So, here we are with a comprehensive Q&A session on how to bring or import a drone from Dubai to India without running afoul of customs regulations or resorting to any unlawful means.
1. Why is drone import banned in India?
The ban on drone imports in India was instituted to encourage the growth of the domestic drone industry. Drones serve various purposes, from being recreational toys to mapping terrains and even military applications. By imposing this ban, India aimed to bolster its drone manufacturing capabilities and put pressure on Indian engineers and tech teams to produce drones within the country. It's also worth noting that the ban partly stems from concerns about the Chinese brand DJI.
2. What is banned, and what is not banned?
Importing fully-assembled drones is prohibited, but the import of drone parts is still permitted. The goal is to stimulate the production of drones within India, so importing parts for assembly is considered acceptable.
3. Are people caught while importing drones?
Yes, numerous individuals have been caught while attempting to import drones. There have been notable cases and articles highlighting these incidents.
4. Can I bring a drone?
Yes, you can bring a drone for personal use, but you cannot import it for commercial purposes.
5. Why can't I import a drone?
Importing drones for commercial purposes is prohibited due to the ban on drone imports.
6. Is it really affordable to buy outside India?

8. How did you bring the drone?
I brought the drone during a trip to Dubai. Although I had hoped to fly the drone there, I refrained because I lacked the necessary permissions and licenses. I simply unpacked it and brought it back to India. For a more detailed account, I'll cover this in a later video.
9. Do I need a WPC license?
The WPC license is specifically required for importing drones. If you're not involved in importing, you don't need this license.
10. If I claim a VAT refund for a drone at the Dubai airport, will Indian customs stop me for the drone in India?
No, claiming a VAT refund at the Dubai airport is a beneficial policy aimed at boosting tourism and shopping in Dubai. This information is not linked to your ticket or visa. I've made a detailed video on shopping and VAT refunds, which you can check for more insights.
11. Do I need a DGCI license?
You do not need a DGCI license to purchase a drone. Surprisingly, you don't even need a license to buy a vehicle in India.
12. Where to keep the drone in flight?
During your flight, store the drone's batteries in your cabin bag, while the drone itself can be placed in your check-in luggage. The remote controller, which may have batteries, should also go in your cabin bag.

Hi Need your help. One of my relatives from US came to India on vacation. While returning to US, he left behind his HoverAir X1 selfy camera drone for me as a gift. This drone weight is 125 Gms with battery, max height reach is 15 mts There is no controller with it. It has self flying modes, it flies own its own, shoots videos and photos. It can be controlled using a mobile app in manual mode. Now do I have to register it with DGCA ?, Do I need a flying license for it ? Please guide me on this.

Below 250g drones are safe to buy. The more advanced drones with mapping capabilities are risky.

Vat is already refunded when you buy the drone. Only for gold and some other goods you can claim. You can only claim if you give your passport number when invoice is generated.
