Tough fire to get ahead of. Ballon construction sucks. Looks like they gave it a good try but the fire was advanced

Damn balloon construction is going to be the killer one day !! We had a fire in a 3' crawlspace one afternoon. Workers were welding on the sub pump when they decided to leave it for lunch. It caught fire. Homeowner was trying to put it out with a garden hose when we arrived. We entered the crawlspace, and hit the flames once. Next thing we know, over the radio comes the IC, fire's through the roof ! We got our asses out fast !!

With most of the old balloon construction houses, a fire in a basement or crawl space means there is fire in the attic, and in at least one wall space. Thermal imaging cameras are a big help, IF they are used in a timely manner. (before the place becomes untenable)

Question for firefighters IRL. On what criteria, who and when is it determined that firefighters must evacuate a building on fire (horn being blown from fire trucks)? Thanks!

Not a firefighter here but I can think of two reasons to evacuate: loss of water pressure and high risk of floor or roof collapse.

I'm I the only one that's wondering why the first ladder company parked so short of the building. Maybe the first engine is blocking it?? It looks there was room to get buy. Our SOP is for the first due company to pull past the building, and leave the front open for a ladder company.

    What is balloon construction?

Balloon construction briefly, is where the studs in the walls run continuously up several floors as opposed to stud walls built as a platform on each floor. So now fire can for example travel up from the basement to the attic like a chase in the stud cavities if no fire blocking was installed between all studs at every floor.Back when this house was built probably no fire codes on private dwellings.

Creates perfect chimney type conditions. Heat and smoke rise quickly just like a fireplace chimney draws air and carries heat with it. Fire spreads upward rapidly. No firebreak members.
