He is Stp is right...they have a sound that is all there own..to me they have by far the strongest Catalog of all the 90s bands...the sheer number of excellent well crafted songs approaches the great bands of the 60s and 70s

Love this guy, and his Brother....and Eric Kretz. With new singer they´re doing the same beautiful, amazing and hard rock. With Melodies SO Weilland, that the only explanation is the De Leo ARE STP...

The De Leo bloodline is amazing. Him and his brother are on awesome musicians. They are both just wonderful. I do wish that they would just jam out and record what comes flowing.

I’ve been a guitarist for 25 years and I picked up a bass last week to learn how to play. I’ve revisited STP songs and man all the bass parts are badass! I feel like such a jerk for just paying attention to the guitar. I’m actually blown away to learn that he also made some of the biggest stp hits on guitar.

We all have our instruments! I was a rhythm guitar player, mostly, with some leads and solos, but I self taught bass and it’s been my favorite and most efficient instrument.

Damn, Robert seems like the most genuine cat out there!! So glad I came across this!!! Hope I get the chance to meet him and thank him in person one day.

Enough can't be said of this man's musical genius. As an instrumentalist, songwriter, master of gear... so much admiration.

I love how he plays whole song, melodic bass like John Entwistle.

Love the part at 12:00 where his car’s turn signal inspired the Vasoline riff and he starts playing it and smiles at the laughing audience like “right?! See what I did there?” This was so awesome to watch to learn not just about his process, but also where he drew inspiration from. The guy clearly is a student and lover of all kinds of music, and has never been afraid to think outside the box to craft his parts. Also seems like just a nice, humble dude.

Robert is one of my fave bass player. Such unusual bass lines filling rock songs like STP did. Hats off for this guy 👌👍👌👍

such an incredibly underrated bassist, songwriter, vocalist and musician in general - I always loved his backup vocals to Scott and he absolutely crushes basslines like Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart. I just always loved his feel and dynamics

Huge STP fan. The Core album was literally the soundtrack of my youth. Always loved Robert’s playing style and as a musician myself I can say he is one of the best. His bass lines and the way sits in the pocket was unlike anything I’ve ever heard. And I just learned from this video after all these years that he wrote Plush, Interstate Love Song, Vasoline, etc. on the acoustic guitar. Wow! I’m just blown away. Awesome video. There was always something amazing about STP's music and sound - something distinctly West Coast USA, but you could also tell it was steeped in the history of American music: jazz, blues, Motown, country, rock and roll. It wasn't easy to spot, with that delicious hard-edged production - I'd be listening to a song and go, "wow, where did *that* come from?" It makes so much sense to hear Robert talking about his musical past and influences and how that translated into the songwriting process. Very, very cool.

Back in the 90s while everyone was listening to Pearl Jam , aic and soundgarden. I always leaned on STP , as a musician it spoke to me the most. AIC was awesome too but STP got me musically more excited. Now years later seeing how he arranged these songs it makes perfect sense it would appeal to musicians.

Great musician, not only a great bass player, he knows the music he want to express, and what he want to achieve with his sound.

He is the complete opposite of what one might think he would be based off of his look in videos etc. Seems like a genuine nice guy that created some of the best riffs of the 90's

the DeLeo brothers were the best musicians from the 90s...insanely creative approach to song writing.

STP is my favourite band for kickass basslines. Robert is awesome 😀

One of the main things I zone in on with STP are nearly always the bass lines.

I love how just his tone is an example of, some of the greatest recorded tones are not pretty on their own. When I was younger and for a lot of years I thought fret buzz = the enemy. Some of the best sounding bass lines out there are recorded with fret buzz and other noise. Just play the damn thing. That's what matters. That's a hard lesson to learn.

Yea the bass is a messy instrument. All of the great songs back in the day had the drums, guitars and vocals recorded with beautiful sound quality but the isolated bass tracks always sound terrible, some notes sounding off tempo but obviously they fit the tunes perfectly. Strange how that works

it's true. a lot of the best sounding parts ever in recorded history are quite "messy" (as a diehard Ween fan I'm tempted to say "brown"). Jimmy Page is a good example.

I played bass exclusively for most of my life, and played only by ear. Three years ago, I decided to learn some guitar. My bass playing and my ear has improved so much since! I still consider myself a bass player first, and a somewhat beginner rhythm guitarist, but warming up and tinkering on the guitar brings new life to my bass riffing for sure. Maybe we should all learn a little bit of basic playing on another instrument.

agreed. im a guitar player, but picking up a bass has made me pay a lot more attention to rhythm. gives you a different perspective when you play another instrument

I agree 100%- I have always played guitar and recently bought a bass. SO much fun to play! It has improved my guitar playing in many ways.

Wise words! In my band I'm the bass player but I can also play the Guitar. The Guitar player Is also a bass player. We understand each other very well and It's easier and funnier to play together.

Amazing video, I´ve always though he was a very underrated bass player and composer and this confirms that

Saw STP back in 2010 in my very small town. Glad I was straight edge so I could recall all the details of the show. Scott was actually on point and really enjoying how the crowd knew all the words. I crowd surfed for the first time during Interstate Love Song. That was around the time I thought about getting into bass. I remember Robert just rockin out. Really made an impression on me. I love Les Claypool and Ryan Martini but Robert to me is a true songwriter. He definitely understands the Miles Davis idea of being technical but not just shoving unnecessary notes all over. Wonderful person and I hope more musicians come around to appreciate him. My older gen X brothers were so fucking jealous.

My love for STP simply cannot be measured. Robert makes all other rock bassists’ playing feel like they are missing so much, I can hardly listen to anyone else. Nicest guy on the planet, as well.

One of the best ever; underrated.

One of my all-time favourite concerts and impressions ever, was STP's in Auckland after Scott rejoined. I loved some STP songs but didn't really know the band members apart from Scott. Up on stage was this tall unreal, cool dude with dark sunnies and dressed with style just laying back and grooving on bass. He was the epitome of rock cool. Like unbelievable! Little did I know how awesome and personable he was too. What an awesome guy!! Annoyingly we saw Dean at the hotel bar after the concert walk through the lobby / bar, we very shyly said Gidday to him and he said hi back but looked shattered, I think had been sick. He kind of hovered expecting us to say more but being shy kiwi's and with him looking so exhausted we kind of didn't want to hassle him. It was just awkward and I wish we had the courage to say thank you to him and how awesome the show was. Loved the video, thanks.

wow , I always heard those clever chords , I was born in south America, and let me tell you , i play too whatever, love music and all that, growing up with that cultural influence then moving to the states (cali) was cool because those roots I acquire growing up down south showed in my playing and it helped me stand out because I naturally played differently and blended with heaviesh rock sort of music make kids wow, anyways the point is even though I wasn't a huge stp fan back then I always thought of Dean and Leon while playing but not because I like stp or them, I never knew the connection and quite frankly it was something I couldn't figure it out. , wow , years later now 38 this all goes full circle. I have been listening to stp for the past four days straight, watching their live shows, listening to their studio recordings, watching their interviews and I feel so much nostalgia is crazy because their music cuts deep and well after a long time of feeling like I am loosing my song writing skills I found myself again ,I found that place within , stp has opened my creativity again and I cannot stop coming up with ideas so for that I thank this band for truly inspiring me from the inside out, reminding of who I am , never ever experienced this before.

The John Paul Jones of 90s rock!

Never knew the Deleo brothers were from jersey. Must have been a great time in point pleasant. Friends and I would go to seaside to party over the weekend. Miss walking down the boardwalk with a nice buzz at 1am with no worries at all. Also growing up in jersey listening to K rock as a kid. Interstate love song was really a song that gave such a unique feeling to my young mind, and still feel it to this day. It was like sliding down a water slide with wd40. So smooth and sonically awesome. Also from the other videos it seems like Eric and the two brothers remained grounded pretty well. I’m sure they still Partied but from my perspective they stayed very disciplined and humble. Unfortunately Scott did not. And for the most part he didn’t need to. The Prob with drugs is they help in the beginning but with consistent use and time it always takes a destructive turn. Spoken from experience. Drugs will always win. These guys avoided that thankfully

if you understand music, jazz, theory, etc you give it up for the Deleos. They aren't some "lunkhead" rock musicians, they really write some interesting progressions and sonorities. Blending lots of different styles. An STP record will go from "butt rock" to bossa nova to psychadelia

STP was the main CD in my car back in the 90s , they always got more play than AIC, soundgarden , pearl jam and Pumpkins. I mean what a time to be alive when all those were new albums. STP always was my fav with AIC a close second. Siamese Dream was a masterpiece though. So many great songs. STP always spoke to me as a musician myself. It seemed a level above musically than the other grunge era bands.
