantied it no questions asked but its getting annoying and making me hesitant to keep stocking up batteries I thought about getting different sizes large batteries (8.0 or 12.0) in the future but just the other day happened to one of my 12.0!! never had a problem with 4.0 or 5.0 and had them much longer. Another great video Vince keep up the great work

That is not surprising since a M18 "charger" is not a charger but a power source. The charge controller is inside the battery. That is how they can balance charge the pack using only five contacts on the battery. For the M12 the "charger" is actually the charger.

Really only have one 5.0 left with silver strip all newer and 9.0s for me. Soon as a deal on 12.0s I'm in.. or new job site at work and I'll get the 6/9in grinder and 2 12.0s.

How about some data and detail. Did you use newer rapid chargers? Those have like double the charge current capacity. Can't charge any battery faster than its charger can chooch. And, would you try it with some proper high capacity batteries? These little ones only have one 18 volt bank of cells inside. They can only take so much charge current, just like how they can only _discharge_ at a limited current. Slap one on a big impact wrench, sawzall or demo hammer and it'll drastically underperform. What would be actually interesting and valuable, is to see how the discrepancy in chsrge time (on 6A fast chargers) if any, scales for higher capacity batteries with multiple 18 volt banks (combined).

The easiest way for you to tell.. have the batteries charged on another charger, use a friend’s or a co-worker’s one to see if there will be a difference? or if just try charging a different battery pack with your charger, Though; I haven’t opened up any of my M18 batteries but I’ve bought a used DeWalt 3.0Ah battery from local flea market, I went a head to fully charge it, (Dewalt only uses 3bar indicator lights) so then, charger shows it’s full, battery only shows 2 bars!! I’ve been sketchy about the charge indicator light board though, I opened up the pack and I figured that the 3rd wire connection was weak, when I put my finger tip on the back of the connection the light comes up.. then I’ve found that the battery was good . Hope that helps Mike
