Watch snobs are wrong about fashion brands like Vincero

Ғылым және технология

Vincero makes fashion watches, and some watch aficionados have taken a disliking to the brand and many other fashion watch makers too. Are they right to be so aggressive in their hatred?
I don't think so, and in this video I explain why. It includes my thoughts on the Vincero Outrider watch.

    As an adult my first watch was a gift and it was a Vincero. I absolutely loved it until I watched some KZread videos trashing the brand, then was disappointed because obviously they knew better. Well now that I have well over 30 watches in my collection I look back and it is one of my favorites to this day. Because it was a gift and it got me started collecting and it looks awesome. I actually wore to church last Sunday. My wife noticed and it made her heart glad that I was wearing the watch that she bought me. Wear what you like.

    Watch snobs don’t like Vincero not because they look bad or are bad quality, but because of their unreasonable price for a normal quartz watch and the misleading and aggressive marketing tactics. And this is coming from a professional marketing analyst

    thats the point! all these Fashion watches would be not that bad, if they are priced fair and their marketing is not missleading. Take a look at Nixon watches. The watches are basicly the same like all other fashion brands, but mostly half the price, no agressive and direct lyings (destrupting the industry, luxury watches for a fair price, cuting out the middleman, the usual nonsens) and fair pricing - nothing wrong with that. or Swatch or Timex - same deal: Fashion forward and they are totaly ok.

    I generally agree with you, but for me the problem is the price and the value for money. I was gifted a Hugo Boss which cost around €300. Very big, very flashy, very fashionable. The chronograph seconds index does not align correctly on 12 when stopped, the crown is flimsy and the strap wore off after literally four times I wore it. And it cost €300 to my best man! Every watch has its place, provided that it costs as it should.

    Fashion brand watches absolutely do have a purpose in a person´s watch journey. Are they investments? No. Are you getting ripped off when you buy a fashion brand watch? Absolutely. Can you get better watches on sites like Aliexpress for 1/10th of the price? Definitely. But speaking as someone who got into the world of watches more than a year ago, I can say that cheaply made watches like these were the reason I got into watch collecting and I appreciate them for making me interested in the hobby and opening my eyes to other, more prestigious brands. However, something I really despise of these brands is that they often falsely advertise their product and sometimes straight-up lie to their customers. I understand that some people just want a good-looking watch on their wrist and don't care what the specifications are, but these companies take advantage of people like this. Vincero is not as bad as other brands, but they still do it nonetheless. Wear what you want, but please be informed by the other options that are out there. Don't buy a $200 MVMT when you can get an exact copy on Aliexpress for €10.

    RE: Watches on AliExpress -- This comment is disingenuous, and repeats a mantra I come across often: "$200 MVMT watch for $10 on AliExpress". The economics don't actually make sense, and I know this because I've deal with suppliers in my e-commerce business. MVMT and Vincero certainly have high margins - likely around 85% before taxes, imports, shipping, etc all come into the picture, but $10 watch for $200? Please stop this nonsense. The COGS of this $230'ish Outrider watch by Vincero is more likely in the ballpark of $37 per unit, before all the additional costs come into the picture. Ex: packaging($2-3), import duties/taxes(10%), shipping costs(varies by region/country), etc. Vincero is likely operating a 25% net margin business when all things are said and done, factoring all costs.

    @@elderfresh5510 I agree that the "$200 MVMT watch for $10 on AliExpress" comments don't always add up, but in some cases, they absolutely do. When doing the math, as you did on this watch, which certainly looks perfectly reasonable, you kinda fail to address the elephant in the room. This is probably a watch, that when all is said and done, and with the additional fees and costs that you mention, is a $55 watch. Add a profit of 25%, and Vincero COULD deliver this watch to you, at around $70-80.! And therein lies "devil". When buying a watch, from a brand like Vincero, MVMT, DW - the BIGGEST part of the cost, is MARKETING. Essentially you pay $130 in marketing for THIS watch.! Usually a company of this size, would spend around 1-5% of revenue on marketing. These brands spend around 40%-50%.!! That's insane! That's the issue. That's the complaint. You don't pay for a product. You pay for marketing.

  • @elderfresh5510

    @elderfresh5510

    @@nsrensen8700 I appreciate your response with my post. You are right that a lot of money does go to marketing, but if they want to be a sizeable online brand (which is their intention), it takes considerable marketing dollars to do it. So yes, you are 100% paying a lot towards their marketing costs, but there's no other way around it. If Vincero could reach 8-figure scale without having to invest so much marketing dollars, they would do it. This is the reality of the digital marketing landscape. Traffic costs money. However, 1-5% revenue on marketing is demonstrably false, unless you wish to play the niche watch game, like the micro brands do. Any of the "micro brands" that watch enthusiasts really like (ex: Monta, Formex, Zelos), don't have to rely on expensive marketing budgets because KZread creators do the marketing work for them. They are catering to a niche audience. They are as well, capped in terms of growth strategy as a result.

    Vincero watches are hated because of their misleading and dishonest marketing and their outrageous pricing. Something of note here. Vincero buy all their watches from chinese wholesalers like ali express and then resell them. The big issue comes from their marketing, trying to sell these as "luxury watches". Which is something that they absolutely are not. Also the fact that they're supposedly cutting out the middlemen, while they are themselves a middleman and mark up the watch 4-5 fold, while you yourself can buy them directly from china if you so wanted to.

    Great but flawed message. I feel people grow irate over these brands, because they have no modicum of respect for their customers. All presentation, no delivery. A ten dollar watch being sold as direct to consumer luxury brand. My first watch was a Tissot I bought on the grey market, and I paid $30 more than this watch is advertised. For $220 dollars, I got a respected brand, an automatic movement, and a sapphire crystal. This watch is cheap, ugly, and you lose the respect of others who know better, not because you’re looking for a inexpensive watch, but because you got swindled by a flashy social media marketing campaign. A two minute Google search would have warned you off Vincero, but you just couldn’t be bothered.

    To me, "affordable" luxury watches suck because of the way they advertise it. A lot of false claims in their ads and their own description page for their watches. You can obviously tell that they say one thing, but do another. The descriptions are worded in such a way to try to fool you as well. If it's just a simple "oh we created this watch to look great" then okay, fine, it's a pure aesthetics piece. However, what they actually say is that they are COMPARABLE to Rolex, Omega, Tissot, AP and the likes BUT they've discovered the secret sauce, which is "cutting out the middle man" to provide you with similar quality at a fraction of the cost. THAT. IS. THE. BULLSHIT. If their marketing is honest and matches their products then it's all good. Watch enthusiasts don't have a problem with affordable watches. I have a few watches under $100 that are great and I wear them quite often. These "affordable" luxury watches are actually not even affordable, given some are in the $200+ price range and use cheap mineral glass, shitty quartz movement, very cheap and hard leather band, horrible finishes and quality control, the list goes on. This is the main problem with these fashion watches. There are many videos on KZread that also goes into comparing identical clones off of AliExpress that costs about 4-5x less, yet are somehow superior in build quality and use of materials. So then the question becomes WHAT are you paying for? These watches have counterparts on a Chinese marketplace that are cheaper. So that alone already destroys the claim of most of these affordable watches. You must be paying for the brand then, but then no one really cares or even know Movement, Vincero, Valuchi etc. lol.

They target young audience with little to no idea of what they get for their hugely overpriced watches. The concept that fashion/smart (and scammer Vincero etc.) watches are some necessary feeder watch into the bigger watch world is a crock. Most people will buy a cheaper watch first, but this does not have to be a fashion watch. More usually a Casio or other non fashion brand. The distinction between fashion and non fashion watches is purely that fashion watches are trying to con you to differing degrees. Buy whatever you want though. We all make mistakes. Smart watches (like smart phones) are not cheap and not really watches. This may sound ‘snobby’ to you, but it’s actually the complete opposite. People with smart watches are the ones who think they are superior to everyone else, but they are just sad sheep who were not into watches (or phones at that point in history) or technology, that copied everyone else for instant ‘oh look at me, aren’t I fantastic’ status. If you pay for things with your watch, the salesperson/cashier is thinking 🙄💭🐔

    Vincero actually price their watches fairly for the specs and particularly their movement choices, but the problem with the bigger market for social media driven "fashion" watches is that they are taking very cheap watches of the likes of alibaba and are using youtube to slap on ridiculous margins on them. It is very exploitative of consumers. Also agree on the snobiness of the so called critics online. its pure snobbery, they hold up a puritanism about mechanical watches without really understanding it and will promote a dodgy unreliable watch over a high quality quartz just because its mechanical.
