Watch: Sherpa carries Everest climber in ‘death zone’ rescue

A Nepali Sherpa rescued a Malaysian climber found clinging to a rope below Mount Everest's summit. It's an area known as the "death zone," where successful rescues are very rare.

@@bfat387 you are so wrong about this. The unfortunate truth was, the Malaysian climber, Ravi, initially didn't even mention Gelje Sherpa's name in his appreciation essay that read more like an advertisement for 14 Peaks, the climbing company he was with. After he received massive backlash on social media for being ungrateful, only did he mention Gelje's name in brackets, alluding that Gelje is part of his climbing partner company (14 Peaks) when in reality Delje is from another company called AGA Adventures. I mean 14 Peaks did orchestrate the 2nd half of the rescue by helicoptering him from Camp 4 to a nearby hospital. However, this 2nd half of the rescue would not be needed if nobody was going to piggy back him down from The Balcony in the Death Zone, over 6 freaking hours. He would have ended up being a frozen landmark up there. And no helicopters can go higher than Camp 4 without crashing, because the air is simply too thin for any choppers to generate enough lift to remain airborne. It's appalling he kept promoting 14 Peaks who abandoned him on the Death Zone, while continued to diminish Gelje's (from AGA Adventures) rescue efforts. If I'll climb Everest, I know I will book AGA Adventures and not 14 Peaks.

There's controversy in the climbing community because the man he rescued blocked Gelje Sherpa on all social media and went on a media tour without crediting him for saving his life. I just don’t understand why people keep risking their life’s for 2 minutes of “accomplishment”. Props to That Chinese client too…that’s money and might’ve lost his chance at ascending again. Wow!! So many Sherpas have lost their lives trying to rescue climbers, that guy is truly a hero and deserves all the praise. ❤

I agree. It's total madness. I don't mind taking a risk but if the death risk of doing it is high then I'd choose low low risk like knitting everytime!!!!. Much respect and ❤ to the sherpas..the real heros😊.

According to Chinese media and Chinese mountain climbers, they have quit climbing even though having reached 8400m, which is very close to their final target 8848m, because they found a climber in bad situation which was abandoned by other Nepali sherpas. They ordered the sherpas which they employed to rescue the person in serious condition and also promised to pay the Nepali sherpas 10 thousand US dollars. So in the end, the Malaysian climber was saved. The western media gave all the credits to the Nepali sherpas and didn’t even mention the Chinese climbers and their efforts at all.

According to various news outlets, the Sherpa persuaded his Chinese client to save the Malaysian climber, which is also what NBC is reporting. It was mentioned that the Chinese climber gave up his summit attempt. So you are saying he not only gave up his attempt but also paid an extra $10k?

According to The Republic of Wadiya national news, Admiral General Aladeen was the one who rescued the climber disguised as a Sherpa. He also paid the Chinese climber with some gold bars to ask him to stop his quest. He also invited them to climb mount Aladeen which is twice as tall as Everest. By the way, the helicopter was from the Royal Wadiya Air Force.
