Watch the Birdie - Scene from Hellzapoppin' - Martha Raye and the six hits (1941)
Музыка
Famous "Watch the Birdie" from the movie Hellzapoppin from 1941 with Dean Collins dancing with Martha Raye.
This song was also a big success for Gene Krupa's orchestra with Anita O'Day singing.

What swing heaven looks like ...
This was my favorite scene in the movie, particularly because it featured a very young Martha Raye, whom I hardly recognized because I saw her as an older woman in the 1970 Saturday morning TV show "The Bugaloos," in which she played the evil Benita Bizarre who was always trying to foul up the Bugaloos' soft-rock sound with some really vile vibes. Thanks for posting this. Rest in peace, Martha.

Exactly what i was gonna say! Well said mate!👍
Been a professional photographer for 30+s years and heard this for the first time today... LOVE IT!!!
That was downright kooky, but that's appropriate for this oddball movie.
Absolutely Wonderful Musical Number. Martha Raye is simply outstanding.
I love when she is dancing and then spins haphazardly off camera.😃
Watch the birdie, we'll take a camera candid shot Watch the birdie, come on and give it all you've got Watch the birdie, just look around and pick a spot And hold it Watch the birdie, just strike a funny pose a while Watch the birdie or you can beat that pose a mile Watch the birdie and let me see your pretty smile And hold it We're looking for a tall dark handsome man With eyes of blue and the golden tan Strong white teeth like Joel McCray Hey you, get out of the way Watch the birdie, we'll take a camera candid shot Watch the birdie, come on and give it all you've got Watch the birdie, just look around and pick a spot And hold it, hold it Hold it
Martha Raye, really. Didn’t know she could do this. Wasn’t introduced to her until mid 60’s. I wasn’t born until ‘54, so this is interesting to me.

The dress on the dancer at 2:15 is back in style
I first came across Martha Raye, as 'Agatha', in 'McMillan & Wife' (also featuring Nancy Walker, Who I thought looked very much like Martha), but never knew She was a great singer & dancer, some decades before !!! 😀
The great Dean Collins showing his moves.
Bread please..... just an honest and innocent request gets the Hellzapoppin treatment
Great song. Loads of fun too.
We need more boogie woogie water parks!
The camera is surely a Leica III

Yes! I've the DVD of the whole movie and upscaled by a Blu-ray player to 1080p at 60fps on an HDTV, one can see it's a Leica IIIb.
This movie had to have been a collection of early film tricks 😊
First time I saw Martha Raye this film, I thought I was looking at a gross distortion of Judy Garland. Seems like the two actually had some common history!
first to leave comment and say best version and the clarity is great
Dont turn captions on 💀💀
Does anyone know who the group that starts singing with Martha at 1:45 is?

The Six Hits joining Martha here was a swing era singing group and had many manifestations of itself including Six Hits and Miss, featuring six males and one female. The group was formed in Los Angeles in 1936 as a foursome, under the name Three Hits and a Miss, the members being Martha Tilton, Vince Degen, Marvin Bailey and Bill Seckler. I hope that helps! 😉😎

The cook is italian, last phrase sounds "tu sì un'animale. capito?" half dialect...
Take in all the energy and confidence that America represented at the time. And this was in 1941 no less. What were the Japanese thinking?
Sheep from the stooges is here somewhere, but second and third time watching can’t find his cameo.

Shemp isn't in this scene. He plays a film projectionist elsewhere in the movie.

Love the look of the women at that time. Decent and femine...
Interesting how most of these people are dead now.
